This extension was written by Christian Delabos and published in 1995 in Claymore magazine #7.
The extension and the three associated scenarios were translated by ob !ingell in "ebruary #$$$.

1. INTRODUCTION
We have seen, at the court of the (Mongol) Emperor, the Grand Prince of Russia, the son of the
King of Georgia, many sultans and other princes to hom they pay no respect! and even ordinary
"artars ho have #een sent to escort them, hoever poor they ere, al$ed in front of them and

(n the 8(((th century9 the )ongol hurricane swept o&er :urasia and reduced to cinders towns and
empires. :urope and the 1oly ;and underwent their attac<s and 6apan repelled two in&asions. 1ere
is something that merits a %ew scenarios %or 3Croisades59 3-amoura=5 and 3Cry 1a&oc5>
To put these scenarios into operation9 we need a game aid? so here it is>

2. TACTICAL COMPOSITION O THE MONGOL ARMY
Fne o% the greatest strengths o% the )ongol *rmy was that a maAority o% the army was made up o% a
power%ul national ca&alry. 1owe&er9 other peoples did %ight %or the )ongols? these auxiliaries were
primarily %oot soldiers.
I,FT:? 3Croisades5 as published proposes using the counters %rom 3-amoura=5 .excluding the
mon<s9 ninAas and peasants/ as )ongols9 but gi&ing all shortbows9 all treated as unarmoured with a
mounted mo&e o% 1@ and a %oot mo&e o% H. The rules below o%%er a better balance and9 in particular9
pro&ide the horse archers that %ormed such a maAor part o% the )ongol armies.J

)embers o% the hea&y ca&alry were eDuipped with a coat o% mail9 a breastplate o% scale mail9 a
scimitar and a lance +.5 metres long. )ost hea&y ca&alrymen also carried the )ongol bow .see
below/.
To represent the )ongol hea&y ca&alry9 use the mounted -amurais .%rom 3-amoura=5/ and the
Eoyal )amlu<s .%rom 3Croisades5/. Fnly the -amurais armed with a bow should be treated as
being armed with the )ongol bow.

The )ongol light ca&alry was composed entirely o% horse archers. These men carried the recur&ed
mongol bow9 a weapon more power%ul e&en than the 2elsh longbow .see rules below/.
To represent the )ongol horse archers9 use the counters .%rom 3Croisades5/ %or the horse archers9
the -elAu< light ca&alry archers9 the Turcopoles and the )amlu< light ca&alry. *ll o% these counters
should be treated as carrying the )ongol bow.

IEules %or one additional type o% arrow9 the %laming arrow9 are pro&ided in -iege. These rules are an
optional extra9 but should be used sparingly.J The bow9 one o% the oldest missile weapons9 has
undergone many modi%ications o&er the centuries .short bow9 long bow9 compound recur&ed bow9
etc>/. 1owe&er9 we must not o&erloo< the arrows9 which also ha&e <nown some specialisation? the
hunting arrow9 the war arrow9 the cutting arrow9 etc>
The )ongols were a people that <new how to use bows to the best ad&antage9 and they had an
impressi&e number o% types o% arrow a&ailable to them. This game aid concerns two types o% arrow
which can be used as options? the arrow with an explosi&e head and the cutting arrow.
These two types o% arrow can be used alongside normal arrows. During a campaign9 at the start o%
each tactical battle the archers are reGsupplied to their maximum carrying capacity with the di%%erent
types o% arrow? they can ne&er ha&e more than 5 arrows o% each o% each o% these types.

This is only a&ailable to the )ongols who had the secret o% gunpowder than<s to their contacts with
the Chinese. They were certainly used %rom the end o% the 8((th century in the :ast and )iddleG
:astern states.
:ach )ongol archer may carry only 5 o% these arrows. 2hen an archer dies and he still has some
explosi&e arrows9 another archer may pic< them up by remaining %or a %ull turn next to the dead
archer without %ighting or shooting.
-hooting with an explosi&e arrow is only possible during o%%ensi&e %ire. The %use must %irst be lit9
one o% the most dangerous moments %or the archer. The player rolls 1D1$9 and on 1G+ the arrow
explodes and <ills the archer .this happened Duite o%ten/.
(% the arrow has not exploded9 the player designates a target hex and rolls 1D@ to see i% the
explosion has any e%%ect on adAacent hexes around the target. 1 means that only the target hex is
a%%ected9 #G@ means that one adAacent hex9 counting cloc<wise %rom lower le%t9 is also a%%ected .the
hex immediately in %ront o% the target is ne&er a%%ected R @ is the hex on lower right/.

This type o% arrow can be used by all types o% archer. (ts purpose is to cut the tendons o% horses and
so unhorse the <nights who will then be on %oot and more &ulnerable.
:ach archer may ha&e 5 o% these arrows. *s with the explosi&e arrows9 when an archer dies and still
has some cutting arrows9 another archer can ta<e them by remaining next to the body %or 1 turn
without %ighting or shooting.
The cutting arrows can be used only in o%%ensi&e %ire. They are used only against mounted targets.
-hooting is only possible with aimed %ire9 thus only at short range?

2e will ignore the modi%ications to mo&ement allowances proposed in the rules to 3Croisades5. The
)ongols did not run %aster than other men9 and their horses were not the swi%test in the world.
The mo&ement allowance o% an in%antryman is thus H )o&ement 7oints .)7s/. The allowance o% a
hea&y ca&alryman is 1# )7s. The allowance o% a light ca&alryman is 15 )7s.
Fn the other hand9 the )ongol armies were &ery well organised %rom the point o% &iew o% strategic
reconnaissance and %rom the point o% &iew o% supply. This excellent organisation bore %ruit in
relation to strategic mo&ement .see section #.' o% the 3Croisades5 rules/.

This scenario uses 3-amoura=5 and 3Croisades5 plus the Crossroads and Fpen "ield maps.

the )ongol %leet. The land that separates him %rom the main body o% the %orce is Duite rough9 so that
three or %our days will be needed be%ore he can reAoin them. )any dangers will press on him and his
small troop o% men %ar %rom help in enemy territory4
*t least he has %ound a bridge to cross a raging torrent that barred his route. This will certainly place
him out o% the shadow o% an un%ortunate encounter9 and will sa&e him precious hours.

land .so it would be impossible %or the )ongols to deploy properly/. The solution proposed seems
the best way to resol&e the problem9 assuming that TThe Coast0 is an errorC the 2D Nillage map has
the same orientation o% numbers as in the diagram9 and it suits the location. 7layers may wish to try
alternati&e map layouts %or the two lower maps.J
