BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
When Richfield native Emily Black
(nee Baumann), now 29, was mapping
out her future nearly a decade ago, it did
not include staring down death as a col-
lege student.
But thats exactly what she was
forced to do.
A 20-year-old attending UW-
Whitewater in 2005, Emily had just
returned home from Mexico, where she
spent a semester preparing be a Spanish
major, when she discovered a suspicious
mole on her back.
I couldnt even see it, but my mom
suggested I go to the dermatologist, said
Emilywho now lives in Houston with her
husband, Calebduring a phone inter-
view with the Express News. The doctor
said it was nothing to worry about, he
sees this all the time, that it was common
at my age.
But the biopsy results told a different,
far more alarming storymelanomaand
the young woman was forced to put her
life on hold indefinitely while she took on
an insidious beast.
The fight of her life
When first diagnosed, Emily and her
family parents Mike and Lori Baumann
and younger sister Kerridid not know
what they were facing.
We had no idea what stage the can-
cer was or if it had spread, said Emily,
who then entered a revolving door of
doctors, drugs and ever-chang-
ing fears.
She was referred to a doc-
tor at Froedtert Hospital who
told her she was in the early
stages of skin cancer and put
her on a preventative drug
called interferon for several
months.
But when scanned again
several months later, Emily was
given the terrifying news that
she was at Stage 4 and the
cancer had spread to her liver.
That drug had done noth-
ing to help me, she said.
Next she was sent to a doc-
tor in Madison who put Emily
on a high dose of interleukin-2
which was administered during
a series of overnight stays in the
hospital that spring.
That drug kept me stable
and bought me time, Emily
said.
Although in retrospect she views fall
2005 as definitely a scary time, then
Emily remained securely cloaked in total
denial even as a Milwaukee-based doc-
tor gave her a year to live.
I was like, I have skin cancer, Ill be
fine and just go back to college, but my
parents realized the gravity of the situa-
tion, she recalled.
Searching for answers
At that point in time the only hope
was clinical trials and we were just
weighing all our options, said Emily.
As doctors decided how to approach
things, they sent Emily to Bethesda,
Maryland to receive treatment at govern-
ment-run research facility National
Institute of Health (NIH).
They were excited to treat me, said
Emily, explaining how doctors employed
a natural killer cell methodfor which
the patients own cancer-fighting cells are
extracted, grown in a laboratory and
reintroduced to the body. That bought

A 34-year-old Richfield man is facing sev-
eral criminal charges stemming from a series of
incidents that occurred during the late after-
noon hours of June 8.
The suspect, Daniel J. Plier, was charged
in Washington County Circuit Court June 17
with misdemeanor counts of theft, criminal
damage to property, two counts of obstructing
an officer and operating a motor vehicle while
revoked and a felony charge of attempting to
flee or elude a traffic officer.
A conviction for misdemeanor theft, crimi-
nal damage to property and obstructing an
office each carry a possible sentence of a
$10,000 fine, nine months in jail, or both.
A conviction for operating after revocation
carries a possible sentence of a $2,500 fine,
one year in jail, or both. A conviction for
attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer car-
ries a possible sentence of a $10,000 fine,
three years and six months in jail, or both.
According to the criminal complaint, a
police officer was dispatched to the After
Hours Lingerie and Gifts business at N136
W21931 Bonniwell Road after receiving a
report the business was being robbed. A wit-
ness told police that an individual later identi-
fied as the suspect had activated an alarm and
stolen merchandise. The suspect was being
prevented from leaving the area by employees
and customers of Ink My Body Tattooz. An offi-
cer arriving at the scene observed that individ-
uals were boxing in the suspects vehicle at
the scene.
The officer ordered the suspect to exit the
vehicle several times. The suspect responded
by backing out the vehicle, during which time
he nearly struck a witness, and then traveling
on the north side of the business. The officer
followed the suspect in vehicle with the squad
vehicle lights activated. The suspect failed to
stop and continued driving until he reached
the Pioneer Plaza Truck stop in Richfield. The
suspect then drove around several semi-trucks
in the lot and drove onto the lawn of a resi-
dence in the 3200 block of Pioneer Road. By
that time, the pursuit had occurred over 4.2
miles and included speeds of 60 mph.
Once the defendant stopped his vehicle,
he refused to comply with officers. As the sus-
pect walked toward another officer, an electri-
cal weapon was activated, at which time the
suspect was taken into custody.
Police recovered several items from the
business in the suspects vehicle.
Witnesses later told police that drain open-
er and an insect control substance had been
poured inside the business, causing a total of
$1,804.99 in damaged items.

