Data Interpretation
Data Interpretation, the one of the easiest, time taking and scoring topic of the Bank Exams.
Everybody knows this fact... but people pay less attention on this area. But unfortunately in SBI
PO Exam, the complete aptitude section will depend on Data Interpretation.

In this section , we shall discuss about the basics Data Interpretation. The Data Interpretation
is also called as comprehension of mathematics. Because, in reading comprehension, we have
to study the passage and answer the questions followed by that passage. In the same way, in Data
Interpretation, some data is given in the form of graphs, charts and tables followed by questions.
We have to study, understand and analyze the data to solve the questions. Here we have to keep
in mind that, even a 10th standard boy can solve these problems. But you've to solve these
problems in time

now lets come to our topic

Data :
Data is a collection of facts, such as values or measurements. It can be numbers, words,
measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things.

Information :
Information refers to data being arranged and presented in a systematic or an organise form, so
that some useful inference can be drawn from the same. By data we generally mean quantities,
figures, statistics, relating to any event.

So what is this Data Interpretation?

The Data Interpretation is the extraction (or usage) of maximum information from a given set of
data or information. The data can be presented either in the form of a table or a bar chart or a pie
chart or a line graph or as a combination of one of these formats.

now lets have a look at some tips in solving the Data Interpretation Problems :

Before starting DI section one should be very comfortable with numbers, calculations, fractions,
percentages, averages, ratios. It helps in reducing the time required for solving the questions.

3

3

Scan the data briefly to see what it is about, but here do not attempt to analyse it in too much
detail before reading a question. Focus on only those aspects of the data that are necessary to
answer the question.

Be sure to read all notes related to the data.

When possible, try to make visual comparisons of the data given in a graph and estimate products
and quotients rather than perform involved computations. Remember that these questions are to
be answered only on the basis of the data given, everyday facts (such as the number of days in a
year), and your knowledge of mathematics.

Do not make use of specific information you recall that might relate to the particular situation on
which the questions are based unless that information can be derived from the date provided.

Now lets have a look at the types of the DIAGRAMS which are used ind data Interpretations and
shall do some problems on them. (Click on the name of the Data Interpretation model for
the description and model problems.

Bar Diagrams
Multiple Bar Diagrams
Subdivided / Component Bar Diagrams
Line Graphs
Pie Charts
Tables
Bar Diagrams
The Bar Diagram is the basic model of the Data Interpretation Problems.
The bar diagram is a two
dimensional graphic representation where the elementary graphic objects are a set of rectangles or bars drawn in parallel so that the
extension of the same is proportional to the magnitude they intend to represent.

Here the rectangles, or bars, can be either horizontally or vertically positioned.

If only one bar is given in the graph, then that diagram is called a simple bar diagram.

Have a look at the Following bar diagram. It gives us the information of the production of a company in various years.

4

4

Now lets have a look at a problem based on this Simple Bar diagram.

What is the average production of the company over the years ? (followed by some options)

Now just find out the average of the production.

So here, 333 is the answer. ( Remember, here you should add all the terms mentally and put that
2000 on paper and then divided that with 6.
Subdivided / Component Bar Diagrams
The Sub Divided / Component bar diagrams are used to represent data in which the total
magnitude (bar) is divided into different parts or components. In these type of diagrams, first
they make simple bars for each class taking total magnitude in that class and then divide these
simple bars into parts in the ratio of various components. With an example we shall try to
understand the Concept.

Assume that you have to give the data of the production of vehicles of 3 companies (name them
P, Q and R) over the years 1994 to 2000.

5

5

The questions will be like this. What is the difference between the production of Q in the
years 1997 and 1999 ? (followed by some options)

Sol :

The Production of Q in 1997 is (40 -17.5) = 22.5 thousand.

The Production of Q in 1999 is (32.5-12.5) = 20 thousand.

The Difference = 22500 - 20000 = 2500

So, the answer is 2500.
Line Graphs
The line graph is another important type of graph. The line graph displays information as a series
of data points connected by some straight line segments (or simply lines). You can simply say
that the Line Graph is the graph which uses points connected by lines to show how something
changes in value. Lets have a look at an example Line Graph so that we can understand the topic
in detail.

Single Line Graph :

The following Line Graph gives the production of a company over the years 1999 to 2005.

6

6

Now the problem question will be like this. In how many of the following years was
the production of the company above the average? (followed by some
options)

Sol :

The Average Production =

So clearly it is visible that the production is above average in 3 years.

Multiple Line Graph :

The following Graph shows the profit of two companies A and B (In Lakhs) over the years 2000
to 2005.

7

7

Now the question will be like this. What is the difference between the average profit
of the companies A and B over the years? (followed by some options)

Sol :

So 3.33 Lakhs is the answer :)
Pie Chart
You might have observed the Pie Charts while reading about Budget. The pie chart is a circular
chart which is sectors. In a pie chart, the arc length of each sector (and consequently its central
angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents. As we've already said, these charts
are more
useful while showing the percentages and ratios. Lets discuss these type of problems with an example. The following Pie - Chart
shows the different colors of cars using by the 7200 people of a town.

