WHAT IS AN ACCELEROMETER?

An accelerometer is an instrument for measuring acceleration,
used for detecting and measuring vibrations. Accelerometers can also
be used to measure vibration on vehicles, machines, buildings,
process control systems and safety installations. They can also be
used to measure seismic activity, inclination, machine vibration,
dynamic distance and speed with or without the influence of
gravity.

HOW DOES AN ACCELEROMETER WORK?

Used for calculating acceleration and measuring
vibrations, the accelerometer is capable of
detecting even the slightest movements, from
the tilting of a building to the smallest vibration
caused by a musical instrument. Inside the
accelerometer minute sensor structures are
present which produces electrical charge if the
sensor experiences any movement.
Accelerometers need to be placed on the
surface of the object in order to determine the
vibrations. It is not capable of work in isolation or apart
from the object it is required to assess. It must
be firmly attached to the object in order to give
precise readings.

MOTION SENSING WORKSHOP
What do we do?

We try to make
machines with
character. So some
of the most
rewarding
moments for us are
when people
comment on their
cuteness or they
talk to them as if
they are little (live)
creatures.

Why do we do?

We desire to
spread awareness,
to let people see
that they can also
be crafty with
electronics. Then
they might not feel
as tempted to buy
something pre-
made.
Hacking and toys
are both getting a
bad rap. More than
70,000 websites
were hacked last
week through an
SQL injection
attack. And several
months ago,
Californias
attorney general
sued 20 companies
for making toys
that contained
unlawful
quantities of lead.

Applications:-

Activates lights or security cameras or
alarms when it detects infrared energy
close to it.

Automation lights that turn on/off when
people pass by or to control electronic
appliances.

WHAT IS PIR?

Passive InfraRed sensor
All objects emit what is known as black body radiation. It is
usually infrared radiation that is invisible to the human eye but
can be detected by electronic devices designed for such a purpose.
The term passive in this instance means that the PIR device does
not emit an infrared beam but merely passively accepts incoming
infrared radiation. Infra meaning below our ability to detect it
visually, and Red because this color represents the lowest
energy level that our eyes can sense before it becomes invisible.
Thus, infrared means below the energy level of the color red, and applies to many sources of
invisible energy.

HOW DOES PIR WORK?

It basically scans an area and then detects
movements inside it. When it does so, it sends a
low through the alarm pin (black wire). The
"Motion Sensing" feature on most lights (and
security systems) is a passive system that detects
infra-red energy. These sensors are therefore
known as PIR (passive infrared) detectors or
pyroelectric sensors. In order to make a sensor
that can detect a human being, you need to make
the sensor sensitive to the temperature of a
human body. Humans, having a skin temperature
of about 93 degrees Fahrenheit, radiate infrared
energy with a wavelength between 9 and 10 micrometers. Therefore, the sensors are typically
sensitive in the range of 8 to 12 micrometers.

PIR SENSOR

But what if you
combined hacking
and toys? The
result is a form of
creative
engineering that is
changing how
people view
electronics, giving
new life to same-
old products. Call
them mashups for
gadget fiends.

Hackers are
tweaking tech
gadgets legally
with creative
results.

Its a good educational exercise because it pushes people to think about what is
behind everyday objects instead of simply accepting them the way they appear.
