Horse Race / Shootout
Thursday, July 3 & July 24 at 5:00 PM
Cost: $5 per person
This event is a great time! Its almost full contact golf as your
competitors egg you on, sometimes in your backswing.
Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring
teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three
teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a Win
(1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place).
Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for
this event; we like to have fun!

Jim and Carmen Miller
Jim and Carmen Miller appear to be climate extremists. After
31 years in Alaska with subzero lows, they moved to the land
of eternal sunshine and triple-digit highs. In Alaska, we had
nine months of winter and three months of bad weather,
says Jim with a smile. Actually, we both loved Alaska, but as
the years went by, the winters seemed to get ever longer. As
my retirement neared, we knew it was time for a change. We
spent three years searching for the ideal place, and became
intrigued with the concept of adult communities. We visited
Del Webb communities in Nevada and Arizona and ultimately decided on Festival due
to its great amenities and friendly residents.
Jim has enjoyed a highly diversifed career. As a sailor, he worked in the feld of
airborne anti-submarine warfare aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. After the
Navy, as a geophysicist, he moved to Alaska and spent many years exploring for and
developing oil and gas felds throughout the state. He eventually changed careers,
becoming an environmental scientist/engineer, and subsequently retired as the
supervisor of the environmental department at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Carmen had
a rewarding career working as a geriatric-certifed RN at the largest medical facility in
Alaska.
Both Jim and Carmen were born in Germany. Jim was the son of an American Air Force
offcer and Carmen is a native German. After meeting in Alaska, they got married and
have a family of four children and one grandchild.
Since retiring, Jim and Carmen stay busy with Festival activities, including swimming
and using the ftness center. Carmen is a whirlwind of activity, enjoying exercise
classes, FABs, Mahjongg, volunteering for the Social Committee, and being a Del
Webb Ambassador. Jim has authored fve books, including Howling Across Bridges
and After the Purple Heart. Life has been good in retirement, says Carmen. Jim and
I defnitely made the right choice to move here.

We all know regular exercise does great things for the
body. Being active keeps the cardiovascular system
functioning effectively, maintains strength and lean
muscle mass and helps fght osteoporosis. In addition being physically ft
reduces risk factors for Type II diabetes, many forms of cancer, heart disease
and other chronic diseases. Equal to, or greater than, the physical benefts of
exercise are the benefts to the structure and function of the brain.
Exercise, in people of all ages, promotes the process of
making new brain cells-also called neurogenesis. As
humans age, the hippocampus, part of the brain used
for forming and storing memory, shrinks in size. In
research with mice, time spent running on a wheel
showed development of new cells in the hippo-
campus. In addition, these active mice performed
better on simple learning tasks than sedentary
cohorts. In humans, the hippocampus has been
found to be larger in those who are physically ft.
And, exercise has been shown to decrease the risk
for dementia and even slow its progress.
Beyond just neurogenesis, exercise boosts the brains neurotrophic factors.
Neurotrophic factors are small proteins which promote the growth and survival
of brain cells. Research has shown exercise causes the release of brain-
derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which, in turn lead to enhanced memory
and learning. Research also shows a genetic link to BDNF. This may lead some
people to get greater or lesser release of BDNF and see more or less beneft
from it.
Recent research has also showed that infammatory chemicals created from
stored abdominal fat can cross the blood/brain barrier. This allows systemic
infammation to reach the brain and possibly lead to dementia.
Not only does exercise strengthen the blood/brain barrier, it also lowers levels
of systemic infammation and can help reduce belly fat in order to prevent
infammation from starting.
Just as exercise boosts the bodys endurance, it also boosts the brains endur-
ance. In response to cardiovascular exercise, the bodys cells create additional
powerhouses called mitochondria. This process is not limited to working
muscles. The brains cells also create more mitochondria. As a result, the
brains ability to operate at peak levels may be extended to a greater period of
time across the day.
A habit of regular exercise will build not just the body, but also the brain. Keep
moving and keep thinking.
