THE EARTH CLIMATE CHANGE COMMUNITY SUMMIT

Have a conversation about climate change with a Russian diplomat, a labor activist in Zambia, an
energy expert from Denver, and a Nobel Peace Prize Winner in Connecticut – physically and
electronically at UT on Sat., Oct. 11.
The Earth Charter Climate Change Community Summit, coordinated by Earth Charter U.S., will highlight
sustainability initiatives in business, education and government from more than 25 locations, including Portland,
Ore., Honolulu, Hawaii, New York, N.Y., Senegal, Africa, Temagami, Canada, Okinawa, Japan, Hamburg,
Germany and Bournemouth, UK.

The University community is invited to the day-long summit, which will be held in Falk Theatre and the Vaughn
Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration begins at Falk Theatre at 10 a.m.
In 2001, UT helped launch Earth Charter U.S., which was striving to create a national movement focusing on
sustainability. Its initiatives were broadcast via satellite from UT to 12 U.S. cities. Today Earth Charter U.S. is a

Our luncheon at the Columbia Restaurant was a
wonderful success. Dr.Roach gave an
informative talk on the International Criminal
Court followed by an engaging question and
answer discussion. Thank you to Dr.
Mark Amen and fellow board members for your
help in putting together this event. I look forward
to seeing you all at our United Nations Day
Celebration on Friday evening, October 24th
This event will be at the University of South
Florida, College of Education, TECO room.
Board members will be providing a
smorgesboard of food from around the world.
The theme for UN Day is Sustainability,
Millenium goal 7: Environmental Sustainability as
an Essential Tool for Poverty Alleviation. This is
an issue that has profound implications on
environmental, health, and economic conditions
in countries and regions across the globe.

The anniversary of the entry into force of the
United Nations Charter on 24 October 1945 has
been celebrated as United Nations Day since
1948. It has traditionally been marked
throughout the world by meetings, discussions
and exhibits on the achievements and goals of
the Organization. In 1971, the General
Assembly recommended that Member States
observe it as a public holiday.

The all-day event at UT will feature
videoconferences, workshops and lectures.
Highlights include:
· Alexander Likhotal, president and
CEO of Green Cross International
and advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev, will
speak at UT at 11:05 a.m.
· Lunch and “Webcast Global Round-
Robin,” in which each city will give a
two-minute presentation on its
commitment to addressing climate
change, will run from 12:45 to 1:45
p.m.
· From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. children can
participate in Earth Scouts, a scouting
program for boys and girls ages 3-13.
The festival features children’s hands-
on activities in human rights, respect
for nature, economic justice and a
culture of peace. For more

and beverages, will be held at 4:15 p.m.

THE BETTER WORLD
CAMPAIGN
Government Affairs & Advocacy
The Better World Campaign and our sister
organization, the United Nations Foundation,
are working together on an ad for Tuesday‘s
New York Times. With all eyes on New York
next week during the General Assembly, this
is a unique opportunity to help encourage a
renewed U.S. leadership role at the UN and to
foster international cooperation in support of a
better, safer world.
2008 Elections Outreach
The Better World Campaign is engaged in a
nonpartisan 2008 election initiative helping to
build political and public support for
international cooperation and the United
Nations by educating U.S. citizens, their
elected officials, and Republican and
Democratic Presidential candidates.
BWC’s 2008 election outreach efforts promote
candidate and voter understanding of the
need to work cooperatively to solve the
world’s most pressing challenges and to
rebuild America’s reputation in the world. We
on the value of international cooperation and
partnership with the United Nations. We are
also hosting an online platform, On Day One
(www.OnDayOne.org), for interactive
participation and discussion of America’s role
in the world and what the next president can
do “on day one” of his or her term to advance
international cooperation.
Through these two projects and in partnership
with other NGO’s, BWC is reaching out to
presidential and congressional candidates and
offering background information and expertise
on global challenges and the role of the
United Nations in meeting them.

Pius Nyamora fled Kenya in 1994 after six years of
threats from President Daniel Moi's authoritarian 7:00 PM
government. His crime was to publish the truth about
the repressive policies of the government. President

Moi had instilled so much fear among Kenyans that
many persecuted individuals were too scared to
speak. In his presentation, Nyamora shares the

stories of those who had the courage to speak and Holiday Party
could not be heard because of self-censorship within
the news media. He will reflect on those frightening

years in Kenya, and what Kenyans went through and
how they fought back to be free. Their struggles may
and presents the lessons to who are supportive of
dictatorships. Nyamora’s story might also help
Americans to realize how blessed they are to be free,
and why they should defend that freedom and help
others to achieve it.
Pius Nyamora is an internationally recognized
journalist from Kenya and is an Adjunct Faculty
Instructor at the University of Tampa in the
Communications Department.

