Introdu tion

CIDMA Center for Resear h and Development in Mathemati s and Appli ations (University of Aveiro, Portugal) will host the Third Wiener-Hopf Workshop on 2324 June, 2014.
The event is organized in ollaboration with Department of Mathemati s and Physi s of
Aberystwyth University and ba ked by the FP7 EU proje t PARM-2. It is follow up to
the previous su essful Wiener-Hopf Workshops held in 2010 and 2012 (more details on the
previous Workshops an be found at http://fp7.imaps.aber.a .uk/ onf_wh.html ).
The s ienti topi s of the workshop are based on the method originally introdu ed by
Norbert Wiener and Eberhard Hopf but also in all its onsequen es and s ienti asso iations. Thus, having in mind the Wiener-Hopf Te hnique and its appli ations, a onsequent
broad range of topi s from both the pure mathemati al and applied viewpoints is wel ome.
Examples of this are:
- Wiener-Hopf like operators and equations;
- Wiener-Hopf fa torization;
- Related boundary value problems;
- Riemann-Hilbert problems;
- Appli ations whi h involve the Wiener-Hopf te hnique.

Maximal and minimal fun tions in model spa es

M. Cristina Cmara
IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal
e-mail: amaramath.te ni o.ulisboa.pt
We study model spa es, regarded as kernels of Toeplitz operators (T -kernels) in a Hardy
spa e Hp , fo using in parti ular on their relation with the notion of a minimal T -kernel,
and we introdu e and des ribe maximal and minimal fun tions in those spa es. This talk
is based on joint work with M. T. Malheiro and J. R. Partington.

Eliminating zero from the numeri al range through multipli ation by operators
from a given set
Cristina Diogo
ISCTE Instituto Universitrio de Lisboa, Portugal
e-mail: ristina.diogois te.pt
Let H be a separable omplex Hilbert spa e and B(H) be the Bana h algebra of all bounded
linear operators on H . In this talk we will dis uss for whi h operators A in B(H) with 0 in
the losure of its numeri al range, 0 an be removed from it by multiplying A by operators
from a given set. Some parti ular sets of operators will be onsidered, as for instan e, the
set of positive operators, the set of self adjoint operators and the set of operators with zero
in the losure of the numeri al range.

Mellin onvolution equations in Bessel potential spa es

Roland Dudu hava
A. Razmadze Mathemati al Institute, Tbilisi State University, Georgia
e-mail: RolDudgmail. om
A lass of Mellin onvolution equations with meromorphi kernels is introdu ed and proved
that the orresponding operators are bounded in the Bessel potential spa es Hsp (Rn ) for all
1 < p < , < s < . Su h equations we en ounter in boundary value problems for
4

ellipti equations in planar 2D domains with angular points on the boundary as a model
e s (R+ )
problem after lo alization and have to study in the Bessel potential spa e setting H
p
s
+
Hp (R ). The main purpose was to derive Fredhol property of su h equations. For this we
have investigated ommutants of Mellin onvolution and Bessel potential operators. It is
shown that Bessel potentials alter essentially after ommutation with Mellin onvolutions
depending on the poles of the kernel. After lifting Mellin onvolutions from Bessel potential
spa es to the Lp (R+ ) Lsp (R+ )-setting we get operators whi h belong to the algebra Ap
generated by Mellin onvolution and Fourier onvolution (Wiener-Hopf) operators in the
Lebesgue spa e Lp . By applying results on su h algebras, obtained by the author in 1970's
and 1980's the Fredholm riteria for the mentioned operators in the Bessel potential spa es
is found and the index formula for su h operators is written.
The obtained results are already applied to the study of a mixed type boundary value
problem for the Helmholtz equations in angular domains (joint resear h with M. Caava).
We plan to apply the obtained results to some other BVPs for other dierential equations,
for example Lam equation in omposite domains with angular points.

Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators in wave dira tion problems with a s reen
intera ted with a boundary
David Kapanadze
A. Razmadze Mathemati al Institute, Tbilisi State University, Georgia
e-mail: david.kapanadzegmail. om
In this talk, we present re ent results from the joint works with Lus Castro from the
University of Aveiro. We study matrix WienerHopf plus and minus Hankel operators arising
in wave dira tion problems with a s reen intera ted with a boundary. The investigation is
mostly based on the onstru tion of expli it operator relations and a fa torization te hnique
for a ertain lass of os illating Fourier symbols.

