bakay or illegal cockfght-
ing in their village on April
8, the scene of an alleged
buy bust that went bad
and resulted in the death
of three people. They only
softened their stance when
a private citizen represent-
ing the Gawad Kalinga
at Tambulilid spoke out
about the illegal cockfghts
in their village.
Brgy. Chairman Max
Jaballa said that he was
only told about the illegal
cockfghting that day and
that he did not notice the
presence of a mini-cockpit
in their village, thinking it
was only a payag or hut.
In various versions, his
councilors also echoed his
thoughts, even those who
lived almost beside it.
Edgar Sasing, former
barangay chairman and
now a councilor, said the
tigbakay was promoted
by one Simban. Sr. Insp.
Neil Montao, Ormoc city
deputy police director for
operations, said that Sim-
ban was a personality on
their watch list for drugs.
Sasing admitted that
the council had toyed the
idea to let Simban handle
their festa-related tigbakay
but claimed that he was
bothered to learn he had
already started holding
cockfghts even before the
period allowed under City
Ordinance No. 36. He was
on his way to tell him about
it that day, he said.
Tambulilids fiesta is
on May 20. Under the city
ordinance, barrios are al-
lowed to hold tigbakay at
least fve times in relation
to their festa. For this year,
Tambulilid was granted a
permit to hold tigbakay on
May 3, 10, 17, 19 and 20.
The barangay offcials,
however, fell silent when

her knowledge to people
interested to learn yoga

Margie, in a brief, says
that her interest in the an-
cient discipline deepened
over the years and that I
want to share yoga to ev-
eryone.
She said her classes are
flow-based classes and
methodical and thought-
fully sequenced to gradu-
ally build heat and open
the body for deeper poses.
The asanas (postures) and
the vinyasas (movements)
build strength and improve
fexibility.
She assured that stu-

Biotechnology helps farmers attain
corn self-sufficiency
FOR THE first time, the
Philippines is self-suffi-
cient in corn.
Meaning, Filipino corn
farmers get the market
and the income because
the country need not im-
port corn anymore. In the
process, corn traders also
save on valuable foreign
exchange
used t o
buy corn
f r o m
abroad.

Self-sufficiency was
achieved by biotech corn,
or yellow corn which have
been genetically engineered
to resist attacks by pests and
to enable the crop to survive
herbicides used to rid corn
felds of weeds.
The years 2012-2013
were significant mile-
stones for the country,
said Dr. Randy A. Hautea,
Global Coordinator of the
International Service for the
Acquisition of Agri-biotech
Applications (ISAAA).
For the frst time, it be-
came self-suffcient in corn
feed with a modest surplus
for export, he said, add-
ing that more than 400,000
Filipino families benefted
from biotech corn.
The Philippines is 12th
in a global ranking of coun-
tries planting gene-modi-
fed crops, planting 800,000
hectares to biotech yellow
corn, the only country in
Southeast Asia to do so.
Corn is the countrys
second most important
crop; white corn is the main
staple of 14 million Filipi-
nos. Yellow corn is used to
make feeds for livestock.
Some 600,000 households
depend on corn as a major
source of farm income.
It was a horrible year
for agriculture (but) the sav-
ing grace was corn, said
former Science Secretary
Emil Q. Javier, adding 2013
was a banner year for the
Philippines.
The 800,000 hectares
planted to biotech corn is a
very remarkable progress,
he said. Doubly remark-
able is that most are planted
by poor farmers.
The phenomenal
spread over time is un-
precedented, he said.
Corn production ex-
ceeded expectations in
2013, said Dr. Segfredo Ser-
rano, Agriculture Undersec-
retary for Policy Planning,
Research and Development.
If the Philippines stops
importing corn, so much
more corn are available
to other countries, said
Dr. Paul Teng who chairs
the Board of Trustees of
ISAAA which promotes the
adoption of biotech crops
worldwide.
The 80-fold increase in
11 years of planting biotech
corn in the Philippines is
faster than the global rate,
said Hautea. It cap-
tures the adoption ex-
perience worldwide.

