Dr. S.S.Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Panja University, Chan!igarh "b#ective: To study the effects of probiotic foods in treatment of antibiotic related diarrhea. Methodolog: Probiotic foods consist of a live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the human being by improving their gut microbial balance by producing valuable metabolites. Recent advancements in the fields of microbiology and clinical research have proved the efficiency of probiotics in gastrointestinal disorders. Probiotics help in inhibition of bacterial action of Clostri!ium, Salmonella, E.coli etc, decrease production of toxic metabolites, act as barrier to prevent harmful bacteria from colonising the intestines etc. The present study elucidates the efficacy of probiotics in prevention and treatment of diarrhoea associated with the use of antibiotics. Three groups each of two men, two women and two children were analysed for fifteen days and their feedback was studied. One member of each group was given fermented probiotic milk (containing actobacillus casei !hirota", along with their corresponding antibiotic therapy, while the other member of the group only consumed their respective antibiotics. $esult % &onclusion Our result suggests that probiotics can be used to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhoea and that lactoacilli have the potential to be used as anti diarrhoeic agent. #eywords$ Probiotic% health benefit% "actoacillus s#.
