Levelling and Contouring

1. For the following level readings : (2.06), 2.21,3.20, (1.82), 1.45, 0.95,(2.22),1.24,1.02m,
knowing that the readings between brackets are backsights, calculate the reduced levels
of all points if the reduced level of the first point is 14.50 m and check the results .

2. The staff readings observed with a level were : 3.25, 3.85, 1.88, 2.25, 1.92, 2.52, 2.54,
1.54, 2.11m. The level position was changed after the second and fifth readings.
Calculate the reduced level of all points if the reduced level of the fifth point is 25.53m
and check the results.

3. The following staff readings were taken every 30 m in a leveling along the center line of
a roadway , and the natural ground surface has a uniform gradient in one direction :
3.15, 2.66, 2.26, 1.98, 2.17, 1.87, 1.69, 1.85,1.58, 1.37, 1.55, 1.13m . Calculate the
reduced levels of all points if the reduced level of the last point is 23.45 m and check the
results .

4. Copy the following table, then, fill in the missing staff readings and reduced levels :
Point
Staff Reading (m)
Height of Plane
of Collimation
Reduced
Level
BS IS FS
1 1.52 12.72 x.xxx
2 x.xxx 12.18 m
3 0.68 x.xxx x.xxx 11.47 m
4 x.xxx 1.73 11.85 x.xxx
5 2.20 x.xxx

5.The following staff readings were taken along the center line of a roadway and the
readings between brackets are backsights : (2.02),1.92, 2.25, 1.49, 2.23, 2.02, 1.98,
(1.23), 0.93, (1.69), 2.20, 2.35, knowing that the elevation of the first point is 42.2 m,
calculate the elevation of all points, and draw to a horizontal scale 1 : 1000 and a
vertical scale 1 : 50 a longitudinal section of the road center line if the distance
between each two successive points is 20 m.

6. Draw a sketch showing contour lines of a hill if the level of the bottom and the top of
the hill are 22 m and 34 m respectively.The contour interval is 2 m.

7. The following figure represents the grid
levelling of a small part of land, the cells
are 40m x 40m, and the values indicated at
the nodes represent the reduced levels in
meters for the nodes :
a- Draw the plan of the grid using scale
1: 1000.
b- Draw the contour lines with a contour
interval 0.5 m.
c- Calculate the volume that will be
removed to level the land at elevation of
5.0m.

8. The following figure represents the grid
levelling of a small part of land, the cells
are 20m x 20m, and the values indicated at
the nodes represent the reduced levels in
meters for the nodes :
a- Draw the plan of the grid using scale
1: 500.
b-Draw the contour lines with a contour
interval 1.0 m.
c-If the land will be leveled at elevation of
12.0m, show the cut and fill areas on
the figure.
