Image of Resurrection and the Blessed Relic of San Juan Nepomuceno

In 1800s, during the establishment of the parish in Sum-ag, the community was given the
Santo Ara, containing the relic of our patron saint, San Juan Nepomuceno.
As years passed, first generation of Sum-aganons donate various religious items and
artifacts to the parish to strengthen the and solidify the link of the community to the parish.
Among these religious items is the image of the Risen Christ or the Resurrection.
A couple of years ago, the Santo Ara, containing the relic of our patron saint, was
borrowed from the church to aid in the healing of a sick elderly. That was the last time for
anyone to see the Santo Ara. Aside from those who are aware of its significance to the parish,
most churchgoers are unaware and unmindful that the Santo Ara containing the relic is missing.
Recently, a misunderstanding with the diocese concerning a portion of the parish grounds
disrupted the harmony in the parish. Prayers and petitions invoking the intercession of our
patron saint, San Juan Nepomuceno were offered to resolve the discord. Those who
remembered the missing Santo Ara start to offer novenas that the religious item will be found
soon.
On September 3, 2013, after the novena mass to San Juan Nepomuceno, people at the
convent started to notice a unique piece of marble lying at the back of the church. One of the
churchgoers, Tomas Rosquillo, recognized the item for what it is the missing Santo Ara
containing the relic of San Juan Nepomuceno.
The day after the Santo Ara was found, our parish priest Fr. Mao Buenafe, together
with Parish Committee on Liturgical Arts chairman Tomas Casiano, opened the room at the
back of the sacristy that has been closed for years. The room was filled with religious items
such as linens and booklets. All of them were destroyed by termites except the wooden image
of the Resurrection that was lying on top of the table. Although dusty and broken, the image
was untouched by the termites.
Today, September 8, 2013, as we celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Mother Mary, we
present the image of the Resurrection and the Santo Ara. These religious items have strong
connection to the dynamic journey of faith in our parish.
May through the intercession of San Juan Nepomuceno and the loving and merciful
guidance of our Lord, the Risen Christ, the community in Sum-ag will remain devoted and
faithful.*
