COMMUNITY NEWS:

CAMP SPACE STILL AVAILABLE

Do you know of a child that needs something to do this summer? CARE, Inc. still has
opening in programs for all ages for four weeks this summer.

We still need volunteers, camp aides and facilitators that would like to share their
talents (sports, dance, arts & crafts, life skills, etc.) with our groups. Please feel free to
sign-up your kid or a kid that you know, who needs something positive to do. You can
also sponsor a community kid for one or more weeks of summer camp. It takes us all
to engage and just as President Obama is now promoting, be My Brother's Keeper.
Help our parents of today, by reading this notice and putting into the hands of those
you know who work or live in Arlington. Our program is open to all. See attached flyer
for more details on our programs. Or go to the site www.careinc1996.wordpress.com

MOVE is an opportunity this summer for African-American males with disabilities
who are rising 9th and 10th graders. It is a 3-day free event, mileage and all meals
provided. It is for students and their parents and will be held in Charlottesville, July
23-25. The focus is on overcoming barriers, becoming self-determined, and graduat-
ing from high school, college and career-ready. Registration is limited to 50 partici-
pants; there are still spaces available. See the attached flyer for more information.

According to researcher, Richard Allington, "summer reading loss accounts for at
least 80 percent of the reading achievement gap by 9th grade." To counter this
trend, for the second summer in a row APS is providing the Traveling Reading
Trolley to Drew families.

The Traveling Reading Trolley will pick-up students and an adult family member
from Drew Model School at 5:30 pm and carry them to the Shirlington Library for a
night of fun that includes library card registration, read alouds and book selection.
Participants will return to Drew at 8:30 pm.

Each week students will learn about a new habitat and enjoy a visit from a live
animal that makes its home there. The Traveling Reading Trolley operates on:
July 9 - July 16 - July 23 - July 30
Families are invited to attend all four sessions.

We are in need of volunteers to assist families on the trolley and at the library. If you
know of anyone who may be interested they can contact me via the email address
below or on 703-228-8129.

As always, we greatly appreciate you sharing this information with your members.
Thank you for all that you do to make a difference at Drew Model School.
