his so called development
where only tall buildings are
made for a select few builders
and sold to the elite or rich is mak-
ing our motherland lose its natural
resources in the from of Birds, Wild
animals, Rivers, green cover and
most importantly our mangroves also
known locally as Tiwar / Kandel.
We are all aware that the spar-
row is an international bird travelled
to our lands with the help of boats in
the past. Bulbuls are indigenous, and
one hardly hears their sweet sounds
of chirping on the gooseberry trees.
In the migrant illegal Nirvana Soci-
ety in Mahim, they illegally cut trees
of the indigenous people living there
through treachery and using the po-
lice. They even cut the Umbhar tree
that is sacred. The Bulbuls would nest
in the gooseberry trees on the indig-
enous peoples land. The sounds were
so refreshing and kept the indigenous
connected to nature beautifully, but
this Migrant illegal society poisoned
and cut the trees which was the natural
habitat of the Red Crest Bulbul. The
complaint is with the BMC wonder if
they will ever do anything about it,
one of the indigenous residents told
us. This destructive nature of migrants
who are out to destroy our natural hab-
itat for their shallow comforts must
stop immediately through our own
efforts and strong collective action.
A number of sparrows is on
the decline, and we know this because
that distinctive and consistent chirp
that was audible years ago has slowly
lessened, if not disappeared. It was
World Sparrow Day March 20. This
day was kept aside to conserve the
Sparrow population.
Our leopards have been killed
by these same migrants who have cut
our forests and have built illegal hous-
ing societies on forest land. The corrupt
courts have also legalized those colo-
nies. Our wild animals have no where
to go but after these same migrants,
hence we hear of leopard attacks etc.
Instead of stopping cutting forests and
building housing settlements for mi-
grants, the administration continues
to use violent criminal means to stop
activists who are indigenous and who
are fghting for our motherland. This
administration must be dissolved with
immediate effect and the Indigenous
must take charge of conserving their
natural habitat. The indigenous leop-
ard is the most amazing hunter in the
world, but is reduced to dogs chasing
them away from their own mother-
land. This is the same plight of the In-
digenous people - they are being driv-
en out by people of lesser quality who
wear migrant religious symbols as a
show of authority. When we say Mi-
grant we mean all those who are not
indigenous to the seven islands. Those
from beyond the Ghats and from other
states. They will live here and destroy
our natural habitat and once the en-
vironment is destroyed they will go
back to their hometowns and live and
probably destroy that area too, judg-
ing by their nature. Our trees are ours
and whether to cut or remove or re-
plant them is not the authority of the
courts or the Migrants decisions, but a
collective decisions of the indigenous
peoples. We all must stand together to
protect our wild life and Trees.
The Indigenous must protect our natural habitat and all wildlife therein,
Migrant Government and encroaching migrants cannot be trusted.

38 + acres of mangroves at
Charkop, Kandivli (West), ad-
joining the Manori Creek, are
under threat. For the past two months,
reclamation, encroachments and bon-
fres near sector 8 of Charkop village
are slowly eating into the rich reserve
of mangroves.Incidents of unidentifed
men starting fres near the mangroves
have increased. Encroachments usu-
ally come up late in the night or on a
holiday when it is diffcult to get hold
of the offender, said Mili Shetty, a
resident of Sai Siddhi building whose
home faces the mangroves. Last Fri-
day, I saw the mangroves on fre and
informed the fre brigade. In fact, on
February 21, the Charkop police fled
a frst information report (FIR) against
Karthik Shetty, a garage owner in the
area. According to the police, Shetty
had built an eatery stall and erected
a shed made of asbestos sheets 50
metres from the mangroves.
The CRZ-I rule bans any de-
velopment within 100 metres of eco-
logically sensitive areas such as man-
groves, marine parks, and national
parks. We booked Shetty under En-
vironment Protection Act, 1986. He
is yet to be arrested, said Vasant De-
varkar, senior inspector, Charkop po-
lice station. The Police themselves are
involved in this criminal activity of
destroying mangroves, hence no ac-
tion has been taken against the culprits.
The high court order earlier
this week [March, 2014] calling for a
total ban on construction on wetlands
is a victory for the environmentalists
who fought the case and a testimony to
the courts sensitivity towards the en-
vironment, the green crusaders pointed
out that it is also a damning indictment
of the governments failure to protect
Mumbais vanishing wetlands. Accord-
ing to environmentalists, the police and
local authorities have also failed to pro-
tect those who have risked life and limb
to fght for Mumbais wetlands.
If the government machinery had
worked towards protecting wetlands,
environmentalists say there would have
been no need for them to petition the
court. Instead, departments in charge
of wetland conservation have turned a
blind eye to rampant construction and
the police have routinely sided with
builders instead of conservationists.
Mr. Rossi Dsouza and Mr.
Royston Gudinho, Indigenous from Go-
rai who also work with MGP [Mobai
Gaothan Panchayat], have taken up
the issue of Mangroves very seriously.
Recently they saved acres of Mangroves
that were denied sea water by crimi-
nals blocking the path of the sea water
heading to the mangroves. On seeing
this crime, the dynamic duo quickly
took matters into their own hands and
removed the obstacles put there by the
builder and cleared the path for the sea
water to reach the thirsty mangroves.
The Mangroves in Gorai were saved
by the proactive efforts of Mr. Rossi
and Mr. Royston. They are also going
to get the other local citizens involved
in this activity of protecting Mangroves
all over Gorai, Uttan, Dharavi etc. We
need to preserve our Main source of
Oxygen said Royston confdently.
The residents of Dharavi too
are coming together on this issue to
save the precious Mangrove tree.

