Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Bailey Gilbert Date: June 14, 2014

Grade and Topic: Third Grade: Reading Length of Lesson: 1 Hour
School: Highland Oaks Elementary

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
Identify and create cause and effect relationships

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Students will read sentence stems and identify a cause/effect relationship; in
partners, students will then create either a cause or effect for the missing half of
the sentence stems provided; student will then illustrate relationship using pictures
from the Internet or ClipArt Gallery in a PowerPoint presentation
Student must score 8-10 on assessment student rubric to achieve mastery.
Using PowerPoint, students will select pictures on the Internet to represent
original cause and effect relationships they have created

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
SPI 0301.5.3 Identify stated cause-effect relationships in text
RI 8 Describe logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a
text (e.g., comparison, cause/effect, first/second/third in a sequence).
Creativity and innovation
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Sarahs mom warned her about jumping from her dresser onto her bed. However, Sarah
loved doing it and on one of her last jumps before leaving for soccer practice, she landed
wrong and ended up breaking her ankle. Sarah had to miss her entire soccer season
simply because she didnt listen to her mother. Do you think Sarahs mom was trying to
eliminate Sarah from having fun? Or do you think her mom saw an effect that could
happen from being unsafe? Constantly we face decisions that have either good results or
bad consequences. Learning how to create and predict cause and effect relationships will
help you throughout your entire life.

MATERIALS:
Microsoft PowerPoint
Internet Web Browser
MS ClipArt Gallery

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will create cause and effect relationships and use images to illustrate
them
Identifying cause and effect relationships will help make connections throughout
texts they will read and also aid in wise decision making

the rest for students before they go to the computer.

Before the Computer (Ten Minutes)
1. Students will sit on carpet when they enter the computer lab.
2. Students will do warm-up activity with me.
3. Students will listen to instructions and watch demonstration on
overhead board. Students will watch how to navigate the Internet
to the search bar to search for images. Students will learn how to

overheard projector for their student presentations.

After Computer and Closure (Fifteen Minutes)
1. Students will gather back on carpet in circle and will volunteer
to share their PowerPoint.
2. Students will spread around the room and complete Think
Sheet.
3. Remaining Power Points and Think Sheets will be shared and
completed at the start of the next class period.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Student must score an 8-10 for mastery on the student
assessment rubric.

MODIFICATIONS:
Students who need modifications will work with a pre-paired group on the
activity.

THINK SHEET Questions

1. Looking at the sentences you created, does the cause in your
cause/effect relationships always come at the beginning of the
sentence?
-Write a sentence where the cause comes at the beginning, then
another where the cause is at the end of a sentence.

2. How could you explain classroom rules to a new kindergartner using
cause and effect relationships that would help them want to follow the
rules?

3. List five effects of not doing your homework or trying your best at
school.