8

8

Tables
All of us know what the TABLE is.... Here the Data is given in the form of rows and columns. A
row is a series of cells going horizontally across the table. A column is a series of cells going
vertically or up and down the table. We have to analyze these rows and columns and should
answer the questions according to them. Lets have a look at an example. The following table
gives the data of the number of computers produced by five companies namely P, Q, R, S and T
over the years 2004 to 2009 (the production is in Thousands).

Now the question will be like, The percentage lead in the production of computers
by company R from 2005 to 2006 was ? (followed by some options)

So the Answer is 50%

9

9

Now the question will be like, How many persons are using RED color cars ? (followed by
some options)

Sol : The Number of persons using Red color cars is

so the answer is 1440.

This is all about D.I friends
Lets discuss problems based on this topic

SOLVED

EXAMPLE
I . The following table gives the percentage distribution of population of five states, P, Q, R, S
and T on the basis of poverty line and also on the basis of sex.
State
Percentage of Population below the Poverty
Line
Proportion of Males and Females
Below Poverty
Line
Above Poverty
Line
M : F M : F
P 35 5 : 6 6 : 7
Q 25 3 : 5 4 : 5
R 24 1 : 2 2 : 3
S 19 3 : 2 4 : 3
T 15 5 : 3 3 : 2

1.If the male population above poverty line for State R is 1.9 million, then the total population of
State R is?
A. 4.5 million B. 4.85 million
C. 5.35 million D. 6.25 million
Answer: Option D

11

11

Explanation:
Let the total population of State R be x million.
Then, population of State R above poverty line
= [(100 - 24)% of x] million
=

76
x x

million
100
And so, male population of State R above poverty line
=

2
x

76
x x

million
5 100
But, it is given that male population of State R above poverty line = 1.9 million.

2
x

76
x x

= 1.9 x =
5 x 100 x 1.9
= 6.25.
5 100

76 x 2
Total population of State R = 6.25 million.

2. What will be the number of females above the poverty line in the State S if it is known that the
population of State S is 7 million?
A. 3 million B. 2.43 million
C. 1.33 million D. 5.7 million
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Total population of State S = 7 million.
Population above poverty line
= [(100 - 19)% of 7] million
= (81% of 7) million
12

12

= 5.67 million.
And so, the number of females above poverty line in State S
=

3
x 5.67

million
7
= 2.43 million.
3. What will be the male population above poverty line for State P if the female population
below poverty line for State P is 2.1 million?
A. 2.1 million B. 2.3 million
C. 2.7 million D. 3.3 million
Answer: Option D
Explanation:
Female population below poverty line for State P = 2.1 million
Let the male population below poverty line for State P be x million.
Then, 5 : 6 = x : 21 x =
2.1 x 5
= 1.75.
6
Population below poverty line for State P = (2.1 + 1.75) million = 3.85 million.
Let the population above poverty line for State P by y million.
Since, 35% of the total population of State P is below poverty line, therefore, 65% of the total
population of State P is above poverty line i.e., the ratio of population below poverty line to that
above poverty line for State P is 35 : 65.
35 : 65 = 3.85 : y y =
65 x 3.85
= 7.15.
35
Population above poverty line for State P = 7.15 million and so, male population above
poverty line for State P
=

6
x 7.15

million
13
= 3.3 million.
13

13

4.If the population of males below poverty line for State Q is 2.4 million and that for State T is 6
million, then the total populations of States Q and T are in the ratio?
A. 1:3 B. 2:5
C. 3:7 D. 4:9
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
For State Q:
Male population below poverty line = 2.4 million.
Let the female population below poverty line be x million.
Then, 3 : 5 = 2.4 : x x =
5 x 2.4
= 4.
3
Total population below poverty line = (2.4 + 4) = 6.4 million.
If N
q
be the total population of State Q, then,
25% of N
q
= 6.4 million N
q
=

6.4 x 100

million = 25.6 million.
25
For State T:
Male population below poverty line = 6 million.
Let the female population below poverty line be y million.
Then, 5 : 3 = 6 : y y =
3 x 6
= 3.6.
5
Total population below poverty line = (6 + 3.6) = 9.6 million.
If N
t
be the total population of State T, then,
15% of N
t
= 9.6 million N
t
=

9.6 x 100

Million = 64 million.
15
Thus, Required ratio =
N
q

=
25.6
= 0.4 =
2

DATA SUFFICIENCY
Important facts to keep in mind while dealing with D.S
1) DS problems, we need to answer if it is sufficient information to answer, means, there should
be one conclusive answer. We do not need to find the answer, just if it can be found or not?
2) Some questions ask , is this true? So if we can find that the information available is enough
to prove that it is not, we are still able to answer the question, that it is not true. Hence we are
able to answer the question.
3) Check for all possibilties, that is using one statement, using second, then only combine the
two.

Have a glance at this pattern
