Questions 31 35
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
The alfalfa is believed to have come from Iran. It grows in plenty for years.
Alfalfa, beans, peas and clover belong to the same family. The average height of
this plant is about half a metre though some may grow to as tall as one metre. It
looks like grass, but at a closer look small purplish flowers and leaves the break
into three small leaflets can be seen. The most suitable climate for the alfalfa is
the warm and dry one. However, this plant is known to live under very hot
conditions such as droughts. This is because it has long roots that are able to
grow deeper into the soil in search of food and water.
The plant is a popular crop among farmers. It is a healthy food for horses
and cattle. It contains nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals. It also
5
helps to improve the fertility of the soil. A certain type of bacteria growing at the
roots of the plant have the ability to change nitrogen from the air into nitrates.
Nitrates remain in the soil even after the crops are gathered.
The alfalfas greatest enemies are grasshoppers. It gets infected easily
with plant diseases such as the bacterial wilt. This disease attacks the roots,
stems, and leaves. nce the plant is attacked, it soon shrinks and later dies.