in 2012 to 397,500 in 2013.
ISAAA estimates that farm-
ers gained $378 million
since 2003, when biotech
corn was frst released, up
to 2012.
The report cites a study
of STRIVE (Society Towards
Reinforcing Inherent Vi-
ability for Enrichment), a
private foundation in Los
Banos, showing that biotech
corn could provide farm-
ers an overall income ad-
vantage over conventional
yellow corn of up to 14
percent in the wet season to
48 percent in the dry season.
A common element
in their stories was the fact
that their income increased
two- or three-fold as they
adopted the biotech corn
variety, the ISAAA report

ing majority (93.2 percent)
expressed their intent to
continue adopting biotech

CEBU PACIFIC Air (PSE:CEB) adds domestic fight frequencies to
world-renowned Philippine beach, diving and surfng destinations,
to accommodate passenger demand during the summer season.
CEB will add two weekly frequencies from both Manila and Cebu to
Boracay (Caticlan). From April 27 to May 4, CEB will operate 64 weekly
fights from Manila to Caticlan. From April 10 until further notice, 20
weekly fights from Cebu to Caticlan are available.
Those headed from Manila to Coron (Busuanga) can also choose
between 20 weekly fights. Two weekly frequencies were added on
select dates in April and from May 5 until further notice.
Meanwhile, those headed from Manila to Cebu can choose between
up to 92 weekly fights on select dates in April and from May 11 to 31,
2014. This route utilizes both Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft, increasing
the number of available seats.
CEB also strengthens its Cebu hub, with a total of 11 weekly fights
from Cebu to world-renowned surf spot Siargao (additional 4 weekly
frequencies) from April 19 to June 6, 2014.
More fights from Cebu to Puerto Princesa (total 11 weekly fights)
and to Legazpi (total 6 weekly fights) are also available between April
and June 2014.
Cebu Pacifc will continue to offer guests our trademark lowest

their summer vacations, said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution
Candice Iyog.
Those still booking fights and planning their summer itineraries

