Functional Description
CHANNEL UNIT E&M/VF-P
2.1 Channel Block
The channel block provides a voice frequency and signalling interface
between the analog signalling equipment and the DYNACARD-bus.
2.1.1 Speech Channel
The analog interface is either a two-wire interface from connector Pa1/
Pb1 or a four-wire interface with the output direction connected to pins
Pa2/Pb2 and the input direction to pins Pa1/Pb1. The connection is
selected by means of a software controlled switch.
The analog interface is connected to a VF-hybrid via isolation trans
formers. The hybridincludes impedancematchingcircuitry andtheselec
tion switches for two-wire or four-wire connection. The transient volt
age suppression of the interface is sufficient for indoor installations.
The CODEC (enCOder-DECoder) circuit performs the A/D and D/A
conversions betweenthe voice frequency andPCMsignals. Controlledby
the microprocessor of the control block, the CODEC circuit can confi
gurethe level settings andthe two-wire balance impedance for the chan
nel.
Each separate channel of the unit can be set into use or out of use. All
channel settings are retained when the channels are out of use.
2.1.2 Signalling
There are two E and M signalling channels for each speech channel.
The M-wire signalling receiver is a ground detector. The output of the
circuit is connected to the sensing circuits of the control block.
The E-wire signalling transmitter is a ground switch. The control of the
circuit is passed from the control block through the internal bus and a
latch in the Codec circuit.
A third one-way signalling channel is also available. It can be set into E
or M state.
Alternatively, the third signalling bit can be used to set the analog inter
face either into two-wire or four-wire state by an external signal (Msig
nal). The selection is done via the service interface.

CHANNEL UNIT E&M/VF-P
2.2 Control Block
The control block controls the unit's internal functions. It communicates
through the DYNACARD-bus with the bus master unit (DYNA
CARD-MUX) which is connected to the PCM channel and to the ser
vice interface (e.g. Service Terminal).
Commands fromthe bus master and the service interface are interpreted
by the unit's processor and used to configure and control the channel cir
cuits.
The control block performs the following functions:
h Configuration of channel circuits for time slot allocation, 2/4-wire
interface mode, balance impedance and level settings, etc.
h Processing of incoming and outgoing time slot TS16 signalling
information.
h Monitoring of alarm conditions, such as power supply failure, chan
nel blocking etc, and indication of alarms using the service LEDs.
The control circuits are run by software contained in a replaceable Read
Only Memory (ROM) circuit.
2.3 Power Supply
The channel unit is equipped with a unit-specific power supply. The
switching mode power supply generates the +5 V and -5 V voltages
requiredby theunit as well as the-12Vvoltagefor theMsignalling, from
the central battery voltage (-20...-72 V).

3 ADJUSTMENTS AND SETTINGS
All adjustments required when commissioning the equipment are per
formed through the service interface.
The following parameters are set for each channel or alternatively for all
channels of the unit:
h Time slot (or the time slot of the first channel)
h Channel use
h Levels of transmitted and received speech signals
h Signalling logic
h For two-wire connection, the settings of the balance impedance

1 INTRODUCTION
This document describes the hardware requirements and installation
procedures for the unit. When the hardware has been successfully
installed, the software may be configured according to the instructions
given in the Operation section of this handbook. The section Operation
with Service Terminal may also be of use when configuring and maintain
ing the software.
The unit is an unencased component board whose height is 6 Uand width
5T. The unit canbe installedinany TM4 cartridgewithaDYNACARD-
MUX unit. The same cartridge can also house other kinds of channel
units, and the units can be installed in any unit locations.
The equipment is ready to operate when it has been installed into a car
tridge and the signal cables have been connected. All settings are per
formed by the Service Terminal; no strappings are required.

