Steels for

Oil- and Gas-

Exploration
02
In search of new oil and gas sources high performance
steels with dened mechanical, physical and chemical
properties are required.
New oil and gas elds have been identied in large
depths under the sea. The tools for exploring these
elds are exposed to various rock formations and
aggressive media which react with the tools being used.
Depending on the ambient conditions special high strength steels with
a high resistance to corrosion are required.
Deutsche Edelstahlwerke possess more than 150 years of experience
in the development and production of special steels and are thus ideally
suited to be your partner in the supply of special steels.
This brochure provides information about the production routes for
special oil tool steels and the products which we are able to deliver.
Furthermore, mechanical and physical properties as well as the corrosion
resistance properties of stainless grades are provided.

Corros|on propert|es
ln o|| and gas fe|d app||cat|ons, the mater|a|s
used are a|ways subjected to corros|ve cond|-
t|ons of vary|ng sever|ty. ln fact the dw|nd||ng
reserves are forc|ng exp|orat|on |n ever |ncrea-
s|ng|y harsh env|ronments wh|ch are sour and/
or conta|n h|gh |eve|s of ch|or|des. ln add|t|on to
th|s, the comb|nat|on of mater|a|s used and the
h|gh strengths wh|ch are requ|red |ead to a host
of d|fferent forms of corros|on wh|ch have to
be avo|ded. Some of the most common forms
of corros|on wh|ch are encountered |nc|ude:
P|tt|ng corros|on res|stance
Th|s form of corros|on occurs when the pro-
tect|ve pass|ve f|m on sta|n|ess stee|s |s |oca||y
damaged, a||ow|ng the corros|ve env|ronment
to come |nto contact w|th the unprotected
surface of the meta|. The pass|ve f|m |s capab|e
of regenerat|ng |tse|f, prov|ded that oxygen |s
present |n the env|ronment, but |n the presence
a h|gh concentrat|ons of ch|or|de |ons, |t |s pos-
s|b|e that the rate of destruct|on of the pass|ve
f|m |s faster than the regenerat|on and th|s then
resu|ts |n |oca||sed corros|on or p|tt|ng. Once
p|ts have formed, they cont|nue to grow at
an ever |ncreas|ng rate unt|| |n extreme cases
the meta| |s perforated.
The res|stance of an a||oy to th|s, unfortunate|y
common, form of corros|on can be est|mated
emp|r|ca||y by us|ng the so-ca||ed p|tt|ng
res|stance equ|va|ent number or PREN,
wh|ch |s based on the chem|ca| compos|t|on
of the stee|. Genera||y speak|ng, the h|gher th|s
number, the better the res|stance to p|tt|ng.
PREN = %Cr + 3,3 x %Mo + 16 x %N.
Further d|fferent|at|on |s g|ven by the p|tt|ng
potent|a| or the Cr|t|ca| P|tt|ng Temperature
(OPT} wh|ch |s determ|ned by fo||ow|ng the
ASTM G61 and G150.
Ga|van|c corros|on
lt |s a|most |mposs|b|e to avo|d th|s type of
corros|on wh|ch ar|ses due to potent|a| d|ffe-
rences wh|ch ar|se when two d|ss|m||ar meta|s
are p|aced |n contact w|th one another |n an
e|ectro|yte (corros|ve env|ronment}. Th|s essen-
t|a||y resu|ts |n the format|on of a battery |n wh|ch
one of the meta|s, the |ess nob|e, corrodes
preferent|a||y to protect the more nob|e meta|.
Th|s form of corros|on can be reduced by
ensur|ng that the potent|a| d|fference between
two contacted meta|s |s as sma|| as poss|b|e
and by |nsu|at|ng the meta|s so that they are
not |n e|ectr|ca| contact w|th one another. Tests
to determ|ne the suscept|b|||ty of meta|s to th|s
form of corros|on |nc|ude v|sua| exam|nat|on
after |mmers|on |n an e|ectro|yte (140,000 ppm
ch|or|de, 71 O, 14 days}.
Stress corros|on crack|ng (SCC|
Th|s form of corros|on ar|ses when a suscept|b|e
mater|a| |s p|aced |n a ch|or|de or other ha||de
conta|n|ng env|ronment and then subjected to
tens||e stresses. These stresses can e|ther be
res|dua| or app||ed. The remova| of any one of
these cond|t|ons resu|t |n the avo|dance of SOO.
From th|s we can see that the res|dua| and ap-
p||ed stresses must be kept as |ow as poss|b|e
or that steps are taken to ensure that on|y com-
press|ve stresses are present. The |atter requ|re-
ment |s the reason for the purpusefu| deformat|on
of the |nner surface of the ho||ow bars to pro-
duce h|gh compress|ve res|dua| stresses.
H|gh n|cke| contents are a|so known to promote
stress corros|on crack|ng and |t |s for th|s reason
that h|gh grade non mags are not a||oyed w|th
s|gn|fcant amounts of n|cke|. Susceptab|||ty
to SOO can be measured accord|ng to ASTM
G36, G123.
Intergranu|ar corros|on
A|though th|s form of corros|on |s read||y
avo|dab|e by accurate contro| of the chem|ca|
ana|ys|s and by perform|ng adequate heat
treatment, many customers requ|re proof that
the stee|s supp||ed are free from |ntergranu|ar
corros|on (lGO}. The most common tests to
determ|ne freedom from lGO are performed
accord|ng to ASTM A 262, Pract|ce A and E.