OUR CHRISTIAN faith tells us that Gods
love for us is eternal. Its a love that goes
all the way to showing mercy for us in the
form of his Son becoming man and taking
up all the sins of men by dying on the cross.
No greater love can there be other than this
love of God for us.
St. Paul drives home this point when he said
in his Letter to the Romans: He that spared not
even his own Son, but delivered him up for us
all, how has he not also, with him, given us all
things? (8,32)
Thats why, in spite of our proclivity to
sin and make a mess of our own lives, we can
always have reason to be hopeful, because God
never gives up on us. The problem is that we
can give up on him and go our own desperate
ways which we try to sweeten with all sorts of
defense mechanisms.
We just have to make sure that we do not
get spoiled by that love, because even if Gods
love and mercy is eternal, his justice is never
sacrifced. His mercy and justice always go
together, in proportions, if we have to speak in
human terms, that are just right.
That divine justice unleashes its power
precisely when with all the infnite goodness of
God, we fail to return good with good, love with
love. Instead, we allow ourselves to get spoiled.
Lets not forget that getting spoiled is a hu-
man choice. Its not part of Gods plan and will
for us. But since our freedom is a real freedom,
and not just an imitation, we also have the power
to return good with evil, love with hatred.
Its important therefore that we realize very
deeply that our true freedom is when it is lived
with God, not outside of him. It is lived when,
instead of feeing from him like a fugitive when
we commit sin, we go to him to ask for forgive-
ness and change our life.
St. Peter asked for forgiveness when he de-
nied Christ, not only once but three times. And
as a movie spiel would have it, a saint is not one
without a past, and neither is a sinner without
a future. Everything depends on whether we
return to God or not.
So, instead of getting spoiled by the abun-
dant and certain mercy of God, we should rther
learn to react properly. And that is none other
than to repay love with love. There should be
an impulse in us to grow better and mature in
our spiritual life of love for God and others.
Absent this impulse, the only possibility is to
get spoiled.
This love is shown when we develop a true
and deep spirit of penance. We have to learn
to acknowledge our sins and weaknesses. We
cannot return to the right path unless we frst
acknowledge our mistakes. We should be man
enough to do that, always at the impulse of grace
which God never refuses to give.
We should always presume that there is
something wrong with us. Not that we have to
cultivate a negative attitude toward ourselves,
since we neither can deny that we also have,
thank God, a lot of good and positive things in
us. We just have to be realistic and acknowledge
this wounded condition of ours as a given in
ARE WE captives of pre-conceived ideas
of Easter?, theologian Eamonn Bredin asks.
Do we assume that Easter is little more than
the simple resuscitation of a larger-than-life
Jesus?
Then, we have no hope, he writes in Re-
discovering Jesus. Thatd only be a reprieve,
before we slip back into death. If for this life
only we have hoped in Christ, St. Paul wrote,
we are, of all men, most to be pitied.
The Philippines leads the world in the
number of people who believe in God, a Uni-
versity of Chicago research group reports,
based on surveys taken in 30 countries since
1991. Here, 94% percent believe in God, fol-
lowed by Chileans, 88%, and Americans 81%.
Belief was lowest among East Germans, 13%
and Czechs, 20 %.
A head count, however, can paper over the
deeper fssures. Why is the Philippines, reputed
to be the only Christian nation, also among the
most corrupt?, asks former Asian Develeop-
ment Bank lead economist and UP professor
Ernesto Pernia. This disconnect, may have to
do with the weak link or lack thereof be-
tween faith and practice.
The late Jesuit scientist Fr. Jaime Bulatao,
SJ, called this as split-level Christianity. A
politician attends mass on Sunday, then plunders
Monday to Saturday. Think Malampaya sound
and pork barrel racketeering. Hear that Jinggoy,
Juan Ponce, Bong and Co?
What is the empty Garden tomb, with its
folded burial shroud, to us? Few of us think of
our deaths and Easter is time to grapple with
the two great mysteries that confront us: God
and death.
There are many Easter stories, scholars tell
us. But they all express the same message: God
did not allow Him to be held in death. And
Jesus appeared to Simon /me/us/ them.
Luke and John come close to a physical de-
scription of Jesus after his death by crucifxion.
Time and space no longer bind Him. He comes
and vanishes, even if doors are shut. Nor do
they recognize Him immediately, in the Upper
Room or on Lake Galilees shores.
They encounter the crucifed Jesus in a new
way. He had become another, Fr. Catalino
Arevalo, SJ of Loyola House of Studies notes.
I think of that quaint expression people some-
times use in Taglish: You are very another na.
They recognized Him in the breaking of
bread - description of the Eucharist and mass,
since Pilates time, the evangelists add. Thus,
the Eucharist is Jesus revealed to us as Em-
manuel, Arevalo adds. He is the God who is
with us always: fellow wayfarer, companion on
lifes journey, friend of all our nights and days
That is why there is such a bond between Easter
and the Eucharist.
But only 36% of Filipino teenagers believe
in the Eucharistic Presence, a survey found.
Over 49% thought the Host was just a symbol,
or a reminder. The rest were uncertain. Without
this bond, will these youngsters, like the women
on Easter morning, futilely seek the living
among the dead?
In the Holy Week readings, we read how the
Masters followers scampered in fright. Before
the cock crows, you will deny Me three times,
He told a self-confdent Peter earlier. So, what
transformed them after Easter?
They met Jesus after Calvary and arrived at
an absolute certitude: this Jesus who died on the
cross had entered into a radically transformed
life. They now speak not about some kind of
His cause goes on, Bredin notes. Rather, they
assert: Jesus has been brought, through death,
into Gods future.
That experience brought Peter the Rock out
of Simon the betrayer, or a crucifed Paul out of
a crucifying Saul, or the church of martyrs out
of the scattered disciples.
The disciples experience has been refracted
to us over the centuries. In September 1637, a
catechist from Tondo, Lorenzo Ruiz, refused
to renounce his faith. He was executed along
with other Christians in the persecutions of
the Tokogawa shogunate. And in April 1672,
Pedro Calungsod from the Visayas was speared
to death while protecting the Jesuit missionary:
Diego Luis de San Vitores. He was named saint
in 2012.
After the resurrection, the disciples saw
the living Christ, who they knew to have died,
with the eyes of faith, St. Thomas Aquinas
was to write. Thus, the language used by Paul
and others in speaking of the Easter appearance
is different. They do not say; We have seen
Jesus again, but we have seen the Lord and
worshiped Him.

of Easter in their lives - Blessed Mother Teresa
Jesus dies on the cross with a skeptic and a new convert
to whom He said ... today you shall be with me in
Paradise.

ITS QUITE an uneventful week, I think, not
unless I missed out on another shooting at an
illegal gallera. Ohhh, not really uneventful.
Most people I know grabbed the long holiday
period to savor it with their families.
Next to Christmas (which is actually more
stressful because you have to think about gifts
and parties), Holy Week holy-days are more
laid back and refective. At least for us.
This time, we went back to VSU for a one-
day escapade. We had a 5-month old grand-
child in tow, so we didnt want to be far from
home. We stayed at the Hostel since we were
outgunned to reserving the Seafront Suites, our
usual choice.