Police are seeking information on the van-
dalization of Zimmermanns Kettle Hills Golf
Course, 3375 Hwy 167 West, Richfield, dur-
ing the overnight hours of May 10-11.
At approximately 5:08 a.m. the
Washington County Sheriffs Department was
dispatched to Kettle Hills for a report of van-
dalism to the golf course. Course
Superintendent Lee Suwalski was present and
the one who first noticed the damage.
Damage on the course exceeded
$20,000. These costs included the totaling of
six golf carts and the repair of three addition-
al carts. Three of the carts ended up in the
ponds throughout the course. In addition to the
carts being taken and damaged, the course
itself was also affected. Several of the bunkers
and greens needed repairs. The fences were
also broken in several areas. One of the carts
must have been used to smash through the
fence, breaking the fence post and causing
damage to the golf cart, which could have
caused injury to the individual in the cart.
An active investigation is being completed
by the Washington County Sheriffs
Department and Kettle Hills Golf Course will
be offering a $2,000 reward for information
provided leading to the arrest and conviction
of those involved. Any information can be
passed along to the Washington County
Sheriffs Department in West Bend at (262)
335-4378.

With summer underway, it is time to play,
but with the sun and fun also comes increased
risk factors in certain areasnamely heat, water,
physical activities and wildlife.
Dr. Chitra Bhosekar, M.D., Assistant Clinical
Professor of Internal Medicine at North Hills
Health Center and Director of Clinical Services
Unit at Community Memorial Hospital in
Menomonee Falls, offered her words of wisdom
for summer safety.
Summer is finally here and were looking to
enjoy those precious sunny times, she said.
The last thing one wants at that time is a calami-
ty robbing us of life's precious moments.
Unfortunately we do see a lot of individuals for
the above-mentioned items.
National experts agree. Summer is great,
but its important to know the risks that come
with it, states the National Safety Council
(NSC) website.
Some tips:
Lather up: Bhosekar said that sunscreen is
essential because it protects both sunburn and
does the very important job of preventing skin
cancer.
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen, said
Bhosekar. I cannot emphasize enough the
importance in maintaining the health of your
beautiful skin. (Along with helping with health
threats), sunscreen prevents the skin from aging
so you can look youthful for several years
longer than if you dont use it.
Heed the heat: Heat illness, according to
the NSC, includes a range of disorders that
result when ones body is exposed to more heat
than it can handle.
Older individuals need to be especially
careful, the organization points out.
Anybody not accustomed to hot weather is
at risk of suffering from heatstroke (the most seri-
ous and lifethreatening heat-related illness) as
well as heat exhaustion and heat cramps, the
NSC website states.
Protect your head: When engaging in out-
door activities, a helmetone that is in good
condition and fits properlyis not just a matter of
convenience, but necessary, experts say.
When doing something like biking and
rollerblading, always wear a helmet, Bhosekar
said. Also, (parents should) ensure that they set
a good example for their children by using a
helmet when participating in these activities.
Swim with a buddy: More than one in five
drowning victims are children 14 years old and
younger, and for every child who dies from
drowning, another four receive emergency
department care for nonfatal submersion
injuries, warns the NSC.
Do not swim alone, said Bhosekar.
Always make sure that another adult or friend
is present when swimming, whether it is a pool
or a lake.
Also, the doctor said, its important to pay
attention to posted warnings when swimming in
a non-pool setting.
Watch for signs at the lakes which direct
you to deeper areas for diving, she said.
Keep the H2O handy: Stay hydrated,
said Bhosekar. As the mercury level climbs up,
we tend to lose water and precious salts from
our body.
Not all beverages are created equal, the