Only Dr. Ambedkars iconography stands the test of time.
I
n Hyderabad, there is a small
shrine to the Fathers of the Na-
tion. Inside a shallow cupola
was a sculpture of Jawaharlal Nehru
and Mahatma Gandhi, based upon
a famous photograph of both men
from the 1940s. In that photo Nehru
was sitting close to Gandhi and both
men were smiling at each other. If
one looks closer one would fnd that
someone had taken a hammer and
chisel to the piece and removed the
prominent Kashmiri nose of Pandit
Nehru, rendering his handsome face to
that of a leper. Gandhijis mouth was
smeared with faeces / Human Shit.
In the 1960s and 70s. Stat-
ues of these men were everywhere to
be seen, often with garlands of fresh
gladiolas around their necks. This
version of the Fathers of Independent
India would have been unimaginable
a few decades ago. Not everyone
agreed with Nehrus politics or Gan-
dhis philosophy, but no one openly
disrespected them for what they had
done to achieve freedom. The de-
faced statutes in Hyderabad were not
unique. In Chennai, a mural depicting
some of the great heroes of Indepen-
dence included an image of K Kam-
raj, the Gandhi of the South. Like
Gandhi, he was a social reformer, a
politician and a bania. And like the
Mahatma he invoked humanitarian
ideas as a way to fght untouchability.
In the mural, Kamrajs mouth is also
stained with shit. A defaced poster of
Kamraj, Nehru and Gandhi, Chennai.
Dr. Ambedkar never ceased
sparring with Gandhi and his pater-
nalistic approach to Dalit liberation.
In every painting, sculpture, paint-
ing or poster of Babasaheb weve
noticed the glasses are emphasised.
As if the artists were reassuring all
those around that the great man was
keeping an eye on his people. And
warning all those who would per-
petuate atrocities against them. At
every chowk, in every gali, and along
every main road in India, his amaz-
ing spectacles bear witness and keep
vigil. Babasaheb, it seems to me, has
replaced Bapuji as the Father of India.
His face, full of protection and hope,
has superseded the once laughing, but
now night-soiled face of Mahatma.
When one compares the lega-
cies of the two men, Ambedkars is
arguably the more robust of the two.
Gandhis great achievement of Inde-
pendence is now taken for granted.
Ambedkars vision, sharp-
ened through his wonderful spherical
rims, of Tribals, Dalits, OBCs doing
it for themselves, of breaking loose
of the mainstream political parties, of
dictating their own terms, of electing
their own leaders, not those chosen
for them by non-Dalits, of choosing
their own religion and not putting up
with being pushed out of Hindu tem-
ples, is a vibrant and growing reality
in modern India. Love them or loathe
them, Kanshi Ram and Mayawati,
have done more to change the face of
Indian politics than the hacks of the
Congress or Bharatiya Janata Party.

P
ani adle; gao nadle is a well-
known Marathi saying which
aptly applies to the village of
Uttan. The village was abandoned by
quite a few residents due to the lack
of ground- water. Till recently they
left the village and settled down in the
city and suburbs of Bombay for bet-
ter prospects. No water was visible
in the ground; but the villagers made
it amply visible in their character.
Therefore in the colloquial language
they say gavat nai pani pun navat hai
pani. The village lacked water but
the villagers revealed through their
grit and determination that they were
second to none. In the fnal analysis,
they proved to be better in character
and achievements than the others.
On the same lines, there was
another village named Chikli in the
township of Ratnagiri. The villagers
of that village too had left the village
and had taken shelter in Pune and
Mumbai. They too, by their frm deter-
mination, revealed their true character
of patriotism and social commitment.
Two well-built characters from Uttan
and Chikli, later came to be known as
Kaka Baptista and Keshav Gangadhar
Tilak respec-
tively, met on
the banks of the
river Thames
while they stud-
ied in London.
It is this coming
together that en-
riched them as
well as the the
Kokan Coast.
Both came to
Cambridge be-
cause they not
only wanted to
master the lan-
guage but they wanted to know what
it was in this country that was master-
ing the whole world to such an extent
that their empire came to be known a
dominion on which the sun never sets.
They wanted to know how
come such a tiny nation could control
a major portion of the world and they
wanted to imbibe the spirit that was
controlling all the educational systems
of the world. While they were there
they came to know that this empire was
not homogenous but heterogeneous.

T
he Tone of the whole rally was
simply - RESIST Injustices !
Right from Fr. Fraiser Mascharen-
has to all the speakers, there was a
thundering outcry for fghting against
corruption in the Government and in
the whole system. The language of
choice was Mobaims indigenous lan-
guage which is Kokni or East Indian
and English with a few speakers from
Vasai, not well versed with the indig-
enous language chose to speak in Sar-
varkari - Brahminical Marathi. They
havent yet broken off from their Hin-
du Peshawar lal/kali topi yoke. Ms.
Dominica Dabre from Vasai spoke in
Marathi and she was fery, the rest of
the speakers who were non-indigenous
offered the indigenous people present
of full support in their fght against
unjust land acquisition by the BMC
and the government both of whom
are mere puppets of the Builder lobby.
Why cant the Congress, BJP,
SS, SP, MNS etc. develop their own
home states and house the migrant
populations there? Why do they have
to take the indigenous lands for their
vested interests while our people bare-
ly have a roof over their heads. To even
repair indigenous houses we have to
beg the migrants from over the ghats
who rule us, for repair permissions.
Our people dont have jobs and cannot
sustain or provide for their families.
Nicholas Almeida, In-
digenous / East Indian from Sa-
har village Andheri east, was the
most fery in his speech, giving the
BMC a ftting response through the
blaring loud speakers that could
be heard right up to VT station.
He reminded the audience of Kaka
Baptistas contribution to the nation.
Yet they neglect the indigenous of the
land. His closing statement was we
are not going to sit quietly, picture
abhi baki hai.