Speaking about gallera or cockpit, the
committee on oversight of the Sangguniang
Panlungsod here in Ormoc had a fact-fnding
meeting with offcials of Brgy. Tambulilid.
It was an interesting meeting and was called
for in the aftermath of a buy bust that went bad
when the subject allegedly ran into the cockpit
and started fring at people. Three men died
including Dr. Jay Movilla, a 32-year old dentist.
At this juncture, I would like to offer the
family our condolences. I did not really know
the dentist knew him by face. I also had the
chance to get acquainted to his brother, Jeremy,
during a social function. Jeremy told me they

I havent talked to them since but a good
family friend said the family plans on bringing
charges to whoever was responsible for the
dentists death. They are still waiting for the
result of the investigation that is now being
spearheaded by the CIDG.
Back to the oversight fact-fnding meeting,
I could not help but be amused at the answers
of the barangay offcials. As if orchestrated,
nobody seemed to know about the tupadas or
tigbakay which have been going there for a
time already.
The barangay chairman claimed that he was
not fond of cockfghting so he did not know.
Two councilors whose house are just near the
mini-gallera claimed they did not know of cock-
fghts going on until that fateful day because
they would leave their house early (when the
cockfghts have not started) and return home
late. Actually, one councilor slipped. She said
she goes home at 5:00 PM which should be the
time when the cockfghts are just starting to heat
up, but claimed she did not see cockfghting.
All of them did not know that the cockpit
was a mini-gallera, saying they thought it was
just a payag na pahuwayan.
As for not receiving any report from the
tanod, the excuse was that all the tanods as-
signed during the day were women. Does it
mean that women cannot see and hear a cock-
fght going on?
Of the people from Tambulilid that after-
noon, only a person, Mr. Boboy Igot, was not
deaf and blind. With a quivering voice, he told
the oversight committee that the cockfghts