doctor noted.
Drinking electrolyte solutions instead of
plain water (Gatorade, fresh fruit juices, soups)
does wonders for our body in terms of keeping
it fresh and energetic, she said. This function
cannot be done by consumption of soda, sug-
ary drinks and alcohol. Alcohol and carbonat-
ed sugary beverages tend to have more of a
dehydrating effect on the human body.
Be smart with grills and fireworks: With
picnics, barbecues and parades come grills and
fireworks displays, the NSC states, so caution
should always be used when dealing with either
one.
Summer brings an increase in injuries from
backyard grills, bonfires and fireworks, the
website says. In 2010, fireworks caused an
estimated 15,500 reported fires, including
1,100 structure fires. These fires resulted in an
estimated 8,600 people treated in emergency
rooms for fireworks-related injuries, 39 percent
of whom were under 15 years of age.
Use bug spray: Covering oneself with
bug spray is key when heading outside, partic-
ularly wooded areas, said Bhosekar. Any over-
the-counter insect repellent is very helpful when
heading outdoors, she said. These not only
prevent the annoying bug bites, but also the seri-
ous mosquito borne illnesses like west Nile
Fever.
Designate a driver: According to the
NSC, in 2010, there were 10,228 deaths in
crashes involving a driver with a blood-alcohol
content of .08 or higher31 percent of all traffic
fatalities for the year. While it is illegal to drive
with a .08 blood alcohol concentration in all 50
states, driving ability can be impaired below the
legal limit as well, experts warn.
If you are drinking, do not drive, the NSC
website advises. If you plan to drink, designate
a non-drinking driver.
Summer offers many options for fun, said
Bhosekar, and by covering the bases where
safety is concerned, this season can be one of
many pleasant memories.
Stay happy, stay safe and enjoy summer,
she said.
Safety the key for summer fun
People who stopped by the Fred Astaire
Dance Studio in Menomonee Falls for a free
lesson June 6 got instruction from very high pro-
file instructor.
Jonathan Roberts, a professional dancer
who has appeared on the ABC television show
Dancing With the Stars, provided a free les-
son for the cha cha dance during an appear-
ance at the studio.
Roberts was at the studio helping to prepare
students for an event at the Potawatomi Casino
and the free instruction for the general public
was part of his appearance at the community.
I travel to Fred Astaire Dance Studios all
over the country and just like on Dancing With
the Stars give them the same dance training
and lessons, Roberts said.
Roberts appeared on Dancing With the
Stars for seven seasons and his partners includ-
ed Rachel Hunter, Giselle Fernandez, Heather
Mills, Marie Osmond, Monica Seles, Belinda
Carlisle and Macy Gray.
Roberts has been involved with dance for
more than 20 years and his resume includes the
2008 World Professional Champion in Smooth
dance, 2008 US National Champion, 2004
US National Professional Rising Star/Latin
Champion, 2003 Blackpool Professional Rising
Star/Latin Champion, and 1997 US National
Professional Rising Star/Ballroom Champion.
Prior to the lesson, Roberts said the lesson
would be the same as on the television show but
with less people watching.
If you want to be a star without the TV part,
this is the place to do it, he added.
Roberts said that the television show has
made ballroom dance more popular.
It used to be just maybe your grandparents
ballroom danced, now we have 5-year-olds
ballroom dancing. Its really picked up all over
the world in clubs and everything, Roberts
said.
At the start of the lesson, Roberts explained
that when a celebrity would come in for their
first lesson they would be nervous and the first
day is one to two hours.
Theres so much new information theyre
just literally like a zombie, they fall apart,
Roberts said. If you make it to the final, then
youre doing seven, eight, nine hours a day of
rehearsal they just get exhausted. If you get to
the final, youve been dancing with no days off
for four months straight.
Roberts added that as we go through here
and it seems a bit much, youre just like the
celebrities.