2 POWER SUPPLY AND MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
2.1 General
The unit can be installed into any TM4 cartridge system, or 19"rack/sub
rack, inany unit location. The physical dimensions of the unit are 6 Uhigh
by 5 T wide.
This document covers the following units:
h Channel Unit E&M/VF-P, 8 channels (TU 21236.01)
The unit includes 8 VF-channels and2 (3) E&Msignalling channels
for each VF-channel.
Anormal DM2primary multiplexer setupwouldcontainaMUXunit and
4 E&Mchannel units TU21236.01. Other kinds of channel units may also
be used in the same setup as the E&Munit. If different channel units with
different signalling systems are used in the same equipment setup, their
power supply and groundings should be carefully checked.
Standard anti-static precautions (such as a wrist strap earthed to the
rack) should be taken when handling the unit, as it contains components
which may be damaged by static discharge.
Power supplyconfigurationshouldbecarriedout andcheckedthoroughly
before units are installed into a rack. It is possible to cause damage to the
unit if the setup is not correctly configured.

CHANNEL UNIT E&M/VF-P
2.2 Power Supply Requirements
The unit requires battery voltage, and auxiliary +5 V supplies from the
rack, which are delivered to the unit via the back connector, PB1 (see Fig
ure 1). These supplies are delivered to the rack by the rack power adaptor
unit (Power Interface Adaptor, PIA, or Power Supply Adaptor, PSA,
depending on the rack type).
Abuilt-inDC/DCconverter generates theunit's internal supply voltages
from the battery voltage (VPB/VNB). The battery voltage may be in the
range of -20...-72 V and can be floating with respect to ground.
The auxiliary +5 V supply (VAP5) is used for providing an alarm signal
uponinternal power supply failure in the unit. This supply is generated in
the PIA/PSA unit.
Ground for the unit is connected to the rack (via the back connector).
Another external +5 V supply (VP5) from the motherboard is also used
by the unit. This voltage is generated in the MUX unit, and is used for
driving bus interface circuitry.
The unit also enables the supervision and measurement of the criterion
voltage (B1). This feature can be used for battery voltage control. Other
wise the B1 voltage does not need to be connected. Note that the battery
voltage control is not available when a floating power supply is used.

2.3 Rack Setups
Figure 2 shows a typical cartridge into which a DM 2 multiplexer may be
installed. Various cartridges are available, depending upon the mechan
ical rack systemused for the installation. Typically a TM4 rack (including
the 12" rack unit) may have cartridges with 2, 4, or 8 unit locations on a
commonmotherboard; and a 19" subrack cartridge will have 16 unit loca
tions on its motherboard (which may be subdivided into up to 4 sections).
Refer to the relevant rack or cartridge manual for more details.

front edge of the unit, see Figure 3 and Figure 4.
Suitable cable types are:
MMHS 8 x 4 x 0.4 + 0.4 2 pieces/8 channels
MMHS 16 x 4 x 0.4 + 4 x 0.4 4 pieces/30 channels
Connector:
16 + 32 -pin Euroconnectors 2 pieces/unit
The transient voltage suppression of the channels is sufficient for indoor
installations. When connected to an outdoor cable, a primary protection
device must be used.
3.1 Cabling Example
Acabling example of TU21236.01 is shown in Table 1 and Table 2. Two 16
x 4 cables are usedfor speechandtwofor E&Msignals. The channel units
are installed in unit locations 2 to 5.
The voice frequency four-wire inputs are connected into c- and d-
wires and the outputs into a- and b- wires of the cable (Table 1).
The E1-signalling is connected into b-wire, E2 into a-wire, M1 into
d-wire, and M2 into c-wire of the cable (Table 2). The cabling principle
is shown in Figure 4.