magazine dated Feb 2014 and written by

NOV 8,2013 - Back in Cebu,we had no news
yet from relatives and friends in Tacloban,
Leyte - no text messages as their cell phones
were all out and neither did we get TV broad-
casts, nor status postings on Facebook. My
family and I were quite worried.
Nov 10 --Around 1 a.m. Sunday, I really
couldnt fall asleep, concerned about the situa-
tion of my friends and relatives in Leyte without
food and electricity, no candles and fashlights,
nor drinking water. At home, the internet was
down,so I decided to go and access the offce
internet for news, and prepare to go to Tacloban.
Then, I heard about looting and some killings.
I checked the internet again so as to have an
idea about what I could do and bring along, and
how to secure myself from danger there. As I
browsed the internet, all the headlines were
about Yolanda, and some horrifc images and
shocking aerial shota came up. Tacloban had
been wiped out, especially San Jose where most
of my relatives resided. I thought it would have
been hard to have survived in such a situation. I
was really uneasy and wanted to break into tears
in front of my offce mates. Staying in the offce
all that night up to 5am, I gathered news from
different websites and social networks. Then I
texted Pierro, the leader of our Focolare Youth
or Gen unit in Cebu, to ask if we had a meeting
that day. Pierro replied that he was with Ryan
(another Gen) at the port area, about to leave for
Tacloban with some relief goods in a coast guard
ship which would have departed as soon as the
DSWD relief goods would be loaded onto the
ship. Hearing that, I grabbed my backpack, took
two extra shirts and a pair of shorts, my wallet
and mt ATM card, and bought some things for
my trip. Then I went straightaway to the port
area and it was a good thing that my friends
were still there, but then we found out that our
ship could not leave that day.
Nov 11 -- I stayed in the port area for
almost one whole day and night because I was
afraid the ship would have left on short no-
tice. It was Monday morning before our ship
fnally left port. The usual 3 - 4 hours journey
stretched out into 24 hours as our ship had to
deviate from its usual route. This journey was
tiring me out. I made a list of people whom I
had to look for. Some people in Cebu had also
requested me to search for their friends and
relatives in Tacloban. On the way, I learned
from my mother that some relatives had already
been transported to Jaro, Iloilo,and were safe. I
heaved a sigh of relief.
Nov 12 -- By early dawn Tuesday, we
reached the port of Tacloban City. As our ship
slowly approached the port, I could not believe
what I was seeing and feeling. It was eerily
silent , and even if the sun was rising, I saw a
lifeless city, and then the frst corpse foating
on the water . there was the stench of death
hangingin the air.
I had really planned my route before I
started my 1,000 km marathon. From Tacloban
City proper, Iwent to Real to El Reposo , then
straight to Coca Cola Burauen , to Kalipayan,
and back to the pier. My mission: to gather as
many friends as I could, together with their
immediate families, and bring them back to
Cebu on this coast guard ship. The frst house
I reached was that of my friend, Marty. Their
house was still standing when I spotted his
mother. I asked her about Marty and she replied
that they were all at the airport. I was so glad that
they were all alive!! I continued walking, and
for the frst time of my entire life, I saw many
of the dead alongside the streets. Corpses were
being thrown onto dumping trucks. I witnessed
mothers wailing, kids and babies crying, and
the desperate faces of fathers -- it was really a
sad scenario. I passed by schools and churches
which had been turned intoevacuation areas,
to check if any of my friends were there, and
looked for them everywhere, but I didnt fnd
anyone.
I reached the house of my friend, Edward. I
was really nervous because their place had been
devastated, and it was near the sea. I really lost
heart when I caught sight of their demolished
houses. Then I noticed Edwards aunt cleaning
outside, and asked , Maupay,buhi hi Ed, este
ada hi Edward? His aunt remembered me and
smiled, expressing surprise at my visit. Finally,
Edward came out and we were so glad to see
each other! I informed him about the ship in the
port area and that it would be leaving for Cebu
the same day. Their family met briefy and in
less than 10 mins they agreed toevacuate.
Along my way I saw many high school
friends, and a friend whom I hadnt met for
,ore than 5 years. He was a victim himself and
didnt know anything about his family in Tolosa
which was 50 kms away from his school. I was
so moved because he had started helping with
the relief operations in a schoolwhere he taught,
while he was also concerned about his family.
I told him about the boat departing that day but
he chose to stay. X x x
Nov 14 -- We arrived in Cebu, at the port
of area on Thursday, Nov 14. Noni, a Focolare
volun-teer, came to bring us to the Focolares
Bukas Palad Social Center. One could really
feel their love in the way they had prepared the
center to welcome the typhoon victims.
Yolanda had brought out the best in me! I
am very happy to be part of the Focolare, happy
to be a Gen and to experience the life of unity
fowing in my veins after all the hardships of
the last few days.
This corner agrees wholehearedly with the
views of the writer, Leigh Nemenzo, because
the typhoon also hit Ormoc City.
IT BOTHERS me whenever I see any of my
sons answering or calling someone on the
phone while driving. They would argue that
I am paranoid but I would counter that it is
better to be safe than sorry.
A study confrms that dialing, texting or
reaching for a cellphone while driving raises
the risk of a crash or near-miss, especially for
younger drivers. But the research also produced
a surprise: Simply talking on the phone did not
prove dangerous, as it has in other studies.
And even though talking doesnt require
drivers to take their eyes off the road, its hard
to talk on a phone without frst reaching for it
or dialing a number things that raise the risk
of a crash, researchers note.
The risk of a crash or near-miss among
young drivers increased more than sevenfold
if they were dialing or reaching for a cellphone
and fourfold if they were sending or receiving
a text message. The risk also rose if they were
reaching for something other than a phone,
looking at a roadside object or eating.
Among older drivers, only dialing a cell-
phone increased the chances of a crash or
near miss. However, that study began before
texting became more common, so researchers
dont know if it is as dangerous for them as it
is for teens.
Engaging in distractions increased as time
went on among novice drivers but not among
experienced ones.
But other researchers disagree on the fnd-
ings that merely talking on a phone while driv-
ing was not dangerous. The study methods and
tools may have underestimated risks because
video cameras capture wandering eyes but cant
measure cognitive distraction.
You dont swerve so much when youre talk-
ing on a cellphone; you just might run through
a red light, and sensors would not necessarily
pick up anything amiss unless a crash occurred.
In the United States, at least 12 states ban
the use of hand-held cellphones while driving
and 41 ban text messaging. All cellphone use is
banned by 37 states for novice or teen drivers,
says the National Conference of State Legisla-
tures, citing information from the Governors
Highway Safety Administration. I hope that the
Philippine Legislatures are just as vigilant when
it comes to this problem.
But a more serious problem now arising is
the tendency of some drivers to furtively watch
MTVs or videos of their favorite shows in their
i-Pad while driving. Thats reckless!
Now, we know texting and driving is dan-
gerous, but walking and texting could be just
as bad. The number of emergency room visits
among people who were trying to text while
walking jumped 35 percent between 2009 and
2010--from 1,113 up to 1,506, according to an
Ohio State University study. And considering
that was nearly triple the number of texting-
while-strolling accidents reported in 2007, the
likelihood of a tree trunk meeting your face
or walking into someone or something while
staring at your cellphone in the near future are
soaring, the study suggests.
Thus, those who feel inclined to rest in
the emergency room or to personally make use
of their St. Peter Plan, keep on texting while
crossing a busy street!