EMERGENCE OF ISLAMIC
SINGLE CURRRENCY

Finance chiefs of five of the six-member, oil-
rich Gulf Cooperation Council approved a
proposal to create a monetary union as a
move toward adopting a single currency,
according to the AFP.
The six Islamic states constituting the Gulf
Cooperation Council are Bahrain, Kuwait,
Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United
Arab Emirates. Oman pulled out of the
agreement last year.
Five states in the compact have agreed to set
2010 as the target date for the creation of a
monetary union and the adoption of common
currency.
The emergence of an Islamic single currency
among these oil-rich Middle Eastern countries
marks a significant step in the emerging
worldwide movement to abandon national
currencies in favor of regional currencies,
along the model where the EU states have
abandoned their national currencies in favor of
the European Central Bank and the euro.
In 2002, the finance ministers of the Gulf
Cooperation Council states sought out the
assistance of the European Central Bank, as
the model for their single currency, according
to BBC reports.
The council was created in 1981 to promote
the development of the member countries.
The monetary union will entail the creation of a
central bank to issue the single currency.
Tthe finance and economy ministers reviewed
the European Union's response to the
council's view on eliminating obstacles that
have blocked a long-stalled free trade
agreement with the EU.
Progress was also made on key convergence
factors required to underpin the common
deficit and public debt to the gross domestic
product, target interest rates and reserve
requirements. Progress yet remains in reaching
a consensus on inflation, the last remaining
stumbling block to creating the common
currency.
International Monetary Fund Chief Dominique
Strauss-Kahn, who met with the Gulf
Cooperation Council finance ministers in
Jeddah, hailed the move by the Gulf states
toward economic integration, though he
continued to express doubts the single currency
would be adopted within two years.
"Achieving monetary union by
2010 will be a major challenge, as much
remains to be done to enable the creation of a
single currency within two years," Straus-Kahn.
"Overcoming the current inflationary pressures,
developing a clear vision of the powers of the
future common central bank, choosing an
exchange regime of the common currency, and
harmonizing financial regulations and structures
will be critical in this process."
One factor easing the transition toward a single
currency is that the six Gulf Cooperation
Council member states all currently peg their
currencies to the U.S. dollar.

CHINA PAPER URGES NEW
CURRENCY ORDER AFTER
“FINANCIAL TSUNAMI”
Threatened by a "financial tsunami," the world
must consider building a financial order no
longer dependent on the United States, a
leading Chinese state newspaper said on
Wednesday.
The commentary in the overseas edition of the
People's Daily said the collapse of Lehman
Brothers Holdings Inc "may augur an even
larger impending global 'financial tsunami'."
The People's Daily is the official newspaper of
China's ruling Communist Party, and the
overseas edition is a smaller circulation
offshoot of the main paper.
Its pronouncements do not necessarily directly
reflect leadership views, but this commentary
by a professor at Shanghai's Tongji University
suggested considerable official alarm at the
strains buckling world financial markets.
China's central bank earlier this week cut its
lending rate for the first time in six years, a
move analysts said was aimed at bolstering
the economy and the battered stock market.
"The eruption of the U.S. sub-prime crisis has
exposed massive loopholes in the United
States' financial oversight and supervision,"
writes the commentator, Shi Jianxun.
"The world urgently needs to create a
diversified currency and financial system and
fair and just financial order that is not
dependent on the United States."
But Vice Premier Wang Qishan, on a visit to
the United States, told U.S. trade officials in a
meeting on Tuesday that China and the
United States needed to maintain close
economic ties with global markets going
through such turbulence.
"The Chinese government is well aware of the
fact that the United States, which is the
world's largest developed country, and China,
which is the world's largest developing
country, should have constructive and
cooperative economic and trade relations," he
said. China is a major buyer of U.S. Treasury
bonds, and through its sovereign wealth fund
it has taken stakes in two large U.S. financial
institutions.
In July 2005, China revalued the yuan and
freed it from a dollar peg to float within
managed bands. But the yuan and China's
trade remains tightly linked to the fortunes of
the dollar. The commentary suggested China
must brace for grave economic fallout and
look to alternatives, saying the crisis brings to
mind the Great Depression of the 1930s.
"Lehman Brothers announced bankruptcy will
not only have a domino effect on the global
financial world, it will bring a shock to the
world economy," the front-page comment
