ANNUAL REPORT
2013
Have you ever thought about WHY you do what you do? As
Simon Sinek states in his book Start With Why Any person or
organization can explain what they do; some can even explain
how they are different or better; but very few can clearly articulate
why. Why is not about money or profit - those are results. Why
is the thing that inspires us and inspires those around us.In this
years annual report we will share results, as we always do, but
we are also going to explore the WHY behind the Breast Cancer
Society of Canada and our many supporters. We at the Society
are very fortunate to have passionate and dedicated donors,
volunteers, board members and staff that are very aware of WHY
they do what they do; we will be sharing some of their thoughts.
We would be remiss if we did not touch on the financials for
fiscal 2012-13, after all, our supporters and the public at large
need to know how we are doing as stewards for breast cancer
research funding. We had a great year! Through a lot of hard
work and perseverance we were able to cut costs significantly.
We internalized several functions while at the same time
building capacity and confidence within the office staff to take
on expanded duties. We were able to increase our gross revenue
slightly but more importantly increase our net revenue by almost
30%. This meant we were able to fund even more research this
past year but of course, that is WHY we do what we do!
We, as the leadership team, would like to express our sincere
gratitude to our countless supporters who make all of this
possible. We recognize the trust you put in us to make the very
most of your generosity.
Thank you for a great year.

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada was created over twenty years ago as a legacy to the life of Pamela Greenaway-
Kohlmeier. Below is a segment fromPams Story, as told by her father, Lawrence Greenaway. The full story can be found on
our website at www.bcsc.ca
Time and time again, as we were told by many doctors that not enough research had been done into breast cancer and
that it was necessary to do this research if lives were to be saved in the future, wed ask back, Why doesnt somebody do
something? One day, Kay, my wife, turned to me and said, Why dont you do something about it? The Breast Cancer Society
of Canada received letters patent on September 5th, 1991. Our initial grass-roots effort which started in the southwestern
Ontario communities of SarniaPoint Edward has now grown into a national organization. We are dedicated to raising money
for peer-reviewed research emphasizing the detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer as well as to ultimately
find a cure. Pam knew of our plans to fund breast cancer research and thanked us.
We at the Breast Cancer Society of Canada are very confident in WHY we do what we do. We exist and we fund research
because of Pam and all of the other breast cancer patients that must travel the treatment journey.
THE WHY BEHIND THE BREAST CANCER SOCIETY OF CANADA
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
BON VOYAGE CRUISE FOR THE CURE
Barry Foot, owner/operator of Expedia CruiseShipCenters in Richmond Hill and
Thornhill Ontario, lost his wife, Mary, to breast cancer in January of 2009. Mary left
behind her husband and two young sons, David and Joshua.
Mary loved to cruise and when it became apparent that Mary was losing her personal
battle with breast cancer, Barry made a commitment to his beloved wife. Barry
vowed to create Cruise For the Cure in Marys memory; gathering people each year
for a one week cruise with a portion of the cabin price dedicated to breast cancer
research. In 2010 the first Cruise for the Curesailed and has since become one of the
Breast Cancer Society of Canadas most popular events.
KELLY AND JOHN BAINES, BOWLING FOR
BOOBS ORGANIZERS
After losing her mother to breast cancer several years ago, Kelly Baines thought the
best way to honour her memory would be to put her favourite pastime to work
raising money. At the young age of 14 she had to fight back. Which is why, in 2010, she
began the event Bowling for Boobs; a fundraiser to support breast cancer research.
That first year, with the help of her father John and many dedicated volunteers they
raised $12,000 for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. Bowing for Boobs continues
to grow year over year and has raised an amazing total of almost $90, 000 to date!

OUR VOLUNTEERS
OUR TUESDAY LADIES
Not many organizations can boast having 4 dedicated ladies who come in every Tuesday for a full days work! Cheryll, Linda,
Barb and Kay-Ann come in with their sleeves rolled up every week ready to do what they can to keep our office organized
and efficient. As if thats not enough, they are valued committee members for our annual Pamela Greenaway Kohlmeier
Memorial Golf Tournament. Our Tuesday Ladies are often called upon to give their valued opinions and feedback on various
events and projects. Their presence brings a smile to everyone in the office and the Breast Cancer Society of Canada is truly
grateful to have these four amazing women all to ourselves each week!

VOLUNTEERS - WE COULDNT DO IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP!
The Bosom Buddy volunteer program is one of the most valued resources of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. We are very
fortunate to have two very dedicated groups. Our local branch keeps us efficient and well-organized; they tackle everything
from office tasks to event planning. They tirelessly hammer out every detail to ensure that the Mothers Day Walk and Pam
Greenaway-Kohlmeier Memorial Golf Tournament are truly worthy of Pams memory.
Our off-site volunteers have evolved into an important arm of our organization. Especially the greater Toronto group who
have taken major strides in filling a gap that a regional based organization like ours faces. In 2012, our Toronto group took the
lead on many of the Mothers Day Walk responsibilities, not only in their community but in others too! GTA Bosom Buddies
Ryan Reinoso and Gillian Brunning, travelled to Cornwall Ontario as our representatives to assist and support a Mothers
Day Zumbathon hosted by cleo. This in a nutshell encompasses what the Bosom Buddy program was created to do: to act
on behalf of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada to provide the one-on-one approach with our donors, supporters and
business partners. This personal touch philosophy is at the heart of our grassroots culture.
Share your energy, passion, skills and knowledge. Join our Bosom Buddy team today at 1-800-567-8767 or bcsc@bcsc.ca.