Hot weather, humidity
and hearing aids
The summers heat and humidity can cause problems with hearing aids. Moisture
collects in tubing, corrosion forms on contact points and ears may produce more wax.
You can control moisture in several ways. If you perspire a lot, remove your units
mid-day. Wipe off the units and the battery and blot the moisture from behind and/or
inside your ear. Don't keep hearing aids in a steamy bathroom. Invest in a hearing aid
dryer to help remove moisture and condensation. Take advantage of our 20% off

The
Perfect Wedding
(Family Features) For engaged couples, it
can seem as if there are a million things to
accomplish before the big day arrives. One
essential piece of the wedding puzzle involves
creating a registry that makes it easy for guests
to celebrate your union with gifts that reflect
your personality as a couple.
Before Building Your Registry
It's no wonder why guests love the ease
and simplicity of a gift registry. But many cou-
ples may not know where to begin when set-
ting out to create this useful list. Here are some
helpful pointers from Macy's to help you get
started on creating a perfect wedding registry:
Meet with a Consultant: These trained
professionals are on site to assist and discuss
everything you want and need. It's a good
place to start if you have questions on what
items to include and what brands are avail-
able.
Look for Special Programs: Some stores
offer special features, such as Macy's, whose
Dream Fund allows guests to contribute any
amount to the ultimate gift card, so the bride
and groom can later choose exactly what they
want.
Start Early: Most couples like to register
4-6 months before their wedding date, which
allows more time for choosing items, planning
for showers and meeting other deadlines.
Register Together: Whether it's in-store,
online or bothmake a day of it and have fun
selecting all the things that will be part of your
new life together.
Choose Different Price Points: Guests
will appreciate a varied list that has many gift
options to fit their personal budget.
Create a Registry That Reflects You: If
you're a laid-back, easygoing couple, consid-
er registering for a more casual dinnerware
pattern that you can use every day, then mix in
some fancy pieces to use for those special
occasions. If you enjoy entertaining friends
and family, be sure to choose a range of serve-
ware and barware.
Making the Right Choices
With all the things needed to properly
stock your home, selecting the right ones can
seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to
keep in mind while adding to your registry:
Select Your Settings: A five-piece setting
is meant to serve one person and includes a
dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter
plate, tea cup and saucer. If you want to serve
eight guests, you will need to register for eight
five-piece settings.
Factor in Some Extras: When registering
for drinkware, be sure to register for a few
extras in each glass size in case some break
down the road.
Protect Your Cutlery: Be sure to choose
a sturdy cutting board to protect your knife
blades from chips and cracks. You can keep
your cutlery in top condition by registering for
a honing steel and knife sharpener.
Stock Up on Kitchen Must-Haves: When
it comes to cookware, make sure to stock up
on the essentials. This should include a fry pan,
saut pan, grill pan, sauteuse (round, deep-
sided design for sauting on the stovetop or
baking in the oven) and a chef's pan.
Opt for the Basics: White dinnerware
allows you to transform the look of your table
year-round by changing the dcor and acces-
sories around it. The classic look will be a
design that you can appreciate for years to
come.
Visit www.macys.com/registry for a full
registry checklist, helpful tips and more infor-
mation on Macy's Dream Fund.

The Pauline Haass Public Library, serving
Sussex and Lisbon, will be installing person-
alized bricks in the area around the entrance
sculpture this fall. The deadline for ordering is
Friday, July 18.
Forms for brick purchase are available at
the library or online at www.phplonline.org
and can be personalized with two or three
lines up to 14 letters each. Many people
have purchased bricks as memorials to fami-
ly members, or in celebration of birthdays,
marriages and retirements. Others simply
include their own names. For ideas, Library
Director Kathy Klager suggests looking at the
bricks already in place or calling her at
(262) 246-5180 for help with wording or
spacing.
Each brick costs $110, and orders must
be pre-paid. Approximately $80 goes to help
the library purchase additional books and
other materials. Donors can specify adult,
young adult, or children's materials, or simply
designate the money to go to the area of
greatest need.
For ore information, contact the library,
N64 W23820 Main St., Sussex, at (262)
246-5180.

Germantown rallied to beat Nicolet June
17, 4-3. The Warhawks scored three runs in the
bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win.
Randy Finger recorded eight strikeouts in
seven innings for Germantown.
Afterward, Germantown was seventh in
the North Shore Conference with a 3-4 con-
ference record and a 5-7 overall mark.
Menomonee Falls rallied top West Allis
Central 3-2 June 17, as the Indians scored two
runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ty
Weber recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing
three walks in seven innings for Menomonee
Falls. Weber and Daniel Dahlke each had
three hits and drove in one run each.
Afterward, Menomonee Falls was fourth in
the Greater Metro Conference with a 6-4 con-
ference record and a 9-6 overall mark.
Hamilton had a 3-8 conference record and
a 4-11 overall mark following a 14-0 loss to
conference leader Oak Creek June 17.
The Kimberly Papermakers scored three
runs before Germantown recorded the first out
of the top of the first inning in a state Division
1 softball semifinal June 13.
The Papermakers kept scoring, getting
seven runs in the inning on the way to a 15-0
win over Germantown. Kimberly added seven
more runs in the third inning and one run in the
fourth inning.
"It was a very nice run. What do you do?"
Germantown Co-Coach Kurt Raguse said
afterward. "They (Kimberly) came out swing-
ing the bats red hot, not much you're going to
do when they're swinging them like that."
Kimberly scored seven more runs in the
third inning and one run in the fourth inning.
The Papermakers had 16 hits while Kimberly
pitcher Megan Kleist allowed no hits for the
fourth no hitter in Division I state tournament
history.
"They had our number," Raguse said. "Tip
your hat, that's all you can do."
Kimberly won the Division I title the next
evening with a 6-5 win over Westosha Central.
Raguse said the message to the team
afterward was that the coaching staff was
proud of them for the year.
"There's only four teams in the state like us.
There's only four teams that get to call them-
selves state semifinals," Raguse said.
The Germantown team had eight seniors and
seven potential returning players next season.

and capture the second Division III national
championship in program history.
The Warhawks, 44-7, participated in the

