This piece consists of a slow sequence of 72 chords, gien on the two chord
sequence pages, which is interrupted seen times!
The chords are to "e pla#ed with the fingers $pluc%ed simultanousl#, not
strummed&, as quietl# as possi"le while still giing all four notes equal weight! The
pace is slow ' eer# chord should "e completel# allowed to die awa# "efore
moing on, and pauses ma# "e longer still!
The interruptions can occur wheneer the pla#er desires, "ut there must "e at
least one chord "etween each interruption!
The interruptions are of two t#pes( pluc%ed single notes and sustained tones! )ne
t#pe of interruption has four ariations and the other three! These ariations must
occur in the order indicated, "ut the two different t#pes of interruption need not
alwa#s alternate $though the# ma#&!
The first t#pe of interruption consists of single notes pluc%ed with a plectrum $see
the pluc%ed interruptions page&! The olume of all pitches should "e matched to
that of the quietest harmonic! *ll notes should oerlap as much as possi"le, "ut the
pla#er should also wait as long as possi"le "efore sounding the ne+t note, insofar
as this is compati"le with the requirement to oerlap! ,here oerlapping is not
possi"le, the note$s& should "e allowed to die awa# completel# "efore moing on!
The second t#pe of interruption consists of the - on the 13
th
fret
of the high . string pla#ed with an e"ow!
The first time this interruption occurs the sound
should "e as quiet and pure as possi"le!
The second time, the pla#er should periodicall# "egin gentl# whistling a tone that
almost matches the -, so that "eatings are generated! $These pitches
ma# "e different for each whistle, "ut do not glissando!&
The third time, the pla#er should stop the note "ac% from the
fret so that the string "u//es against it0 tr# to ma%e
the "u//ing as rich and consistent as possi"le!
.ach of these sustained1note interruptions is to last for a long time( long
enough that the memor# of the piece up to that point is almost forgotten,
The piece ma# end either with the final chord or with the conclusion of the final
interruption, depending on the choices the pla#er has made!
