F_RMlab: Fabrication Through Research & Media

F_RMlab is a graduate student initiated digital design and fabrication research
collective formed to promote design based computational skills and discourse at
the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. With interests in digital design
and physical computation, grads at F_RMlab are deeply invested in research
focused on responsive environments, interactive interface and digital fabrication.
The group embodies a comprehensive digital research agenda based on three
categories: software, hardware and fabrication/prototyping, all of which build
of of each other and in turn create integrative design processes. Such processes
are broadly implemented in our collective work and a series of installations in
collaboration with other research groups to generate interactive installations and
prototypes as a launch for projected environments at large. Additionally, F_RMlab
values the importance of peer to peer teaching and learning. The collective directs
much of its energy on hosting workshops and seminars as a platform for cross
disciplinary skill development and experience sharing to further advance personal
skills and student research.

SKY CITY Proposal
Sky City aims to redirect the human vision towards the sky. A dream of the
city in the sky we seemed to have lost in the transition into the twenty-
frst century. Sky City is an interactive installation which allows the user
to build their own Sky City from our foating block units. The blocks are
aligned on a matrix of wires and foatying system which allows seamless
construction similar to that of Lego toys. Sky City is will also be a study
of future urban visions and the transformation of a cityscape throughout
the night both in the sky and in Toronto.

Infatable Landscapes
November 2012 - Future Public Environment - one day workshop with SUNY Bufalo
Situated Technologies
The project explores the idea of soft architectures and proposes an alternative
strategy for the bioremediation of the banks of the Golden Horn in Istanbul. A
series or infatable buoys line the shoreline, acting as remediation network hubs as
they analyze water quality and potentially ofer a responsive public space along the
harbour front as they react to human presence.

F_KE CUBE
November 2013 - Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture 2013 conference, installation
by F_RMLAB on behalf of Waterloo School of Architecture
The CUBE is an undergraduate initiative exploring fabrication techniques and the
feld of interactive architecture. Stemming from the groundwork of Field Guide,
exhibited at the Gladstone Hotel last April, The Cube brings a sense of discovery to
an interactive canopy, encouraging the user to engage with the components in a
playful and intimate setting.
