We admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our
wrongs. Step Five of the Twelve Steps
As any good therapist will tell you, you cannot heal what you do not acknowledge, and what you do not
consciously acknowledge will remain in control of you from within, festering and destroying you and those around you.
Step Five fits the biblical notion of restorative justiceto restore relationships themselves, to restore integrity
with myself, and to restore a sense of communion with God. Humanity needs such an honest exposure of the truth, and
true accountability and responsibility for what has happened. Only then can human beings move ahead with dignity.
Only mutual apology, healing, and forgiveness offer a sustainable future for humanity. Otherwise, we are
controlled by the past, individually and corporately. We all need to apologize, and we all need to forgive or this human
project will surely self-destruct. No wonder that almost two-thirds of Jesus teaching is directly or indirectly about
forgiveness. Otherwise, history winds down into the taking of sides, deep bitterness, and remembered hurts, plus the
violence that inevitably follows. As others have said, Forgiveness is to let go of our hope for a different or better past. It
is what it is, and such acceptance leads to great freedom, as long as there is also accountability and healing in the process.

Richard Rohrs words quoted above are helpful for any of us trying to live a gospel approach to life,
and they are particularly helpful to the members of a church in transition.
As a church says goodbye to its pastors and looks forward to welcoming a new minister, its easy for
people in the church to focus on the past. Some focus on regrets, perceived shortcomings, or frustrations.
Others idealize the past and place the former pastors on a pedestal. Both approaches are unhelpful.
I ask your forgiveness for any actions I ever took that fell short of the gospel. I forgive you for any of
your shortcomings. I pray you will find and faithfully walk the path God has prepared for you, individually
and collectively. I love you!
During any pastors tenure, a church will do some things well and do some things poorly. A pastor will
excel in some areas and struggle in others. However you perceive the past 13 years, they are past. Give thanks
for the blessings you perceive as part of that time and let go of the rest.
Most importantly, move your focus to the present. God is present in the here and now. Ask God to help
you discern how you can be a conduit of grace in this moment of the churchs life. Ask yourself how you can
be a healing, unifying, life-giving presence in the lives of other church members, and in the lives of people who
cross your path. Let the past teach you, support you, sustain you, but live in the present.
Dont let yourself get caught up in the future either. Youll be tempted to ask all kinds of future-
oriented questions, but those questions will be pointless unless you have first answered questions grounded in
the present. Who are you, collectively, as First Christian Church? Where is the church strong today? How does
the church benefit the community? Where is God most active in the life of the church today?
First Christian Church has a magnificent past. It has a promising future, but it can only bring the gospel
to the world in this present moment. Celebrate and forgive the past, entrust the future, and embrace the now.
God is in your midst, within you, and around you. Find ways to invite others into awareness of Gods
steadfast, loving presence. Amen?

SeniorAdultsMetTues.,
June17,2014
The Senior Adult Ministry
Group met on June 17. There were 21 present
including our speaker Sloan Hamilton. Sloan
is the Operations manager at Loch Leven and
we enjoyed seeing pictures of the newly
renovated Campbell Lodge and other projects
in progress or completed around the campsite.
Many of our group have fond memories
of activities at Loch Leven and shared those
memories. Sloan gave us the vision for the
future of this treasure in our region and it was
so encouraging. We meet next month on
Tuesday, July 15, at 12 noon in Chapman
Lounge. Our speaker will be Barbara Giasone.
Barbara is a former reporter for the OC register
and is currently a volunteer police officer in
Fullerton. She will be sharing about her career
and at the end will talk a little about some of
the services of the Police Department. Put the
date on your calendar and we will see you
there. Sammie

FCCWorkDayWithHabitat
ForHumanity
Saturday, June 28, will be
framing day for Habitat for Humanity at the
new La Habra site. We have been given the
opportunity to help with this project. We are
asked to be there by 7:30 A.M. and be prepared
to work until 3:00 P.M. We will be framing the
first floor of two homes out of a total of seven
new homes.
The first question that is asked by most
is, What do I need to know in order to frame
or help. If you know what end of a hammer to
grab onto, you are qualified. If you do not
know, there will be a five-second lesson and
the rest of the knowledge will be given on the
job site. There will be supervisors and crew
leaders and Geezers to help and make sure we
do the job properly.
If you are willing to learn and have
some fun, tell Ed Linberg or Craig Wallace by
the 22 of June. The site is located on La Habra
Blvd. across the street from Washington
Middle School. We really need the help.