Fredholmness and index of simplest weighted singular integral operators with

two slowly os illating shifts
Alexei Karlovi h
New University of Lisbon, Portugal
e-mail: oykf t.unl.pt
We onsider weighted singular integral operators, whose oe ients are pure isometri shift
operators. We prove that su h operators are Fredholm and their indi es are equal to zero on
the Lebesgue spa es of the positive half-line under the mild assumption that the derivatives
of the shifts slowly os illate at zero and at innity. This result extends an earlier result by
the speaker, Yuri Karlovi h, and Amarino Lebre for non-weighted singular integral operators
with two slowly os illating shifts.

Commutators of onvolution type operators on weighted Lebesgue spa es and

their appli ations
Yuri Karlovi h
Universidad Autnoma del Estado de Morelos, Mxi o
e-mail: karlovi huaem.mx
We study the ompa tness of ommutators of multipli ation operators and onvolution operators on weighted Lebesgue spa es with Mu kenhoupt weights. Applying results on ommutators of pseudodierential operators with non-regular symbols, we study the ompa tness
of ommutators mentioned above for several sub lasses of dis ontinuous and os illating data
fun tions. Appli ations to Bana h algebras of Wiener-Hopf operators are onsidered.

Approximate fa torisation of the DanieleKhrapkov matri es

Anastasia Kisil
University of Cambridge, UK
e-mail: ak528 am.a .uk
This talk will be on the stability of s alar and matrix WienerHopf fa torisation. In
parti ular approximate s alar WienerHopf fa torisation and rational approximation will
be overed. This will be used in results about the stability of the DanieleKhrapkov
matri es. The results will be applied to Abrahams' method of avoiding the exponential
growth in the DanieleKhrapkov fa tors.

Covariant spe trum of Toeplitz operators

Vladimir V. Kisil
University of Leeds, UK
e-mail: kisilvmaths.leeds.a .uk
The group G = SL2 (R) onsists of 22 matri es with real entries and the unit determinant.
Let H be a Hilbert spa e, for a bounded linear operator T on H and a ve tor v H we
dene the fun t ion on SL2 (R) by

a b
1
1
c(g) = (cT + dI) v
where g =
SL2 (R).
c d
Consider the spa e L(G, H) of H -valued fun tions spanned by all left translations of c(g).
The left a tion of SL2 (R) on this spa e is a linear representation of this group. It is generated
by the ovariant pen il (cT + dI)1 of operators.
A ovariant fun tional al ulus is dened as a ontinuous linear intertwining map between two representations of a group: the rst representation a ts on s alar-valued fun tions,
the se ondon ve tor valued ones. The intertwining property repla es an algebra homomorphism in the standard onstru tion of fun tional al ulus. The above a tion of SL2 (R)
is an example of ovariant al ulus.
A ovariant spe trum is dened as the support of ovariant fun tional al ulus, that is a
de omposition of the intertwining map into primary subrepresentations. Su h omponents
asso iated with the above SL2 (R) al ulus fall into three large lasses, with the pairings
dened by the usual and indenite inner produ ts as well as degenerate one.
We dis uss some aspe ts of ovariant spe tral theory for Toeplitz operators.

- lasses, Riemann-Hilbert problems and Toeplitz operators

M. Teresa Malheiro
University of Minho, Portugal
e-mail: mtmmath.uminho.pt
We generalize the notion of Q- lasses CQ1 ,Q2 , whi h was introdu ed in the ontext of WienerHopf fa torization, by onsidering very general 2 2 matrix fun tions Q1 , Q2 . This allows
us to use a mainly algebrai approa h to obtain several equivalent representations for ea h
lass, to study the interse tions of Q- lasses and to explore their lose onne tion with ertain
non-linear s alar equations. The results are applied to various fa torization problems and
to the study of Toeplitz operators with symbol in a Q- lass. This talk is based on a joint
work with Cristina Cmara.

