Business Meeting

Meeting 796 12 Jun 14

Welcome:
Pres Paul welcomed everyone to meeting 796 and invited Chris Hunter to recite the
Charge to Australia and Anton to give the toast to Rotary International and the Rotary
Club of Wellington North.
Pres Paul welcomed our friend Vera, and two guests, Rebecca Whitehouse and Marie-
Clare Egan.

Apologies:
How simple is it sharing a house with the new Attendance Officer? Thanks Lizzie,
the following Rotarians offered their apologies, Cathy and Colin Hobbs, Glenn
Wahlert, Chilly Chilman, Bruce Miller and David Stevens who are on leave and of
course Lizzie!
Mind you I did get an email from our Yank, all the way from Yanky Land,
reminding me to order the meals, as Lizzie was going to be away this week.
Thanks Bruce, and yes, I have a very long memory!
Just in late apology from both Sue Jarvis and Lynne McPherson.
Jerraganda business:
From the Desk of the President:
Back from the Rotary International Conf Pres Paul couldn't say enough about it. He
advised that this has wetted his appetite for more though he has yet to decide
which country he will hold out for. Pres Paul met with the Wellington North Club
whilst in Sydney and finalised the friendship between the two clubs. Lionel is the
Pres and presented their club banner to us, but sadly the Pres forgot to take our
banners with him. It's in the mail!

Jerrabomberra
Combined Board Meeting: Pres advised that they had nice pizza and wine and brought much to
fruition so little is to be handed over to the new Board.

Board Reports: Please get all Report to the Pres by 16 Jun 14.

Disbursements: Pres Paul advised that the Board had already disbursed $14,000.00 during the year
and another $10,000.00 will be disbursed at next weeks meeting. Hopefully we will be able to get
the recipients to come along to accept their cheques.

We have also raised $11,000.00 from the car raffle and $150,000.00 from the MS Mega Swim .

Rotary International Convention: As earlier stated the Pres described the Convention as wonderful
and you really missed out if you didnt go. It was fantastic mixing with 18,000 Rotarians and
partners. There were some great speakers. The Club has acquired some videos from the event.
Paul Robey has a copy of the order of events. During the speeches there were some great videos
which will also be shared during the next rotary year.
Socially it was a great event and the new Club T-shirts were a hit.
Pres Paul advised that he has a few souvenirs which he would like to sell during Gen business.

Rotarians Wine Appreciation Fellowship: Pres gave a brief on the Wine Appreciation Chapter of
Rotary and put foot in mouth with the boys club comment. Club members of both genders are
welcome to sign up. Pres Paul was duly fined and will send out the info to ALL members via email.

Reports: International

Terry advised that the Tonga Trip could be in jeopardy due to Chillys mishap.
According to reports, Chilly went to Brissie for a rugby game, was stone cold
sober, (give David Bailey some water, he is choking) missed the step going into
the little boys room and face planted into the hand basin. 30 odd stitches later
and a couple of temporary teeth, Chilly is ok and will no doubt live to take his
Bromance trip to Tonga with Terry.
Close your eyes if you are squeamish!!!

Reports: Youth and New Generations

Youth Director's husband said Lynne sent her apology.
Youth Director's husband reported that Lynne interviewed William Hanson to
go forward to the next step for YEP. Lynne asked that her thanks be passed
onto Peter Jarvis for the outstanding assistance he has provided to her.

General Business:
Disbursement Night: David Bailey and his trusty assistant, (yet to be advised),
will organise the meal for next weeks meeting. BBQ and salads, the club will
pay for the meal. Attendance Officer needs to advise the Jerra Store that meals
will not be required for the next two weeks. It was also suggested that she
extends an invitation to the new owners to join us for a meal at next weeks
meeting.
Honorary Membership: Alex Alexanders membership has been extended for a further 12 months.
Robert Cooke's Honorary Membership will remain at 30 Nov 14.
Club's Charter: There was a debate with District in regards to the Clubs charter date. Pres Paul has
confirmed that the Charter date is 18 Nov 1988. District issued the Charter Certificate the week
following the Charter night and didnt backdate the Certificate.
Bendigo Bank: Treasurer advised that there are new arrangements for Bendigo bank for next year.
Board Member Job Descriptions: Pres Paul has advised that revised job descriptions have been
done and will be sent out to Directors.
Disbursements: Pres Paul asked if the Club wanted the breakdown of disbursements for next week.
Despite the majority consensus that we were good and could wait until next week, Pres Paul
droned on about who the disbursement would go to.
In total, disbursements this year will have come to $24, 400.00. This does not include the 175
th

