Introduction:

The Global Positioning System (GPS), which originated in the United
States in the late 1970s, is widely recognized as the worlds most accurate
method of navigation. The GPS is also well known for precision time signals
that synchronize global information network systems utilizing fiber optics,
satellites, radio, coaxial cable, and copper wire. Being an embedded
technology, the GPS is not generally visible in personal computers,
automobiles, surveying equipment, weather tracking systems, military
munitions, electronic receivers, and other products incorporating the
technology.

Since its creation by the U.S. Department of Defense almost 25 years ago
(at a cost of about $12 billion) and its emergence into broader public
awareness subsequent to becoming available for civilian use in 1984, the GPS
has evolved into a wide range of technologies that have provided an enormous
range of benefits for consumers. For example, numerous police, fire, and
emergency medical services have incorporated the GPS into vehicles to
ensure the quickest possible response in life-or-death situations. Automobile
manufacturers offer GPS-aided map displays that give directions to drivers on
display screens and through synthesized voice instruction. The GPS has
proven to be invaluable to hikers, golfers, cyclists, and other recreational users
by providing precise directions. The system is likely to be incorporated into
cellular phones to pinpoint location in emergency situations. Aviation, mining,
construction, and other commercial and industrial activities have been
enhanced by the precise positioning provided by the GPS. Although privacy
2

concerns could present a significant barrier regarding the monitoring of
individual activities, the GPS can be used to determine shopping patterns and
customer profiles to improve sales and inventory management. Expanding
use and popularity have caused the GPS to become an information technology
that is part of the emerging global information infrastructure.

How GPS works:

The operation of the GPS relies on signals received from the 24
NAVSTAR satellites, each of which orbit in space about 11,000 miles above
the earths surface. The satellites are positioned so that at least four satellites
are always above the earths horizon from every point on earth. GPS
satellites revolve around the earth twice a day (or once every 12 hours) and
transmit signa1s to GPS receivers positioned on or above the earths surface.
GPS receivers, which process data emitted from GPS satellites, compare the
time the satellite signal was transmitted with the time the signal reaches the
receiver. The receiver is then able to determine its precise distance from the
satellite. By determining the distances from three satellites (a method known
as triangulation), the GPS receiver determines the users position and reveals
it on a display screen. A GPS receiver must use signals from at least three
satellites to calculate two dimension positions (latitude and longitude) and
track movement. By using signals of four or more satellites, a receiver can
determine the users three dimension position (latitude, longitude, and altitude).
Once the users two or three dimension position has been determined, other
information such as speed, bearing, tracking, distance to destinations, and
time of sunrise or sunset can be determined.

The GPS provides two levels of service: (1) Precise Positioning Service
(PPS) and (2) Standard Positioning Service (SPS). The PPS is a restricted
highly accurate positioning, velocity, and timing service designed primarily for
the U.S. military/government and foreign allies. The SPS was originally
designed to provide civil users with a less accurate positioning capability than
PPS through the use of a technique known as Selective Availability (SA).

Thailand GPS Industry:

The current GPS market industry in Thailand is considered to be in the
growth stage. There are currently many companies ranging in different sizes,
from small operations specializing in a single or few GPS products to large
vertically integrated multinational corporations producing a diverse line of
products. The industry is generally comprised of commercial electronics
firms; aviation suppliers and manufacturers; military suppliers; automotive
electronics suppliers; and various consumer product manufacturers.
Thailand producers of GPS products generally supply domestic and
international markets through retail outlets, distributors, affiliated international
sales, and service network systems. A producers competitiveness is
generally influenced by the ease at which products can be used, physical
characteristics (including size, weight and power consumption), product
reliability, price, vendor reputation and other factors.
According to a recent report by National Science and Technology
Development Agency (NSTDA), the countrys Global Positioning System is
growing, with its overall value expected to reach 4 billion Baht this year.

market, the company needs to be able to provide not just hardware and
software installation, but also after-sale service and able to provide server
systems for mid-high level income customers as well.

are also a direct competitor who manufactures their own brands of goods as
well. As of present, DTC now has more than 300 staffs and employees and
have already sold and provided services based on their own researches and

Analysis of Problems and Solutions:

During the three month period of internship within Global5 company, I
have learned a multitude of valuable experiences and knowledge. Going into
this internship, I was initially introduced to what the company does and how it
operates by given detailed explanations from my supervisor. Initially for the
first few weeks, my first assignment was to understand the features of how
each GPS trackers and navigators operate. By studying the product line, I
would therefore be able to have sufficient knowledge in operating each device
when dealing with future assigned jobs such as being part of the sales team,
technician and in-store salesperson.

Sales Team

When the company receives inquiries and orders from customers or B2B,
the sales team is then required to contact with customers to discuss their
needs, and prepare a presentation of the products and services. Next the
sales person would then have to negotiate the prices and terms of sales and
service agreements. In addition, the sales person would need to be
responsible by staying in contact with the customers for any follow up services.
Because the sales person would require experience in negotiating (mostly in
Thai language), thus as an internship student I did not have the ability to do so,
therefore I have only taken the role as an observer to learn. The main problem
I have encountered for this particular job was in understanding process of
negotiation. However, as the frequency of following the sales team increased, I
22

gradually spotted some key points and factors which affect the decision
process in negotiation.

Technician

The job of a technician is to help customers setup the products internal
settings for both hardware and software based on their personal requirements.
Next, is to be able to install the product either being a tracking device or a
navigator onto the customers vehicle. Being a technician would also require
to do periodic maintenances from customers that have encountered problems
as well. The main problems I have encountered were making errors in the
setup and installation processes which caused the product to work
unexpectedly. For example, customers couldnt receive feedback reports
from the tracking device, due to an incorrect setting within the software.
Other problem that I had encountered was during installment, in which the
product didnt operate properly caused by incorrectly connecting different
colored wires. However, I was lucky to have a senior technician by my side,
constantly giving me help and solutions for the technical problems I have
encountered.

In-store Salesperson

The in-store salesperson is responsible for selling products directly to
customers that come to the head office, by helping customers identify their
needs, help customers in comparing different products to help them make
decision, and teach customers how to operate them. In addition, while being
23

assigned to be as an in-store salesperson I was also given the task to help
set-up and maintain merchandise displays. Problems that I have
encountered were mainly due to language skills. Sometimes I have trouble in
pronouncing certain words and technical terms in Thai, thus I occasionally
would require help from my supervisor or other employees.

Conclusion:

Overall, I have achieved my goal as an internship trainee by learning how
the company Global5 operates in different departments. Not only did I learn
the marketing process and what is required of the marketing department, but I
was able to learn about several other areas of how business operates as well.
For example, learning technical knowledge and experience with GPS related
technologies and products. In addition, I have also gained some valuable
experience and skills as a sales person, by developing crucial communication
skills and learned how to improve my time management skills as well as
self-motivation. I have been able to meet and network with so many people
that I am sure will be able to help me with opportunities in the future and have
got insight into what really goes on in professional practice. The internship
overall has broaden my business scope of vision and helped identified my
strengths and weaknesses. As of now, I am still not yet decided what kind of
job I would pursue after graduation, but working as an internship in Global5
definitely gave me some insights as to what type of businesses I would like to
be in for the near future.