An asymptoti method of fa torization of a lass of matrix fun tions

Gennady Mishuris
Aberystwyth University, UK
e-mail: ggmaber.a .uk
A new asymptoti method of anoni al fa torization of n n matrix fun tions is dis ussed.
This is motivated by ertain problems of fra ture me hani s. The method is illustrated by
a simple example. The talk is based on a joint work with S. Rogosin.

Waves and fra ture in dis rete stru tures with exural members
Mi hael Nieves
Liverpool John Moores University, UK
e-mail: m.j.nievesljmu.a .uk
In this talk, we onsider the dynami fra ture problem for a beam-made latti e strip with
additionally periodi ally pla ed point masses. The ra k is assumed to propagate steadily
along the strip. The problem is redu ed to the Wiener-Hopf equation, from whi h the
omplete solution is obtained. The ratio of the wave radiation energy to the total energy
ux from the external load is determined as a fun tion of the ra k speed and the stru ture
parameters. In this way, the ra k-speed-dependent ma rolevel fra ture riterion is found.
The fra ture a ompanied dynami ee ts are dis ussed. Joint work with Prof. L.I. Slepyan,
Prof. G.S. Mishuris and Dr. A. Zagnetko.

An overview on dira tion problems with rational wedges

Ana Paula Nolas o
University of Aveiro, Portugal
e-mail: anolas oua.pt
The expli it representation of waves dira ted from non-re tangular wedges belongs to a
famous lass of open problems in dira tion theory. These problems are often modelled
by Diri hlet or Neumann boundary value problems for the 2D Helmholtz equation with
omplex wave number. Using analyti al methods for boundary integral operators (more
pre isely, pseudodierential operators) together with symmetry arguments, we solve expli itly a number of referen e problems for the Helmholtz equation regarding rational wedge
angles ( = m/n, with m, n belonging to N), Diri hlet and Neumann boundary onditions,
8

in a Sobolev spa es framework. The talk is based on a joint work with F.-O. Spe k and T.
Ehrhardt.

Wiener-Hopf fa torization through an intermediate spa e

Frank-Olme Spe k
IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal
e-mail: fspe kmath.ist.utl.pt
An operator fa torization on eption is investigated for a general Wiener-Hopf operator W .
The main result shows equivalen e between (generalized) invertibility of W and a so- alled
fa torization through an intermediate spa e of the underlying operator A, whi h implies a
formula for a generalized inverse of W . The result is signi antly dierent from the ross
fa torization theorem and more useful in numerous appli ations. Examples in lude the
Simonenko on eption of generalized fa torization of matrix fun tions in Lebesgue spa es
as well as on rete examples in dira tion theory where the intermediate spa e turns out to
be an unisotropi Sobolev spa e.

On Toeplitz operators with triangular monomial almost periodi matrix

symbols
Ilya Spitkovsky
College of William and Mary, VA and New York University Abu Dhabi, USA and Abu
Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
e-mail: ilyamath.wm.edu
We onsider dened on the real line matrix fun tions with monomial terms of the form c ei x
on the main diagonal and one row, and with zero entries elsewhere. The fa torability of
su h matri es is established and, moreover, the algorithm for their fa torization is provided.
In parti ular, formulas for the partial indi es are derived, and onditions for them to all
equal zero (that is, for the fa torization to be anoni al) are stated. These results are then
used to obtain Fredholmness riteria for the respe tive Toeplitz operators, with su h matrix
fun tions as their symbols. The talk is based on joint work with Yuri Karlovi h and Juan
Loreto-Hernandez.

Wiener-Hopf derived weight fun tions for fra ture problems along imperfe t
interfa es
Adam Vellender
Aberystwyth University, UK
e-mail: asv2aber.a .uk
We onsider interfa ial ra k problems in bi-material linearly elasti and isotropi solids with
soft imperfe t interfa es. The presen e of imperfe t interfa es (typi ally used to model a
thin layer of adhesive) fundamentally alters the distribution of stresses near interfa ial ra k
tips. Taking this behaviour into a ount, we formulate suitable weight fun tion problems
and employ Wiener-Hopf type methods to nd their solutions. These auxiliary solutions aid
in the evaluation of all important onstants in asymptoti expressions des ribing physi al
elds. Further, perturbation analysis then allows for the inuen e of small defe ts on the
propagation of the main ra k to be des ribed.