Anniversary proceeds and the Renal Unit.
Call for Help: Ian Wholohan is helping the school build a "music storage room". As the project
continues, Ian may need some assistance from club members. The board has endorsed this project
as a club project for insurance purposes.
Another Call for Help: Jan Pettigrew advised that Sandra Robey (incoming first lady) is involved in a
project Girls for Girls, which aims to provide hygiene kits for girls in Africa. Jan asked that any club
members who plan to travel could collect the soaps and shampoos in their accommodation and
pass onto Sandra. It goes without saying that if you have any of these at home and would like to
donate, again please pass to Sandra.
Changeover Dinner: If you haven't advised Jan of your attendance at the Changeover dinner or paid
the Treasurer, please do so.
Resignation: Anne Davis has resigned WEF the beginning of Jul. WOW, what a lovely speech Anne
made. We will very much miss Anne and understand that you wish to get a little more into the coal
face. Anne asked that we keep her in mind if there are parties. We will organise parties just to
catch up Anne!!! And yes, we will all miss your delightful laugh.
Pres Paul thanked Anne for her time in the Club and all the assistance she has provided over the
years. In particular, the outstanding job Anne has done with the Rotary Rascals for the MS Mega
Swim. Anne has advised that she would like to continue with this role.
DG Visit: The DG will be visiting on 31 July 14 and will present the Rotary Moment.
Rotary Day: Sue Roger advised that she would like to film the club having a great day for Rotary
Day. The Australia Day BBQ maybe a good event to film. Mez suggested that David and his mates
might be able to help out with the filming.

End Polio Now Pins

the 3 Rotarians rostered on must be there by 6.30am.

Joker: Great joke from Mrs Hunter... even if she did
lose her momentum!
Yet another week of reprieve: Marie Clare drew the
winning ticket for Anne Davis, and wow there was a
bit of a gasp as Anne picked the card right next to
the joker being the 4 of spades. Woo Hoo!!!! And

Farmers Market Corner:

Market Musings:
Not a good result for Saturday, which some stall holders stated was one of the slowest days they have
experienced in a long while. Maybe it was the weather which was quite wet until mid-morning.
Market shoppers now seem mostly to have adjusted to the temporary traffic arrangements, although there
continues to be some traffic trying to exit against the one way flow arrangement. Nevertheless, from my
position at the information table, I could view much professional looking arm waving being performed by
our two capable traffic wardens, Ian and Jon.
Standing at the other gate, we were accompanied by a lady handing out brochures for a forthcoming
refugee protest march. This made it confusing for our meeting and greeting task for the market patrons,
who were being hailed by us and then handed a brochure by the refugee advocate. One unfortunate effect
of her presence was a long tirade of obscene abuse hurled at us by one very dissatisfied patron. Wish
Glenn was there to sort this fellow out! Jon suggested a solution is to stand on the opposite side of the gate
to more clearly differentiate our role. I think that the lady will be back again next week.
Thankyou, Paul!

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club
based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of
mentor (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on
18 November 1998 with 20 members. We are an unusual club as we have a very high proportion of female Members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in
numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years. We now meet at the
Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). As at 26 Jan 2014 the Club has 26 members
11 female and 15 male. Included in this are seven married couples. We also have 4 supporters of the Rotary Club.
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club bulletin and a design for the
Club banner. There were some good and (very) bad suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name;
Jerraganda. The banner design by David Stevens was eventually selected. The design incorporates a goose and the
windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate.