Much of our problem stems precisely from
the fact that we tend to gloss over our sinful-
ness. This is actually a form of cowardice, or at
least an inappropriate way of dealing with our
objective situation, much like the ostrich hid-
ing its head in the sand to avoid some dangers.
Acknowledging our sins, mistakes, weak-
nesses, failures, etc., is never a wrong thing
to do. It is the frst step to healing, to being
forgiven, to setting things right again. Thus, we
need to make regular examination of conscience
and acts of contrition. And then confession, a
sacrament that has tremendous powers of for-
giving our sins.
This practice of acknowledging our sin and
confessing will help us to know ourselves bet-
ter, and to give ourselves an idea of where to
get some help. It will make our conscience both
sensitive and delicate, on the hand, and strong
and more resistant to temptations, on the other.
As human persons, we are meant to seek
help. No one can live properly without the
help of others. And this is especially true in our
spiritual life. We need spiritual directors and

and the women) of trying to anoint the Cruci-
feds body, turned into a life-changing event.

We understand why the barangay offcials
seemed uncooperative to the probe. Maybe,
they thought it was to fnd fault with how they
dispensed their duties. One councilor, however,
became candid (after Mr. Igot said his piece)
and told the committee that they are already
discouraged from cooperating with law enforc-
ers because they have had experiences of the
whistleblowers being killed.
Its a sorry state we are in. Our barangay
offcials, pillars of righteousness and the law
in our villages, fail to function well because of
fear from bad elements. If we continue this way,
where is this city heading?
I was also uncomfortable with the revelation
that the barangay council itself was okay for one
Simban, allegedly on the police watchlist for
drugs, to become the cockfghting promoter of
a planned festa-related cockfghting by May.
I would think that barangay offcials would
have more sense associating with such char-
acters.

It is indeed time to revisit our Cockfght-
ing Ordinance. I hope the amended version, if
it happens, would be more tight and not prone
to abuse.
May I also stress that under the cockfghting
ordinance, ONLY BARANGAY FIESTAS are
allowed to have tupadas fve times during the
season, and not sitios. In fact, it is NOT allowed
in any of the city districts!

tell the truth, Igot said the
tigbakay had been regularly
going on at the same place for
two weeks already.
In the vernacular, he said
it was impossible for the ba-
rangay officials not to know
what was going on because it
was noisy and that traffc even
spilled out on the streets when-
ever a tigbakay went on.
It was also learned that the
property where the mini-cock-
pit was situated was owned
by Ernesto Geneston of Brgy.
Canadieng. Geneston, who was
present, said that one Iba or
Eva, a woman who claimed
she was sent by the barangay
officials, asked him if they
could rent the lot. He was paid
P 2,500 for it but added that
before that, he already heard
reports that his empty lot was
being used as a place where
tigbakay were held.
The fact-finding in aid
of legislation was headed by
councilor Vincent Rama as
chairman of the councils over-
sight committee. Rama stressed
that its purpose was fnding out
if there was a need to revise
Ormoc City Ordinance No. 36
or the Cockfghting Ordinance
of Ormoc City.
He said that aside from

also reports that such places
have also become breeding
places of other illegal activities
like drug pushing.
Rama said that just before
the Tambulilid incident, some
20 families in Brgy. Tambulilid

area. The same was reported
to Mayor Edward Codilla and
could have spawned the buy
bust that went bad.

Mariano Corro, who happen-

rather vague on who was al-
lowed to hold the tigbakay,
in view of the allegations of
barangay officials that they
would have held it themselves
but decided to contract it out
to Simban.

