Most states permit some windows to be tinted.
Regulations differ about which windows may be tinted
and which light transmissions are allowed. BEFORE
installing ANY window film on ANY vehicle, you
should check with your state police and comply with
appropriate tint laws. The factory and the retailer
assume no responsibility for the misuse, illegal, or
improper application of windowfilm. Some states also
require certification labels which must be applied
between the filmand glass BEFORE application. To
receive a copyof your states tint lawandanyappropri-
ate certificationstickers, send$1.00andthe front panel
of thefilmboxto: GILA Film Products, Dept. CS/L, PO
Box 5068, Martinsville, VA 24115. All requests must
beinwriting. Certificationlabels cannot besent without
proof of purchase information.
DO NOT apply any automotive filmto thermal or
dual-pane residential windows.
Automotive films are generally safe for single pane
residential windows.
DO NOT apply any filmto frosted, etched, leaded,
cracked, holed, deeplyscratched, flawed, or otherwise
defective glass.

Change the utility knife blade after each window
tinted.
Start with the smallest flat windowfirst to become
comforable handling the film.
Applyfilmina shaded, well lit, dust free environment.
Apply filmwhen air temperature is between 40F
and 98F for at least three days.
Handle the filmcarefully to prevent creasing.
Installation is easier with two people.
Wet fingertips when handling the filmto avoid leaving
fingerprints.
DO NOT apply filmto Plexiglas, plastic, or acrylic
windows.
1 CLEAN THE WI NDOW THOROUGHLY
The cleaner the glass, the better the finished
application will look.
DO NOT use ammonia, vinegar, or householdglass
cleaners to clean glass immediately prior to film
application.
SpraytheSolutionontheinsideandoutsidesurfaceof
the window.
Use a razor blade to scrape away dirt or residue
fromthe glass.
Be sure to wipe downall gaskets where dirt maybe
trapped.
Re-sprayandcleanbothsurfaces of the glass.
Use a squeegee to drythe glass surface.
2 TRI MMI NG THE FI LM
Identifythelinersideof thefilm. Thelineris rolledtothe
outsideduringmanufacturing, buttodouble-check, rub
the filmagainst itself. The stickyside is the film;
the slickside is the liner.
Wettheoutsideofthewindow, andthenroll thefilmliner
side facing outonto the exterior of the glass (final
installation will be done on the interior). (Figure A)
Trimawaythe excess filmroll. (Figure B)
For roll down windows, position the filmso that the
straight bottomedge extends about 1/4to 1/2
belowthe top of the inside gasket.
Wet the outside of the filmwiththe Solution.
Squeegee gently down the filmto temporarily hold
it in place for trimming.
Use the utility knife to trimthe vertical edges first.
To avoid damage to the glass when trimming on,
press knife gently at a lowangle, using only enough
force to cut throughthe film. Always tear excess film
awayfromyou.
Before trimming the top, open the door and gently
liftthebottomedgeof thefilmfromtheglass. Do not
remove the filmentirely fromthe glass. Reach inside
androll the windowdownabout 2.
Using the top of the windowas your blades guide,
trimthe filmto the edge of the glass. (Figure C)
3 REMOVI NG THE CLEAR LI NER
With the filmstill on the glass, place one piece of
transparenttapeoneachsideof thefilmcorner, half of
the tape on the film, half extending over the corner
edge. (Figure D)
Press the two pieces of tape firmly together, and then
quickly peel themapart to separate the liner from
the filmand to expose the adhesive.
Remove the liner while spraying the newly exposed
adhesive thoroughly with the Solution.(Figure E)
Once the liner is fully removed, try to keep the film
fromtouching itself.
4 APPLYI NG THE FI LM
Spray the inside of the windowgenerously with the
Solution.
Carefullylift the filmfromthe outside of the glass.
Place the wet adhesive side of the filmagainst the
wet inside glass.
Before you position the filmon the glass, fold up
the bottomedge so that the adhesive does not touch
the door andpickupanydirt. (Figure F)
Slide the filminto place, leaving about 1/8to 1/4
gap at the toponroll upwindows.
Spray the outside of the filmwith the Solution.
Squeegee the top of the filmfirmly to the glass. Do
not squeegee the bottomportion of the filmyet.
(Figure G)
Roll upthe window.
Toensurethatthebottomof theglass is clean, respray
with the Solution and squeegee. Wet the window
again, and then unfold the filmdown onto the glass.
Slip the bottomof the filmunder the gasket.
Usingthe edge of the squeegee, pull back the gasket
so that the filmwill slide easily behind it. With your
fingers and the squeegee as guides, run the film
under the gasket completely, being careful not to
crease it.
Once filmis tucked under the gasket, squeegee
firmly downward until all of the water is pushed
out fromunder the film. Push any bubbles that
remain under the filmto the nearest edge.
