GOETZE MECHANICAL FACE SEALS
INTRODUCTION
Heavy duty static and dynamic sealing technology is concerned with providing sealing solutions for machinery
applications in which conventional seals lack the required durability.
The drive mechanisms for tracked vehicles and construction machinery, or the power transmission equipment
for conveyor systems, sand conditioning plant, concrete and cement mixers, mining machinery and similar
heavy plant are subjected to extreme abrasive stresses in the environments in which they work.
Failures can severely disrupt operations, and repairs are very costly.
Our metallic mechanical face seals have served well in such arduous conditions for years.
Robust and efficient, they guarantee customers high serviceability, durability and maximum productivity of
their equipment.
On tracked vehicles it is vital to provide effective protection against abrasive media such as dust, sand, mud,
stones or earth for the bearings of the tread, support and guide rollers and for wheel or axle hubs.
Peripheral speeds of up to 10 m/sec can be effectively handled.
The frictional heat generated at the contact faces between the static and dynamic components of the seal
must be dissipated by ensuring adequate lubricant action.
The seal faces must be continuously lubricated in order to prevent pick up or galling.
Corrosion during stationery periods must be avoided.
Housings must be machined to recommended sizes and surface finished to ensure good static sealing.
Cleanliness must be ensured during assembly.
Seals can withstand up to 3bar.

INSTALLED CONDITION

TYPE 76.90H / 76.97H
DESCRIPTION
76.97H and 76.90H are the standard designs, there are no fundamental differences between them and both are
fully interchangeable. Whereas the outer profile of type 76.90H is ground, this is not the case with type 76.97H
which is left as cast giving it the benefit of even better torque transmissions.
METHOD OF OPERATION
The resilience of the O-ring acts in a number of ways:
The seal faces of the metallic rings are lapped to a radial width of about
2.5 mm and are therefore finely tuned to one another from early life.
The rings are designed in such a way that they open out from the seal
faces towards the centre axis, forming a wedge-shaped gap which has the following benefits:
the lubricant is readily admitted to the seal faces by capillary action and centrifugal force
adequate lubrication and cooling are assured and potential cold welding of the seal faces is avoided
as wear increases, the sealing face graduates towards the centre axis; the seal therefore has large wear
reserves which virtually only end when the inside diameter is reached
the traces of lubricant visible at the outer gap indicate that the seal is working perfectly.
ADAPTER RINGS TYPE 76.91

In some sealing applications housing designs are restricted and it
is not possible to produce the housing profile required for types
76.90H and 76.97H.
In such cases adapter rings type 76.91H can be fitted into a simple
cylindrical bore. They provide the ideal housing profile to enable
standard seals to be fitted.
The adapter rings are available in two forms, A and B, and are
constructed of deep drawn sheet metal casings sheathed in an
oil-resistant elastomeric material. The rubberlike, ribbed profile of
the outer surface ensures static sealing and transmission of torque.

it exerts an axial load on the metallic sealing faces

transmits the frictional torque to the housing components
and provides a static seal between each seal ring and its housing bore.
LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE

OIL
There is no doubt that the seal has far greater scope of operation with good lubricating and heat dissipating qualities
when oil is used, as opposed to grease.
Transmission oils, grade SAE 80 and SAE 90, have proved particularly suitable. If necessary, lower viscosity
lubricants like engine oil 20 W 20 can also be used. In cases where hydraulic fluids are to be used, please contact us.
The oil level after filling should be between the axis centreline and 2/3 of the seal diameter.
When filled to the correct level, the oil will generally suffice for the lifetime of the seal. The sealed joint
requires no maintenance.
Grease may nevertheless be considered for lifetime lubrication, but only up to vmax = 3 m/s.
The seal should on no account be regreased with a grease gun, as the high pressure of the gun can
dislodge the O-rings and ultimately destroy them.
Neither is it possible to grease the seal faces, because the seal rings close up as pressure builds internally.
SPECIFICATION OF SETTING GAP A

Mechanical face seal type 76.90H / 76.97H is designed such that the setting-up clearance A (Fig. X, page XX)
of 3 +/- 0.5mm will be adequate for the majority of applications (please note special sizes). This dimension
determines both the installed position of the seal rings and the compression of the O-rings, i.e the optimum
axial load.
The standard clearance of 3 +/- 0.5mm must be adjusted for applications in which the continuous peripheral
speed is between 4 and 10 m/s, in order to prevent excessive loading of the lubricating oil. This can be done
by reducing the specific surface pressure at the seal faces by selectively enlarging the clearance A.
Guide values for enlargement of the setting-up clearance A are shown in the following chart.

must also be adjusted when
using O-rings with a hardness
greater than 60 Shore A. In

Lubrication with grease should be avoided wherever possible, as grease fails to create hydrodynamic
lubricating conditions in the seal gaps. The result is higher wear and shorter life.
GREASE
INSTALLATION GUIDE
Mechanical face seals type 76.90H are precision components made of chilled cast iron. Therefore sharp blows
and knocks should be avoided.
1. Keep the seal in the original packaging until just before installation. Once unpacked, be especially
careful to protect the fine-finished seal faces of the metallic rings and the elastomeric rings from
damage and contamination.
2. The seal housing (a) must be clean and free from machining debris and all edges of the housing bore
must be radiused.
3. Install the seal using the special tool (b) and applying pressure directly on the elastomeric ring.
For easier assembly, moisten the bore and elastomeric ring with white spirit - not oil or similar
lubricating fluids.
4. Press the seal ring into the housing like a snap fastener. Ensure that afterwards the housing face G is
parallel to the seal face D. The O-rings must not undulate in the housing bore or kink and bulge out of
the bore.
5. Before tensioning the seal rings to the setting-up clearance, clean the seal faces and apply a film of oil,
preferably with an oil-soaked chamois leather cloth.
6. Ensure the clearance between the seal ring housing bores is as specified (see Fig. XX).
7. Whether the seal halves should be installed before inserting any adapter rings will be dictated by the
constructional design and must be decided by the customer.
If the seal set is taken apart in the course of repairs, a new set will have to be installed even if the wear limit is
not yet reached. The mating faces will have run in on a common line after a relatively short time, and there is
no certainly of re-assembling them in exactly the same position. the wear paths of the seal faces would no
longer match, and unacceptable leakage would occur until the faces had run in again.
