IV SEMESTER
FLUID MECHANICS
(Effective from the admitted batch 200809)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNIT-I
1. a) What is total pressure? Explain with examples 6
b) A trapezoidal plate of top width 10m, bottom width 8m and
height 4m is immersed vertically in water with its parallel sides
parallel to the water level and its top edge is at a depth of 5m
below the water level. Find the water thrust on one side of the
plate and depth of centre of pressure. 6
OR
2. a) Define and explain stream line, path line and streak line in
fluid mechanics. 6
b) For the following flow, find the equation of the streamline
passing through (1,1) v = 3xi - 3yj 6
UNIT-II
3. a) Derive an expression for loss of head due to friction 6
b) Two pipes of lengths 2500m each and diameters 80cm and 60cm
respectively are connected in parallel. The coefficient of friction
for each pipe is 0.006. The total flow is equal to 250 Lit/sec.
Find the rate of flow in each pipe 6
OR
4. a) Show that loss of head due to sudden expansion in pipe line is
a function of velocity head. 6
b) A 30 x 15cm venturimeter is inserted in a vertical pipe carrying
water flowing in upward direction. A differential mercury
manometer connected to the inlet and throat gives a reading of
30cm. Find the discharge. Take C
d
=0.98 6
UNIT-III
5. A smooth flat plate of length 5m and width 2m is moving with a
velocity of 4m/s in stationary air of density 1.25 kg/m3 and
kinematic viscosity 1.5x10-5 m2s. Determine thickness of the
boundary layer at the trailing edge of the smooth plate. Find the
total drag on one side of the plate assuming that the boundary layer
is turbulent from the very beginning 12
OR
6. For the velocity profile for laminar boundary layer u/U=3/2(y/ ) -
1/2(y/ )
2
. Find the boundary layer thickness, shear stress, drag force
and coefficient of drag in terms of Reynolds number 12
UNIT-IV
7. Discuss the importance of dimensional analysis. Explain with a
typical example the Buckinghams method and Rayleighs methods
of dimensional analysis 12
OR
8. a) Explain the Froudes criteria for similitude and derive the
expression for velocity, time and force ratios 6
b) Model studies are done on a 1/5 scale model at 1200 rpm.
The head developed and power input were found to be 10m and
4.5 kW respectively. The discharge was found to be 35 l/s.
Find the efficiency. If the prototype runs at 360 rpm, find the
head developed and the power required for the prototype 6
UNIT-V
9. a) Derive an expression for velocity of sound wave for compressible
fluids when the process is (i) isothermal (ii) adiabatic 6
b) 5kg of air at 80
0
C and a pressure of 4 bar is allowed to expand
adiabatically so that pressure is 1 bar. Find the temperature of air
and volume of air after the expansion 6

OR
10. a) Express the stagnation pressure as a function of pressure at a
point and temperature ratio for compressible fluids 6
b) Carbon dioxide at 15
0
C is flowing through a horizontal taper pipe.
The area of cross section at inlet and outlet are 50 cm
2
respectively.
If the inlet pressure is 400kPa and the outlet pressure is 300kPa,
find the mass flow rate assuming isothermal conditions. Take
R=188.8 j/kgK and k=1.289
