Seni or Book Cl ub
The Senior Book Club is
reading a new comic mystery
novel about two women who are forced to re-
imagine who they are and what they are
capable of. The All-Girl Filling Stations Last
Reunion is a perfect combination of comedy,
mystery, wisdom, and charm. Fun-loving,
spanning decades and generations, and
centered on a little-known aspect of Americas
twentieth-century story, the novel was written
by Fannie Flagg, a born storyteller. Nancy
Knott will host the discussion of the book on
July 24, 2014.
The other book we chose to read for a
September discussion is Defending Jacob.
Award-winning author William Landay has
written the consummate novel of an embattled
family in crisisa suspenseful, character-
driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale
of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at
which our lives can spin out of control. We
invite you to get one or both of these books
and join us for a fun fellowship of discussion.

SeniorsMeetTuesday
June17,2014
The seniors are meeting
this coming Tuesday, June 17 at 12:00 P.M. in
Chapman Lounge. We have had a month off
and now it is back to the third Tues of the
month as usual. Our speaker for the day is
Sloan Hamilton. Sloan is the current
Operations Manager at Loch Leven our
regional campsite. She has been the
Operations Manager since 2011 and previously
co-managed the Episcopal Camp at
Wrightwood with her husband, Joseph who
has been her partner since they met at Camp
Paivika (then owned by Crippled Childrens
Society) where he was the Caretaker and she
was the Horse Specialist in 1992.
She has worked in nearly every area of
camp operations (kitchen, maintenance,
program administration) over the past 20 years
and has spent time in the hospitality industry
and in public recreation. She continues to
foster her interest in the field of youth
development through her connections with
American Camps Association and has been
working with PWSR leadership to expand
quality programs for all of our participants at
Loch Leven year-round.
We look forward to hearing from Sloan
and the changes and plans for the future of
Loch Leven. Bring your lunch and join us for
this program this coming Tues at 12 noon.
Sammie

With gifts received
this past Sunday, our 2014 Pentecost Offering
totaled $765 which surpassed our goal by $15.
We thank everyone who participated in
this offering to support new church
development in our Region, as well as across
the United States and Canada as we Disciples
seek to reach our goal of launching 1,000 new
Disciples' congregations between 2000 and
2020. The total of new congregations started is
over 800 plus and growing with nearly 6 years
left until 2020.

"Historic"Meeting?
Everyone at FCCF
sees the historic black and
white photo on the wall
outside Chapman Lounge
of a group of well dressed men, replete with
community band members. Dress hats, dark
suits, serious- looking, and proud men.
Leaders in their day. A witness to the history
of our church and community.
Look at the photo below, and ask
whether in time it might just be the
contemporary version of that older photo.
Let us remember together that on
Saturday June 7, 2014, fifteen men representing
First Christian and Casa de Oracin
congregations came together, broke bread,
asked and listened to each other say in English
and Spanish "How has the world challenged
you this week?", and "How has God blessed
you this week?" They then prayed for each
other and our two congregations. It felt as
though the Holy Spirit had fallen once again
upon a room full of a group of disciples, for
many men vowed to return on Saturday
morning July 12 and bring with him another
man so that the next gathering would be of at
least 25 dedicated men, willing to stand up for
whatever it takes to follow Jesus in our time.

CoffeeLovers,TeaDrinkers,
ChocolateEaters,Cocoa
Sippers,CookieBakers!!!
Look for our table outside next to the
Coffee Cart. Have a sample of coffee, look at
the catalog, and buy something that could
make a huge difference in the lives of so many
people. Purchasing fairly traded products
through the Disciples of Christ Coffee Project,
you are directly supporting the Disciples
Home Missions (DMF) and Week of
Compassion.Supplies are always available in
the church office during the week.

AHastyNote!
On Pentecost Sunday, we read that the
people heard the Disciples speaking to them in
each persons language and dialect. They
heard of Gods mighty acts, and were
transformed. Sunday worship became the
place where people who witnessed Gods acts
of grace in their lives came to share that
witness. I raised the question as to when you
had witnessed Gods mighty acts recently.
That night members of our choir, Mitch, and
the music staff joined forces with choirs from
three other churches. The music was chosen to
portray Jesus life and mission, ultimately
leading to his crucifixion and Resurrection.
For Barbara and me, that performance was
transformative. The 100-plus singers were
dressed in black. Emily, Luanne, and Cam
were some of the soloists. The various
conductors, pianists and organist were superb
in inspiring the ensemble to sing with clarity
and conviction. The music was chosen to meet
a variety of tastes. We witnessed the mighty
act of God that evening as rarely heard before.
Our choir members efforts inspired me to
hope that you will continue to look for Gods
acts of grace such as we experienced that
evening. And if you cant seem to find those
experiences, our own church community is a
good place to begin looking for them.
In love,
Bob Hasty