CHANNEL UNIT E&M/VF-P
1 INTRODUCTION
This manual describes the procedures for commissioning, day to day
operation, and maintenance of the channel unit.
All software configurable parameters for the unit are accessedvia the ser
vice interface of the controlling DYNACARD-MUX unit. The service
interface can be used locally by connecting a Service Terminal to the
DYNACARD-MUX, or remotely by a Transmission Management
Computer (TMC). This document is written assuming that a Service Ter
minal is used(althoughthe menustructure is exactly the same whenusing
a TMC).
Remote access to the DYNACARD-MUX service interface may be
gained by connecting several service interfaces together into a bus, and
the buses further into service channels to form a service network. All
equipment on this network can be controlled from one central point,
using either a Service Terminal, or a TMC (see Transmission Manage
ment System TMS, Operating Handbook).
The DYNACARD-MUX unit provides the menus related to the com
monparts of theequipment, andthechannel unit provides menus relating
to its own operation. Option 9 of the top level DYNACARD-MUX
menus always provides access tothe unit specific menus, by promptingfor
a unit location number. This number is the physical location of the unit in
the equipment cartridge. Locations are numbered from left to right,
where the leftmost location is location number 1 (usually occupied by the
DYNACARD-MUXunit).
A description of the full channel unit menu structure is found in the sec
tionOperationwithService Terminal. It is recommendedthat theuser refer
to that document whilst performing the operations described below.
This document covers the following units and corresponding programs:
h Channel Unit E&M/VF-P, 8 channels
(TU 21236.01, Program TS 25360.01)
The unit includes 8 VF-channels and2 (3) E&Msignalling channels
for each VF-channel.

2 COMMISSIONING
2.1 General
The steps necessary for commissioning a channel unit for normal oper
ation in a DM2 system(as an example) are described below. This section
deals only with the software configurable parameters; any necessary
hardware configuration should be carried out prior to the software con
figuration. Refer to the section Installation for details of the hardware
setup necessary for correct functioning of the unit.
2.2 Installation Procedure
The term'installation' is used to describe the process of a MUXunit giv
ing permission to a channel unit to start operation, and involves the
transfer of configuration information around the DM 2 system.
A unit (MUX or channel unit) has an on-board non-volatile memory
that is used for storing both its own configuration, and a back-up copy of
the configuration of the next unit in the cartridge.
The MUX keeps a list of which locations in the cartridge have units
installed in them. This list is by location number (referred to as 'u', or unit
number), rather than unit ID, which allows for the immediate replace
ment of a damaged card. When a new unit is inserted into a location that
previously contained an installed unit, the MUXautomatically copies the
back-up configuration of the old unit to the new unit, and immediately
gives the new unit permission to start operating.
Units are installed using the Add unit command (6,2,1,u to install a single
unit at location u), or the Install all units command (6,2,3 to install all
units in a cartridge). Units may be deinstalled using the Remove unit
command (6,2,2,u to deinstall a single unit at location u).
If the user requests the installation of a unit which is already in the
installed state, then its current configuration is copied to the next unit in
the cartridge. This allows the configuration back-up of the unit to be
kept up-to-date if changes are made to its settings.
Installing an already installed unit should only be done when all of its
channels are idle, as the installation process will terminate any calls that
are currently in progress.
If installation is requested for a unit that is not in the installed state, then
its current configuration is backed up (as above), it is given permission by
theMUXtostart operating, andits locationnumber is addedtotheMUX
list as containing an installed unit.

3 START-UP OF THE CHANNEL UNIT
1. Place the channel unit, the DYNACARD-MUX (DM 2, DB 2, or
DN2) andtheother units, if any, intotheDM2, DB2, or DN2equip
ment cartridge.
2. Connect the Service Terminal to the service interface connector of
the DYNACARD-MUX and establish a connection to the equip
ment (connection cables unconnected):

The green LED is lit to indicate that a connection from the Service
Terminal to the equipment has been established.
3. Perform equipment installation by installing all units:

If a new channel unit is added to a partially complete system (which is,
however, currently in use), the unit should be configured and then in
stalled using the Add unit command (6,2,1,u) rather than the Install all
units command (6,2,3), as this will halt the progress of any calls currently
present on the existing units.