The baseball team joins five other national

me a lot of time.
However, at the end of 2007 Emily was
told the cancer was moving to her lungs and
she was referred to a doctor in Chicago.
Flying got to be so normal, she said of
her many trips on the journey to find an
answer.
It was during her 2008 treatments in
Chicagoa drug called ipilimumab (Yervoy)
given via IV drips every three weeksthat she
finally saw amazing results and the tumors
started shrinking.
The doctor was very encouraged and
excited, said Emily. The response to the treat-
ment was so positive.
Setback before success
Then things took another disappointing
turn as Emily began experiencing leg pain
out of nowhere in fall 2009.
The culprit turned out to be a tumor the
size of an apple in her left thigh and Emily was
sent back to the NIH for another clinical trial
that failed.
It was one of my last hopes for treatment
and I felt really hopeless, she said.
As a last-ditch effort Emily was sent to
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in
February 2010 for a cutting-edge gene block-
er trial and she got in at the very, very last
second.
There she was given Zelboarfin the form
of four pills in the morning and four pills at
nightto inhibit the B-Raf gene which is shown
to be mutated in some cancers, and had a
really great response with every scan I had,
Emily said.
After six months, she underwent surgery to
remove the tumor in her thigh and that was
when there was a true celebratory moment: it
was determined that Emilys organs were sta-
ble and there was no sign of cancer in her
liver. After undergoing surgery in August of
that year, Emily was taken off the drug and
since then has not had any treatment at all.
It is still considered Stage 4 melanoma,
but because everything is stable, it is like a mir-
acle, said Emily. I have biopsies here and
there and have had a small surgery, but every-
thing comes back negative. Things have been
really, really stable. They cant say its cancer
and they cant say its not cancer. Its not grow-
ing and they are just watching me.
Blessing in disguise
The cancer derailed many of Emilys
dreams and goals, but it brought her one thing
she would never trade: a knight in shining
armor.
Interestingly, Emily had met Caleb, who
was from a school in North Carolina, during
her trip to Mexico, one of the last normal
times in her life.
"My roommate and his roommate were
friends, Emily shared. And Caleb and I were
just friends at that point.
The relationship blossomed when Emily
sent an email about her diagnosis to a small
group of friends asking them to send prayers
her way.
"(My news) affected him a lot, she said.
He called me and was so concerned.
Soon after, Caleb invited Emily to spend
the week with his family at their property in
South Carolina, and she happily went.
"It sounds weird, but I just needed to get
off the couch, said Emily. It was then that we
saw each other in a different light and fell in
love."
The pair dated for as couple years before
getting married in Richfield. A year ago they
moved to Houston for Caleb to take a job with
an oil company.
As Emily reflects on the couple's love story,
she is struck by just how special her groom is
and what a unique history she has to tell.
"What man pursues a woman who is in the
middle of cancer treatment? she asked with
wonder. It's amazing how Caleb stayed by
my side. He's a great, great guy and he han-
dles every so amazingly."
Due to side effects from the many cancer
treatments she was undergone, Emily is left
with life-long physical reminders such as
sparse hair and spots of vitiligo on her skin.
"The hair on my head is patchy," she said.
"I will wear a scarf for the rest of my life."
But she looks at what she can do, not what
she is lacking.
"I'm kind of a mess, but I'm alive, she said
with a laugh.
An unknown future
Although she had to drop out of college to
focus on recovery, taking part-time jobs along
the way (she now works as an administrative
assistant with Kardo International Ministries, a
Christian ministry based in Houston, which she
likes a lot), Emily is grateful for the life she is
living.
This is not what I would have chosen, but
I wouldnt change anything, she said. It has
been an amazing path and has taught me so
much.
It is Caleb, not herself, for whom Emily has
sympathy.
"I feel like he's the one in the harder
place, she said. I can't imagine watching a
loved one go through this. It's got to be harder
for him and my family than it is for me.
As for the question of kids, Emily said most
of her doctors have told her that pregnancy is
not an option, but that's okay, she says,
"because I lean more toward adopting any-
way."
For now she loves on her Mexican chi-
uaua, Chiclet, which she got right when she
returned from Mexico. Emily said, "She's just
as old as my diagnosis. She is my reminder. I'm
crazy about her.
Emily also loves watercolor painting,
camping and taking bike rides through her
new city.
She views her treacherous journey as a
blessing, one she can use to help other people
as she shares her story with others and give
interviews about the amazing progress that
has been made in cancer research.
Emily credits her faith with the hopeful spir-
it she maintains.
I love it when I can reach out and share
my story and give hope to others, she said. It
was definitely my Christian faith that has
brought me this far. I rely on God completely.
Emily added, I take life slowly. It's still
weird for me to plan even six months into the
future, but so far everything in my life is work-
ing out really well.