The worship is condemned by the Catholic Church in Mexico as invalid and blas-
phemous, but it is frmly entrenched among Mexicos lower working classes and various
elements of society deemed as outcasts.
Santa Muerte generally appears as a female skeletal fgure, clad in a long robe
and holding one or more objects, usually a scythe and a globe. As the worship of Santa
Muerte was clandestine until the 20th century, most prayers and other rites have been
traditionally performed privately in the home.
However, for the past ten years or so, worship has
become more public, especially in Mexico City after Enri-
queta Romero initiated her famous Mexico City shrine in
2001. The number of believers in Santa Muerte has grown
over the past ten to twenty years to several million follow-
ers. Santa Muerte has similar male counterparts in the
Americas, such as the skeletal folk saints San La Muerte
of Argentina and Rey Pascual of Guatemala.
In the late 2000, the founder of Mexico Citys frst
Santa Muerte church, David Romo, estimated that there
were around 5 million devotees in Mexico, constituting
approximately 5% of the countrys population. By this time,
Santa Muerte reportedly had become Mexicos second-
most popular saint, after Saint Jude, and had come to rival
the countrys national patroness, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Known also as Seora de la Noche (Lady of the
Night), she is often invoked by those exposed to the
dangers of working at night, such as taxi drivers, mariachi
players, bar owners, police, soldiers, and prostitutes. As
such, devotees believe she can protect against assaults,
accidents, gun violence, and all types of violent death.
Often, Santa Muerte stands near statues of Catholic
images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin of Guadalupe, St. Peter,
St. Jude, or St. Lazarus. In the north of Mexico, Santa
Muerte is venerated alongside Jess Malverde, with altars
containing both frequently found in drug busts. However,
some warn that Santa Muerte is very jealous and that her
image should not be placed next to Catholic saints or there
will be consequences.
The cult of Santa Muerte is present throughout the
strata of Mexican society. A large following developed
among Mexicans who are disillusioned with the dominant,
institutional Catholic Church and, in particular, with the
inability of established Catholic saints to deliver them
from poverty.
The phenomenon is based among people with scarce
resources, excluded from the formal market economy, as
well as the judicial and educational systems, primarily
in the inner cities and the very rural areas. Devotion to
Santa Muerte is what anthropologists call a cult of crisis.
Devotion to the image peaks during economic and social
hardships, which tend to affect the working classes more.
Santa Muerte tends to attract those in extremely diffcult or
hopeless situations but also appeals to smaller sectors of
middle class professionals and even the affuent. Some of
her most devoted followers are those individuals associ-
ated with petty economic crimes, committed often out of
desperation such as prostitutes, pickpockets and thieves.

Filed with this Court is a verifed Petition for
Correction of Entry of Birth Records of Antonieta Chan
Flores fled by herself with a Special Power of Attorney
executed in favor of Gil Noly T. Avila to represent her
in the proceedings of the case.
Petitioner alleges that she was born on October
23, 1969 in Quezon City to the spouses Donato Can-
dela Chan and Frustosa Capilitan Gulles, who are
domiciliaries of Tanauan, Leyte.
Due to a series of inadvertences, two Certifcates
of Live Birth have been issued in the name of the pe-
titioner, to wit: one issued by the Offce of the Local
Civil Registrar of Tanauan, Leyte stating her date of
birth as October 23, 1966 and place of birth as Tanauan,
Leyte; and another issued by the Offce of the Local
Civil Registrar of Quezon City stating her date of birth
as October 23, 1969 and place of birth as Quezon City.
From the very start, petitioner has been using the
data refected in her Certifcate of Live Birth issued by
the Offce of the Local Civil Registrar of Quezon City in
all her records. In support thereof, she attaches a copy
of her Certifcate of Marriage and Drivers License.
She now prays that her Certifcate of Live Birth
issued by the Offce of the Local Civil Registrar of
Tanauan, Leyte be corrected to conform to the correct
entries in the Certifcate of Live Birth issued by the
Offce of the Local Civil Registrar of Quezon City and,
thereafter, for the same to be deleted.
Finding the petition suffcient in form and sub-
stance, the same is hereby given due course.
Let a copy of this Order be posted in three
conspicuous places and published in a newspaper of
general circulation for three (3) consecutive weeks in
accordance with existing rules and procedure and at
the expense of the petitioner.
The initial hearing is set on June 4, 2014 at 8:30
oclock in the morning before this Court sitting at the