4 SETTINGS
When a channel unit is used in a newDM2 systemits parameters cannot
be restored fromthe unit next to it, and so it must have all of its configur
ation parameters set as required before it can be used.
Commissioning the unit requires the following parameters to be set.
Many of the parameters are channel-specific, and many have default
(factory set) values which may already be acceptable to the user.
h Time slot allocation
h Interface levels
h Two-wire or four-wire connection
h Enable or disable detection and line code filtering
h Inverted/non-inverted mode or fixed values of signalling
h Enable or disable supervision of voltages
h Channel use (ON/OFF)
h Setting of two-wire balance impedance
Unit settings
Service Terminal selection 6,9,u,0 displays all unit settings.
Default settings (6,9,u,1)
The default settings provide all the channels of the unit withthe following
settings:
h All channels are connected to four-wire mode
h Four-wire level -4.0 dBr in Rx-direction and +9.0 dBr in Tx-
direction on all channels
h Two-wire level -7.0 dBr in Rx-direction and 0.0 dBr in Tx-direc
tion on all channels
h Group 1 (600 ohm) is set as the balance impedance of the two-wire
connection.
Channel use (6,9,u,3,1)
Default: OFF
Each channel separately or all channels of the unit can be controlled into
power-up (ON) or power-down (OFF) state which retain all settings.
By Service Terminal selection 6,9,u,3,1,ch,0 the state of each channel
(ch) of the unit (u) is displayed. For example, +9 implies that the channel
is installed and uses time slot 9. Correspondingly, -9 implies that the
channel is not installed, andq9, again, implies that the channel is being set
into use or out of use.

2/4-wire connection (6,9,u,3,2)
Default: four-wire
The two-or four-wire connection is selected either separately for each
channel or for all channels.
The two-or four-wire mode canalsobe selectedby using the additional
'E or M' signalling interface (6,9,u,3,6,ch,8). Note that this selection will
override the mode setting made by command6,9,u,3,2. For more detailed
information see Operation with Service Terminal.
Interface levels (6,9,u,3,3)
Default: four-wire -4.0 dBr Rx; +9.0 dBr Tx
two-wire -7.0 dBr Rx; 0.0 dBr Tx
The interface levels can be set either for all channels or for each channel
separately. The two-wire and four-wire levels must be set separately.
Polarity of signalling (6,9,u,8)
Default: normal, bits cd are set to 01
The logic canbe set toinvertedor non-inverted(normal), andthe values
of bits c and d can be set through the Service Terminal menu. The normal
mode is recommended by the manufacturer.
Setting of two-wire balance impedance (6,9,u,3,5)
Default: 600 W
The balance compensation circuit corresponds to the physical balance
impedance. It is set toa suitable value for the loopback test circuit. Oneof
the ten pre-computed impedances can be selected by a Service Ter
minal. The compensation circuit for the desired impedance is computed
by the manufacturer.

5 MAINTENANCE
The equipment does not require scheduledmaintenance. Maintenance is
needed only when the equipment indicates a fault by means of an alarm.
Accurate data concerning the equipment state and the nature of the fault
are obtained via the Service Terminal.
Additional data on the condition of the equipment and the signal quality
are obtained from the measurements made by the equipment itself.
Measurement results are read with the Service Terminal.
Also tests and loopbacks possibly required in fault location can be per
formed using the Service Terminal.

Interpretation of alarms at equipment level
When the red service LED is lit, there is a serious fault in the equipment
and the equipment usually has to be replaced by a new one. The red ser
vice LED, red rack alarmlamp and programmable alarmoutput PA1 are
activated by means of an external auxiliary voltage.
When the yellow service LED is lit, the fault is usually in the signal
received by the equipment. The alarm can also be caused by some con
trolled service function performed in the equipment (e.g. loopback or
forced indication). The alarming equipment itself is not necessarily
faulty; the fault may be in the far-end equipment or signal cabling.
The green service LEDis lit when the equipment is connected to the Ser
vice Terminal or the Transmission Management Computer. Connection
to the TMC does not activate the green LED in all cases.
Interpretation of alarms at unit level
The redservice LEDis switchedonby a serious fault intheunit. Notethat
inthe case of a power supply fault the redLEDis lit, eventhoughthe fault
itself may be outside the unit.
The yellow service LED is switched on by a fault in the equipment.
The green service LED is switched on when transmission management
actions concerning the unit take place through the Service Terminal con
nected to the DYNACARD-MUX.

