PURPOSE: To examine the chemical properties of some common elements and compounds.
HYPOTHESIS: I think that in this experiment, based on my previous knowledge, Calcium will not have
any reaction with water, but will practically explode when Hydrochloric acid is added.
REFERENCE: Lab sheet titled Testing Chemical Properties of Substances.
MATERIALS: Refer to lab sheet.
OBSERVATIONS:
Substance Observations after the addition
of water
Observations after the addition
of acid
Magnesium -gas formed on surface of
substance
-changed colours (to white)
-acid caused substance to
dissolve slowly
Calcium -created much gas, specifically
bubbles
-made the Graduated Cylinder
change from room temperature,
to extremely hot.
-produced a large amount of gas
-vapour was created
-substance spilled over
Sodium Carbonate -created a small amount of gas
-partially dissolved
-produced small amount of gas
-substance dissolved entirely
Sodium Chloride -no reaction
-did not dissolve
-no gas
-dissolved partially

ANALYZE AND INTERPRET:
Q 1. Which substances have reaction with water as one of their physical properties?
A: Calcium and Magnesium both would have water as one of their physical properties, especially
Calcium.
Q 2. Which substances have reaction with acids as one of their chemical properties?
A: Every substance excluding Sodium Chloride (Table Salt), had a reaction with the acid, and would have
reaction with acid as one of their chemical properties.
CONCLUDE AND COMMUNICATE:
3. A chemical property is any characteristic that gives a substance the ability to endure a change that
would result in a new substance. Chemical properties are different than physical properties because
physical properties are those that can be described/identified without adding an additional substance or
changing the identity of the substance. Example: Wax Paper is Translucent.
Where as Chemical Properties describe the ability of a substance to react with another substance
causing an entirely different substance to form. Example: Corrosion, Toxicity and Oxidation are Chemical
Properties .
4. MAGNSIUM:
Chemical Properties: Physical Properties:
-solid
-silver
-odourless
-smooth, thin
-high lustre
-high conductivity
- no solubility in water
-high conductivity in solution