ORDER
A verifed petition having been fled with the
Court by petitioner, thru counsel, praying that after
publication, notice and hearing correction be made on
the Certifcate of Live Birth of Krizel Jamin as follows:
1. Her year of birth be corrected from 2002 to
2000.
2. 2. The frst name of her mother should be
spelled MA. LETECIA and not MA. LETECIA; and
3. Other relief consistent with law and equity
are also prayed for.
Finding the petition being suffcient in form and
substance, let the initial hearing be set on June 4, 2014
at 8:30 oclock in the morning at which date and time
all interested person may appear and show cause, it
any they have, why this petition should not be granted.
Let copy of this Order published at the expense
of the petitioner once a week for three (3) consecu-
tive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation
duly authorized by this Court after a raffe had been
conducted by the Branch Clerk of Court.
Furnish copies of this Order and the petition to
the Solicitor General Makati City, the Civil Registrar
General, the National Statistics Offce, the Provincial
Prosecutor, Naval, Biliran Province, the petitioner and
counsel as well.

THE PHILIPPINE Press Institute quietly marks
its golden anniversary with the conferment of the
annual media awards, the holding of its annual
assembly and other events in Metro Manila. Former
President Fidel V. Ramos will be keynote speaker
with this years golden theme @50 and Beyond.
The theme has added signifcance because what lie
beyond this celebratory milestone are real challenges
that the Philippine press still must face. It has to deal
with issues on credibility , media killings, legislative
advocacies, search for justice, press freedom, capacities
and working conditions of media workers, mechanisms
of redress, internal discipline and viability, among oth-
ers. And decidedly, the bigger challenge today is the
emerging dominance of cyberspace as a faster platform
for information and views.
It is in this environment that PPI is marking its
half-century milestone mindful that the Philippine
press must continue and remain to do its role in up-
holding press freedom and provide the public with
verifed, accurate and truthful information that is vital
to democracy.
So while we celebrate, we are also burdened by
the thought that there is much yet to be done @50
and Beyond.

mindful transitioning.

FR. KIM C. MARGALLO, a priest
assigned at the St. Peter and Paul
Parish here, reminded churchgoers
that Easter Sunday was celebrating
mans salvation from sin and not for
superstitions.
He said this during his Sunday
homily at the barangay chapel in
District 28, saying that this year, they
had to change the way how the early
Easter Sunday mass was held. The
early morning mass on Easter Sun-
days is called Sugat which depicts
how Christ was resurrected and met
by his frst followers.
He said that appalled at his ex-
perience last year when they were
pushed and jostled by those who
joined the procession to grab fowers
from the carriages of the images, they
decided to adorn the church altars
instead and just let the carriages of
the images be bare.
The strategy proved successful
as the procession went smoothly
this time.
Fr. Margallo said that after his
harrowing experience last year, he
asked around why people wanted
the fowers so much that they could
not even wait until the procession
was over.
He was told that it was used as a
good luck charm by people, espe-
cially gamblers. Some would boil it in
water and would make their fghting
cocks drink from the brew before a
fght, believing that it would make
their bets win. Others brew it to cure
various ills because it was blessed.
Fr. Margallo reminded the fock
that superstitions did not have room
in the Christian faith. There is only
one savior, he said, and that is
Jesus.

Folk religion and Catholicism gives birth to
the devotion of Santa Muerte?

WHILE THERE are no reported cults or sects
worshipping Santa Muerte in the Philippines,
it is of interest to note that just like here in the
country, folk religion mixed with Catholicism is
very much practiced in other parts of the world.
A fascinating if macabre devotion is found in
Mexico, also a predominantly Catholic country, which
has reportedly spread to the United States. It is the
devotion of the Nuestra Seora de la Santa Muerte
or, colloquially, Santa Muerte (Our Lady of the Holy
Death). She is a female folk saint and the personifca-
tion of death. She is associated with healing, protec-
tion, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees.
Not sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church,
her cult arose from popular Mexican folk belief. Before
their conversion, natives worshiped various gods and
Santa Muerte is seen to somehow fll a gap where
natives feel the Catholic saints cannot fll. Since the
pre-Columbian era, Mexican culture has maintained a
certain reverence towards death, which can be seen
in the widespread commemoration of the syncretic