WhatIsAnOfferingOfLetters?
When we think of offerings,
we most often think of pulling out our wallets
and putting money in an offering plate during
worship, or writing a check in advance of
attending worship and putting it in the
offering plate as we listen to the Offertory.
However, over the years, the Lay Leaders in
our worship services have constantly
reminded us not only about giving money, but
also giving of ourselves. And, many times,
giving of ourselves is more important--
welcoming a stranger, providing food for a
homeless person, reaching out to a troubled
neighbor grieving a loss, volunteering for a
Habitat for Humanity project, or, as we'll have
the opportunity to do on June 29, writing
letters to the members of Congress who
represent us.
Bread for the World, whose sole
purpose is to influence legislation related to
hunger in both the United States and around
the world, has for many years invited members
of churches representing a wide variety of
denominations--Evangelical Covenant, United
Methodist, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian,
Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, as well as us
Disciples, plus others--to participate in an
Offering of Letters.
We are going to be doing our 2014
Offering of Letters on Sunday, June 29. Ben
Stuart and Randy Langston, who are
coordinating this activity, will have letters you
may simply sign, or will provide you with
information so that you can write your own
letters. The church will pay the postage
involved. You may come early to sign, or write,
your letter during the Sunday school hour or,
you may do this immediately before or right
after the worship service. There will also be an
opportunity to be part of this effort after the
lunch which will honor Darrell McGowan, our
Senior Pastor, who will preach for us for the
final time that day. This year's targeted
legislation is the reforming of US Food Aid.
Look for more specific information about the
legislation proposed to address this issue in
"The Caller" that will be published on June 22.
The Outreach Ministry
HowWouldYouFeel.......
As a parent with school
aged kids if you couldn't afford
the supplies on your kid's list?
As a kid who didn't have the supplies
on the list??
As a teacher with a minuscule budget
watching some of his/her students doing
without?
We have an opportunity as a church to
relieve a small portion of the burden from
families and schools by making a donation to
the Outreach Ministry Team. We would like to
donate 25 bags of school supplies to needy
children. The bags would include the
necessities for a successful school year;
notebook, scissors, pencils, pens, and crayons
(to name just a few of the items being included
in the bag). Each bag will cost between $10 -
$15 to fill. It would be wonderful if we could
offer a little hope and comfort to some little
kids who could use this small hand up.
Your donation should be made out to
FCC and indicate in the memo section school
kits. $250 to help so many kids seems very
possible. Let's do what we can to remove some
of the burden from the shoulders of those who
need the help the very most.

FCCFtoHostRegional
Event
We will be hosting a
Pacific Southwest Region
Stewardship Seminar on Saturday, June 21,
from 9:00 A.M. 5:00 P.M.
This is the second of a series of
Stewardship events being offered by the
Region. The topics of this seminar are:
Grant Writing 101 & Legacy Giving. Cost is
$10 and includes lunch. Leaders will be
Marilyn Fiddmont and Nora Jacobs.
If this is something that interests you,
you are encouraged to attend. If you would
like to attend, please let Donna in the office
know so she can get you registered. I hope
that we will have a good presence from our
congregation.

FCCWorkDayWithHabitatFor
Humanity
On Saturday, June 28, there will be a
framing day for Habitat for Humanity at the
new La Habra site. We have been given the
opportunity to help with this project. We are
asked to be there by 7:30 A.M. and be prepared
to work until 3:00 P.M. We will be framing the
first floor of two homes. This will complete the
framing of the first floor of seven new homes.
The first question that is asked by most
is, What do I need to know in order to frame
or help. If you know what end of a hammer to
grab onto, you are qualified. If you do not
know, there will be a 5 second lesson and the
rest of the knowledge will be given on the job
site. There will be supervisors and crew leaders
and Geezers to help and make sure we do the
job properly.
If you are willing to learn and have
some fun, tell Ed Linberg or Craig Wallace by
the 22
nd
of June. The site is located on La Habra
Blvd. across the street from Washington
Middle School. We really need the help.
Craig Wallace

HealingTouchSpiritual
Workshop
On Sat. July 19 from 9:30 A.M. -12:30
P.M., First Christian Church Whittier will be
hosting an Introduction to Healing Touch
Spiritual Ministry: Using Your Hands to
Heaven
The Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry
program helps participants connect energy
healing with their faith, and with the history of
healing in the Church. This program is rooted
in both the Judeo-Christian perspective and
Eastern healing modalities. We recognize that
all healing comes from God, and that we can
be conduits of Gods healing compassion.
For churches, HTSM is an effective
addition to the work of the Elders, Stephen
Ministries and Pastoral Partners calling on
church members who are hospitalized or
homebound.
This workshop will explore many
healing stories in the Bible, discuss the healing
ministry of Jesus and his Disciples, and the
work of the early Church as it continued Jesus
call to heal and anoint. We will also consider
how science contributes to our understanding
of ancient techniques that come to us from
Eastern traditions. Finally, we introduce a
simple technique for the laying-on-of-hands
that can be used in nearly any setting.
Rev. Louise Sloan Goben is the
instructor. Louise is an ordained minister of
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and
serves as Associate Minister at First Christian
Church, North Hollywood. She is also a
Certified Practitioner of Healing Touch
Spiritual Ministry and an instructor with the
Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy.
There will be a $15 suggested donation for the
event. Register with Rev. Kel Henderson,
(714-465-6991) or with Donna in the church
office.