Twenty-two years ago Pam Greenaway-Kohlmeiers family and friends walked together in her honour, raising $2,000. How
befitting that the Mothers Day Walk was the very first event held by the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. Pam continues to
be our inspiration.
cleo has been our Mothers Day Walk national partner for the past 11 years. cleo, a ladies retail store, hosted in-store activities
leading up to the May celebration. Sarnia, Edmonton, Mississauga and Kincardine took to the beautiful park trails for their
walks, while 80 cleo stores held indoor mall walks or Zumba workouts. Together we truly celebrated all the special women
in our lives.
A very special thank you to the staff of cleo, their loyal customers, sponsors, our volunteers and all who participated and
donated in order to help raise funds for breast cancer research in Canada! www.mothersdaywalk.ca

GRANTS
Over the years the Breast Cancer Society of Canada has awarded more
than $4.4 million to the Pamela Greenaway Kohlmeier Translational
Breast Cancer Research Unit (TBCRU) located at London Health Sciences
in London, Ontario. This unit, under the direction of Dr. Ann Chambers, is
world-renowned for its cutting edge breast cancer research. Read on to
learn about the work being done at the TBCRU.
These funds support many aspects of the work at the Pamela
Greenaway Kohlmeier Translational Breast Cancer Research Unit at the
London Regional Cancer Program. This support includes studentships
and post-doctoral fellowships, as well as seed funding of small grants
to jump-start new research ideas. The TBCRU supports a wide variety
of breast cancer research being carried out at the London Regional
Cancer Program as well as multiple departments at Western University,
all focused on understanding the disease better and improving care for
patients.
As of April 1, 2012, Dr. Alison Allan has been appointed as Assistant
Director of the TBCRU, and in this role she will continue to provide strong
leadership and support of the aims and programs of the Unit, assisting
Director Dr. Chambers in these responsibilities.
Training program: The aim of this program is to provide scholarships
for excellent trainees at Western University, working in any appropriate
Department and doing research that has a path to benefit breast cancer
patients. For the academic year 2010-2011, the TBCRU supported 18
graduate student scholarships and 4 post-doctoral fellowships. For the
academic year 2011-2012, the TBCRU is supporting 16 graduate student
scholarships. These trainees were incredibly productive over this time
period. From 2010 to present (March 2012), TBCRU-supported trainees
published 39 research articles, and made 47 local presentations and 41
national/international presentations.
Small Grants Program: The aim of this Program is to provide seed
funding awards to breast cancer researchers at Western, in order to
jump-start new projects and put our scientist in a strong position to
compete for external research support and/or to provide evidence
to improve patient care. In fiscal year 2010-2011, 4 such projects were
supported, and in fiscal year 2011-2012, 1 project was supported.
Examples of recent breast cancer research supported by the Training and
Small Grants Programs:
A clinical trial has been started at the London Regional Cancer Program,
by radiation oncologist Dr. Francisco Perera and translational scientist Dr.
Eva Turley, to learn if a cream developed by Dr. Turleys lab can reduce
skin damage when breast cancer patients receive radiation treatments
Drs. Alan Tuck and Ann Chambers, along with graduate student Connor
MacMillan, are studying what regulates early breast cancer progression,
from ductal carcinoma in situ to invasive cancer and metastases. This
work is important for helping to identify which early tumors are at higher
risk for progression, and may also help in the development of treatments
to prevent pre-invasive tumors from becoming more aggressive.
Trainees working with imaging scientist Dr. Jeffrey Carson are working
on developing better ways to produce images of breast tumors, using
a new technique called 3D photoacoustic imaging. The goal of the
research is to develop a method to diagnose breast tumors sooner and
with greater accuracy, which may reduce the need for biopsy procedures
and minimize the time from diagnosis to treatment.

Graduate student Stephanie Dorman is working with genome
bioinformatics expert Dr. Peter Rogan, to develop improved tests that
more precisely identify molecular genetic changes in breast cancer.
These tests can be used to better predict which tumors will be most
aggressive and to determine which treatments may work best for
individual patients.
Graduate student Lori Lowes, working with translational scientist Dr.
Alison Allan, is working on new ways to detect and study circulating
tumor cells that are found in the blood of breast cancer patients, with the
goals of understanding the biology and clinical implications of these rare
cells in order to help personalize breast cancer patient treatment.