OfferingOfLettersJune29
The 2014 Offering of Letters is
set for a week from Sunday, June 29. You may
come early before worship to participate in this
activity. Or, you may participate before or
after the farewell event for Darrell that will
follow worship next Sunday.
This year's Offering of Letters is devoted
to Reforming U.S. Food Aid. David Beckman,
President of Bread for the World, has written
this about this effort.
"For more than 50 years, U.S. food aid
has benefitted more than 3 billion people in 200
countries. The U.S. is the world's largest food
aid donor, and we are proud of our record.
However, when 870 million people go hungry
every day, making each dollar count is both a
responsible use of taxpayer funds and a moral
imperative.
With smart changes to food aid
programs, our government can both respond
more quickly when disaster hits and reach
more people.
We can provide food that is more
nutritious, especially for mothers and children.
We can better support small-scale farmers and
build local economies by obtaining food aid
closer to where it is needed.
With reforms, and with same level of
funding, US. Food aid can benefit up to 17
million more people each year."
While the Offering of Letters is focused
on reforming food aid that goes beyond our
borders, you'll be interested to know that one
reform regarding food aid in the U.S. is already
in the works, thanks to Fullerton's
representative in the House, Ed Royce. He
introduced an amendment to the agricultural
appropriations bill that was before the House
on June 10. The amendment provides $10
million for local and regional purchases of food
by the government enabling food-aid dollars to
be spent locally, more efficiently, and to reach
more people. The House passed Royce's
amendment. The amended agricultural
appropriations bill will go to the Senate with
the hope it will be approved by them and, if
approved, sent on to President Obama for his
signature. Congressman Royce introduced his
amendment at a reception which was part of
Bread for the World's Annual Lobby Day held
on June 10th this year. This was part of the
celebration of Bread for the World's 40th
Anniversary.
Sunday's worship bulletin will have an
insert about the Offering of Letters. Please be
sure to read it and take it with you to give you
more information about this year's Offering of
Letters in which we'll participate on Sunday,
June 29th. The Outreach Ministry

HealingTouchSpiritual
Workshop
On Sat. July 19, from 9:30
A.M. -12:30 P.M., First Christian Church
Whittier will be hosting an Introduction to
Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry: Using Your
Hands to Heaven
The Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry
program helps participants connect energy
healing with their faith, and with the history of
healing in the Church. This program is rooted
in both the Judeo-Christian perspective and
Eastern healing modalities. We recognize that
all healing comes from God, and that we can
be conduits of Gods healing compassion.
For churches, HTSM is an effective
addition to the work of the Elders, Stephen
Ministries and Pastoral Partners calling on
church members who are hospitalized or
homebound.
Rev. Louise Sloan Goben is the
instructor. Louise is an ordained minister of
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and
serves as Associate Minister at First Christian
Church, North Hollywood. She is also a
Certified Practitioner of Healing Touch
Spiritual Ministry and an instructor with the
Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy.
There will be a $15 suggested donation for the
event. Register with Rev. Kel Henderson,
(714-465-6991) or with Donna in the church
office.

HowWouldYouFeel.......
As a parent with school
aged kids if you couldn't afford
the supplies on your kid's list?
As a kid who didn't have the supplies
on the list??
As a teacher with a minuscule budget
watching some of his/her students doing
without?
We have an opportunity as a church to
relieve a small portion of the burden from
families and schools by making a donation to
the Outreach Ministry Team. We would like to
donate 25 bags of school supplies to needy
children. The bags would include the
necessities for a successful school year;
notebook, scissors, pencils, pens, and crayons
(to name just a few of the items being included
in the bag). Each bag will cost between $10 -
$15 to fill. It would be wonderful if we could
offer a little hope and comfort to some little
kids who could use this small hand up.
Your donation should be made out to
FCC and indicate in the memo section school
kits
The Outreach Ministry
P.S.
Just this week we received the following
from Week of Compassion regarding the
urgency of these kits:
Urgent appeal for more CWS School Kits
Church World Service Kits are a great way
your congregation can make a difference in a
hands-on way. Week of Compassion
partnership with CWS makes a significant
difference in the lives of people all over the
world. With the latest shipment of CWS School
Kits to WOC partner IOCC in response to the
Syrian refugee crisis, CWS is now down to
about 60 cartons of School Kits at the New
Windsor Warehouse and 120 cartons at the
warehouse in Ferncliff. We need to replenish
these supplies immediately.
CWS School Kits give children in
impoverished schools, refugee camps, or other
difficult settings some of the basic tools for
learning, so it is vitally important that we
replenish our supplies as quickly as possible.
In the case of Syria, IOCC supports one
of the largest established networks to deliver
life-saving humanitarian aid inside Syria,
where more than 9.3 million people are
currently in need of assistance.
In November 2013, some 3,000 CWS
School Kits were shipped for distribution in
Syria. CWS School Kits include some of the
basic necessities for learning, including
notebooks, pencils and crayons. These kits help
children return to normalcy faster, helping
them avoid the long-term effects of trauma.

Execut i ve Di rect or, Sept . 1, 2014
Vy Nguyen holds a Master of Divinity
from the Divinity School at the University of
Chicago, and earned his B.A. in religious
studies with a minor in environmental sciences
from Texas Christian University. He joins
Week of Compassion after serving for more
than 5 years with Church World Service for the
Southwest Regional Office where he worked
with congregations and donors to increase
their fundraising portfolio. Prior to his work
with Church World Service, Vy worked with
the Lutheran Volunteer Corps office in
Berkeley, CA where he brought stability to the
program and increased support for the
organization among volunteers, congregations,
and non-profit agencies. LVC doubled the
number of volunteers and non-profit agencies
during his tenure. As a former refugee who
came to the United States through the efforts of
Refugee and Immigration Ministries and
Church World Service, he has witnessed first-
hand the vital role that Week of Compassion
provides throughout the world.
