The West Tisbury Library

Foundation, Inc.
UPDATE Spring/Summer 2014
Grand Re-opening Ceremony, March 22, 2014
Strike Up the Band!
O
n a chilly morning in March, an enthusiastic crowd gath-
ered in the parking lot of the library to witness the re-
sults of the $6 million expansion program that has more
than doubled the size of the old West Tisbury Library and made it
a unique anchor for the community for years to come. Tere was
a brass band, a Scout color guard, a series of speakers, even a last
minute poem by Jennifer Tseng, a member of the library staf.
Te dream that had started with community input sessions had
fnally come to fruition thanks to a wonderful collaboration of the
State, the Town, Te Friends of the West Tisbury Library, Te West
Tisbury Library Foundation, the tireless work of countless volun-
teers and contributions from over 1200 donors. And now everyone
was more than ready see their new library for themselves.
Dan Waters, Vice Chair of the Library Trustees, captured the mo-
ment. Six years ago we began imagining what a bigger better West
Tisbury Library would be like. Four years ago we started raising
funds. Two years ago the Town of West Tisbury gave us the green
light by voting to fund the remaining one and a half million dol-
lars. Today the only thing standing between us and our new library
is this ribbon. And with that Linda Hearn, Chair of the Library
Trustees cut the ribbon and stepped out of the way as the crowd
charged in.
Te way West Tisbury
came together is an example
for towns everywhere; I think
everyone but the shellfsh
constable got involved.
Mary Ann Cluggish,
Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners
Our new library has more than doubled in size, expanding from 5600 to 13,000 square feet. Teres a wonderful kids
area, a teen room, a showcase for art, private meeting rooms, a program room, more stack space and a beautiful light-
flled common area.
Te front of the building has been retained (but renovated and re-clad) to maintain the appearance and feel of the
original, Ben Moore-designed library. And the building and all site works have been designed to achieve LEED certif-
cation.
Im thrilled to fnally be able to welcome the community back to our new home, explained Library Director, Beth
Kramer. Its a truly inspirational space and its going to serve us well for years to come.

A message from the Foundation Chair
Our work is not done!
Dear Library Patrons and Friends,
Te Library Foundation turns fve this year! Te
years have passed quickly, but much has been accom-
plished. With your help, we have completed a highly
successful fundraising campaign and given the town
of West Tisbury almost $2 million toward construc-
tion of the new library. And what a wonderful build-
ing it is!
We are thrilled with the new library, but our work
is not done. We must frst complete the landscaping,
both to beautify these grounds in the heart of West
Tisbury and to protect the sensitive adjacent Mill
Stream watershed. Over time, the library will con-
tinue to need our support to keep pace with the towns
growth, with emerging technology, and with needs
for long-term improvements. As the town and its
need for information and programs continue to grow,
as technology changes, andhard as it is to believe
nowover time, age will take its toll on the new facil-
ity, the library will need even more of our support.
We hope you will continue your habits of giving to
the foundation. Te satisfaction to be gained from
giving to this Island treasure is great, and the benefts
to all of us as individuals and as a community institu-
tion are beyond measure.
Tere are several convenient and rewarding ways
for you to donate to the Foundation. You can make a
donation by mail or our website, buy a brick, become
a sustaining member, name a room or garden, or
include us in your estate planning. Information on
each of these options is available in this newsletter.
Please take a moment and act today!
All of us on the Foundation thank you very much
and wish you a wonderful spring and summer.

Dedication and Recognition of Donors July 20
Te West Tisbury Library Trustees and the Foundation
are pleased to announce the dedication of the librarys
new Community Program Room to David and Rosalee
McCullough. Te public is invited to join library trust-
ees, foundation directors, and library staf on July 20,
2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the library to celebrate the dedica-
tion and to recognize sponsors of other donated rooms
and facilities. Mr. McCullough has served as Honorary
Chairman of the library foundation since its inception.
Mr. and Mrs. McCulloughs leadership and support of
the Foundation, championing this and all libraries in
general, and advocacy on behalf of our community are
honored in this dedication of the Community Program
Room to them.
Tree Foundation Funding Priorities
As the foundation shifs from construction campaign mode into longer-term library support,
three priorities stand out.
Complete Landscaping
Our immediate need is for funds to fnish paying for the landscaping. Landscaping crews have been busy grading and
preparing the soil for planting later this year. Handsome gardens and terraces are planned to beautify the grounds,
link them to the bordering homes and Field Gallery, and protect the adjacent Mill Stream watershed. Much of the
landscaping has been funded, but we are still looking for the funds to pay for the State Road Entry Garden, the North
Terrace, the Young Adults Reading Terrace, and Little Alleys. General contributions will go toward this landscaping,
and we also seek the support of donors who wish to name or to fund one of these garden areas in its entirety.
Programs and equipment not in the town budget
Town funds and additional support from the Friends will provide much (though not all) of the librarys basic annual
operating needs. For the library to bring its patrons the level of programs and service they deserve, additional funds
are needed each year to renew childrens room and digital equipment, pay for guest speakers and performances, and
train the staf in the state of the art of information science. Your annual donation will help greatly with these priori-
ties.
Future building
And fnally, for the long term, funds will be needed for future building made necessary by population growth and
changes in technology and community needs. While its 9000+ card-holders and other patrons revel in the new li-
brary, the Foundation has its eye on the time when advances in technology, growth of the towns population, or simply
age will necessitate future renovations. You can help build our endowment through your annual donations, by becom-
ing a sustaining donor, and by including the Foundation in your estate planning.
Library Grounds to be Landscaped
Weve raised just over two-thirds of the $300,000 needed for 2014. We need your help to raise the
remaining $98,000 this year.
Your donations are needed to help the Foundation expand annual giving, bring in major gifs, and build
an endowment. Tere is great satisfaction to be had in supporting a vital community institution and
knowing that its services provide immediate, tangible, and lasting benefts to a broad range of patrons.

You can experience the satisfaction of giving to the foundation by:
Donating to the Annual Fund. Make your donation to the Foundations annual fund in any amount
using the enclosed remittance envelope.
Buying a Brick. For $150. your personalized, engraved brick will be placed in the walkway to the
library entrance as a permanent and visible personal statement in support of the library.
Becoming a Sustaining Donor. Your donation of $500, $1000, or $1500 a year for a three-year period
will provide the Foundation with a stable stream of income the Foundation can plan on to meet current
needs and to build the endowment.
Making a Major Gif and Securing a Naming
Opportunity. Create an enduring legacy by
making a major gif in your name or in honor or
memory of a loved one. Naming opportunities
are still available. Gardens and outdoor areas
include the State Road Entry Garden, the North
Terrace, the Young Adults Terrace, and Little
Alleys. Indoors areas include the reference area
and librarians ofce, small conference room, and
adult stacks.
Including the Foundation in Your Estate
Planning. Include a tax-benefcial future
donation to the Foundation in your estate plans.
Te Foundation accepts donations in cash,
fnancial instruments, and tangible assets
and property. Te Foundation is a 501c(3)
organization, and donations are tax deductible
to the full extent allowable by law. Contact
Hunter Moorman at 202-309-4896 for further
information on any of these opportunities.