To finish, wrap the low-lint cloth around the hard
edge of the squeegee, and firmly push the Solution
down to the nearest edge. The cloth will absorb any
excess solution andkeepitfromcreepingbackupunder
thefilm.
Rear windowsespecially on passenger cars--are
often curved fromboth side to side and top to bottom,
and filmcannot conformto these compound curves in
one piece. Therefore, we recommend using the GILA
Rear Windowkit to tint the windowusingpre-cut strips.
If you didnt purchase a Rear WindowKit, you can cut
your own strips. Using a 2 x 6.5 roll, unroll the filmon
a clean, flat surface. Usea straight edge(ruler or yard-
stick) to measure and cut the filminto strips measuring
6x6.5. Astandardroll shouldyieldfour strips.
1 CLEANI NG THE REAR WI NDOW
Clean the inside and outside of the windowas you
did withthe side windows, usinga plastic scrubbie to
remove any stubborn debris.
DO NOT usea razor bladeonrear windowdefroster
lines or dot matrix.
Clean under the gasket and around the brake light
to remove any embedded dirt.
2 PREPARI NG THE STRI PS
The filmstrips will be prepared on the outside of
the window(final installation will be done on the
interior). Wet the topof the windowwiththe Solution.
Starting at the left side, roll the first strip across the
top of the glass underneath the dot matrix pattern,
with the liner side facing out. (Figure H)
Trimthe right edge with a sharp blade.
Squeegee the strip into place and then trimthe
left edge.
Spray the windowagain in preparation for the next
strip.
Repeat these steps until you have three strips
prepared on the glass, overlapping the strips slightly
atthemiddleandmoreatthesides. Adjusteachstrip
so the overlap with the previously installed strip is
the same at the left and right, with a 1/16to 1/8
overlapinthe middle. Note that the strips will naturally
have a greater overlaptowardthe left andright sides
thaninthe middle.
The final stripwill be done after the first three are
applied.
3 APPLYING THE STRIPS
We recommendthat youuse a fluorescent shoplight
to helpilluminate the rear windowfromthe inside.
Remove the topstripfromthe backglass thenmove
to the inside of the vehicle.
Remove the liner fromthe first 8to 10of the film
strip, andwettingthe adhesive as yougo.
Spraythetopof thewindowinpreparationfor applying
the strip.
Apply the strip to the window, moving fromleft to
right, removingtheliner as youworkacross theglass.
(Figure I)
Usingthesoftrubberedgeof thesqueegee, squeegee
the water fromunder the film.
Repeat these steps with each filmstrip, overlapping
the strips inthe same manner as theywere prepared.
4 PREPARI NG THE FI NAL STRI P
Lay the final strip across the outside of the rear
window. Trimthe bottomto the edge of the dot matrix
pattern.
Place the fluorescent light in the rear window to
illuminate the brake light area. Trimthe filmaround
the edge of the brake light. Never obstruct the brake
light withfilm.
Apply the filmto the inside as with previous strips,
fitting the brake light cut out aroundthe light housing.
Squeegee the filminto place, removing all Solution
fromthe corners andedges of the glass.
You may notice imperfections such as air bubbles or
debris betweenthefilmandtheglass. EZMountadhesive
allows you to peel the filmaway fromthe glass, fix the
problem, andre-applyfor upto24hours. Simplypeel the
affected area of the filmaway fromthe glass, spray with
solution, anduse your squeegee or knife to remove any
debris orbubbles. Re-spraytheadhesivewiththeSolution
andre-applytotheglass. Onceapplied, re-spraytheouter
surfaceof thefilmandre-squeegee.
Thefilmfully"cures"over thenextweekto10days. Dry,
sunny weather speeds curing; wet, cold weather pro-
longs it. Duringcuring, thefilmmayinitiallylookhazyor
cloudy; this effect will disappear with time and/or expo-
sure to heat (i.e. the sunor a hair dryer).
The best way to clean the film is to use the GILA
Application Solution and a rubber squeegee.
Thoroughly spray the area to be cleaned with the
Solution. Use lint free towels to wipe clean. It is safe to
use ammonia-based window cleaners if the cleaner
doesnt sit onthe filmfor a prolongedperiodof time (no
more than1-2minutes).
EZMount adhesive makes removal easy and clean.
Removal is as easy as peeling the filmaway fromthe
glass. However, depending on when you purchased
your film, it may not contain EZMount adhesive. If your
filmhas beeninstalledforseveral years oritdoesntpeel
off the glass easily, please use GILA Film Removal
Solutionto facilitate removal. Youcanfindthis Solution
at the GILA film display in most retail outlets. More
detailedremoval instructions canbe foundonour web-
site.