Table 1 Indication of fault conditions
5.3 Fault Location
In fault conditions, an alarm is sometimes received simultaneously from
several sets of equipment. This is due tothe fact that the effect of the fault
spreads along the signal path with the faulty signal. Usually, however, the
set of equipment that has detected a fault transmits the AIS whereupon
the other sets do not alarm but indicate the AIS.
If it is not possible tolocatethefault onthebasis of thefault dataprovided
by the alarms and the Service Terminal, the use of equipment and inter
face loopbacks, testing of the internal signal path of the equipment, and
the read memory function can be of help.
Loopbacks and signal path tests cut off the traffic. Unless the loopbacks
are cancelled, they stay in effect until the time-out set for controls has
elapsed.

5.4 Test Controls
To help with fault location on the digital signal paths, channels in the unit
canbe put intoone of the twoloopbackstates. These are loopbacks onthe
analog side of the CODECcircuit, or loopbacks on the digital side of the
CODEC(D/A-A/Dor D-Dloops respectively). Bothtypes of loopback
produce loops at the digital signal interface. The controls for these loops
are in menu option 5,9,u,2,ch.
The loop on the digital side (D-Dloop) connects the signal directly from
the CODEC circuits digital input to digital output.
The loop on analog side (D/A-A/D loop) connects the analog output of
the CODEC to the analog input. The level measured at the digital signal
output interface depends on the level settings. The level in four-wire
mode is (Po - Pi + 4.8) dB and in two-wire mode (Po - Pi + 2.7) dB,
where Po is the output level and Pi the input level of analog interface.
The operation of the service LEDs can be checked using the forced
indication controls, 5,9,u,3.
The test control states describedabove operate ona timedbasis. Atime-
out period is set in menu option 6,9,u,6,1. After this selection, the above
controls will continue to operate until cancelled or until the time-out
period expires. If the time-out period is set to 65535, time-out will
never occur.

6 MEASUREMENTS
6.1 Signalling
Some of the unit measurements that canbe performedby the Service Ter
minal may help in locating failures in the signalling operation. Use of the
criterion table and signalling program block diagram (SDL Diagram) is
recommended.
Unit measurement: Service Terminal menu:
h Line code 7,9,u,2
h State of signalling:
h Mnemonic 7,9,u,3,1
h All states 7,9,u,3,2
h Detection 7,9,u,4
By using this information the flowof the signalling programcan be moni
tored and the cause of the fault state can be found.
Continuous display, example: 7,9,u,2,INV AUTO
This option displays the line code information continuously. To get back
tothe normal display mode push the TOPbuttononthe Service Terminal
twice.
6.2 Performance Measurements
Since the equipment itself collects data on signal quality and error occur
rences and indicates faults by alarms, only a few performance measure
ments carried out with separate measuring instruments should be
required. However, measurements can be performed if desired.
The operating voltages can be measured and the result read with the Ser
vice Terminal. If the operating voltages deviate from the recommended
values, it is advisable to have the equipment checked. The allowable
rangeof voltagevariations is 5%for the-5Vand10%for the-12V.

6.2.1 Voice Frequency Channels
The voice frequency characteristics of the channels are featured in the
Functional Description.
The voice frequency characteristics can be measured by connecting the
VFmeasuring equipment to the unit front connector. The measurements
canbedoneintheD->AandA->Ddirections separately by usingthe
DYNACARD-MUX and a PCM generator/receiver as shown in Fig
ure2.
By connecting a loop in the multiplex unit's PCMside A->Ameasure
ments canbe done using only VFmeasuring equipment. The channel unit
must be in four-wire mode, see Figure 3.

3 4-w receive
4 4-w transmit
This function allows for fine tuning of the receive and transmit levels (see
6,9,u,3,3and 6,9,u,3,4) to 0.1 dBresolution. An offset value in the range
+0.4...-0.4 dB (0.1 dB resolution) is prompted for:
Give difference of level (dB)?
If the user enters a value which is outside the range, the unit will display
the following error message:
