LESSON OBJECTIVE: Students will read sentence stems and identify a cause/effect relationship; in partners, students will then create either a cause or effect for the missing half of the sentence stems provided; student will then illustrate relationship using pictures from the Internet or ClipArt Gallery in a PowerPoint presentation Student must score 8-10 on assessment student rubric to achieve mastery. Using PowerPoint, students will select pictures on the Internet to represent original cause and effect relationships they have created

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Sarahs mom warned her about jumping from her dresser onto her bed. However, Sarah loved doing it and on one of her last jumps before leaving for soccer practice, she landed wrong and ended up breaking her ankle. Sarah had to miss her entire soccer season simply because she didnt listen to her mother. Do you think Sarahs mom was trying to eliminate Sarah from having fun? Or do you think her mom saw an effect that could happen from being unsafe? Constantly we face decisions that have either good results or bad consequences. Learning how to create and predict cause and effect relationships will help you throughout your entire life.
MATERIALS: Microsoft PowerPoint Internet Web Browser MS ClipArt Gallery
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: Students will create cause and effect relationships and use images to illustrate them Identifying cause and effect relationships will help make connections throughout texts they will read and also aid in wise decision making
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: As a class, we will watch a mini-lesson from Brain-Pop Jr. on Cause and Effect. (http://www.brainpopjr.com/readingandwriting/comprehension/causeandeffect) I will then pull up the sentence stems, do the example as a class, and read through the rest for students before they go to the computer.
Procedures: Before the Computer (Ten Minutes) 1. Students will sit on carpet when they enter the computer lab. 2. Students will do warm-up activity with me. 3. Students will listen to instructions and watch demonstration on overhead board. Students will watch how to navigate the Internet to the search bar to search for images. Students will learn how to create a PowerPoint and how to illustrate their sentences. Students will learn how to copy and paste images from the Internet into their PowerPoint presentation.

Illustrate cause and effect in pictures on slides in PowerPoint 4. Students will watch as together we create the same title page for reference of how I want their slides to be organized with pictures, I will tell them where to put their original typed sentences. Students will go to the computers with their pre-assigned partners. 5. Student stem sentences will be left up on overhead board for reference.
At the Computer (Thirty-Five Minutes) 1. Students will open Internet Browser. 2. Students will open Microsoft PowerPoint. 3. Students will reference sentence stems on board and begin to create original sentences. 4. Students will continue to make illustrated slides based on each sentence stem. 5. Once finished, students will save work and raise hand. 6. I will email their complete PowerPoint to myself to put on the overheard projector for their student presentations.
After Computer and Closure (Fifteen Minutes) 1. Students will gather back on carpet in circle and will volunteer to share their PowerPoint. 2. Students will spread around the room and complete Think Sheet. 3. Remaining Power Points and Think Sheets will be shared and completed at the start of the next class period.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Student must score an 8-10 for mastery on the student assessment rubric.
MODIFICATIONS: Students who need modifications will work with a pre-paired group on the activity.
