Characters Remaining: 3000 Sort by: Newest | Oldest | Recommended | Most Discussed | Agree | Disagree I hope that the NDA MP's from Mumbai who captured headlines yesterday with their demand to roll back the fare raise for Suburban trains will read this report and ponder why even a prestigious train like Rajdhani Express derails and kills. Do they not know that Suburban sections suffer greater strain and run greater risk of track-fatigue than main-line sections because of greater intensity of traffic and speedier acceleration and deceleration of trains over them? Suburban sections need intensified maintenance. Maintenance of track costs much money. Money comes to Railways not through Budgetary allocation but through sale of tickets, increased revenue from which these MPs want to deny to the Railways. Chapra, the Railway Station where this derailment took place, is not far from the home of Lalu Prasad Yadav, to whom, sacrificing a national need to her need to be in power, the Chairperson of UPA gave a long innings as Railway Minister though what he was doing to the financial security of Railways was no secret. I hope the Lady reads this news and feels guilty. When North-Eastern Railway was still on Metre Gauge, it ran a Steamer service across River Sone to connect Palezaghat station with Mahendrughat on the other bank, from where one went by road to Patna Station on the Broad Gauge. When an event in Patna was expected to attract huge crowds each day for over four days and strain the Railway's capacity to check ticketless travel, I, then a man just out of College and full of ideals, suggested placing huge boxes at many suitable points to collect tickets at exit points at both Palezaghat and Mahendrughat stations, to do away with the need for Ticket Collectors at the gates. Posters were exhibited on the Steamer requesting passengers to drop their used tickets in that box. I swelled with pride when my suggestion wax accepted. Sttatistics revealed a plus- 90 % collector of used tickets from the ship. My dream of a bright career was lost on the third day when among the printed card tickets, we found a paper ticket on which a passenger had written in lovely script, " Railway kay jitney gadhe afsar hain, un sabko mera namaskar (Bihar has always been polite, even in abusing). Agar mujhe pahle maloom hota ki koi TC nahin rahega, main yeh ticket khareed-ta hi nahin. Khair. Aglee baar dekhengay. Namaskar". That Bihari may now be supporting the fare raise as sorely needed and may be buying tickets, even Platform tickets, as his contribution. It is the sense of responsibility in Legislators which has worsened. We expect support for national causes from MPs even at the cost of their popularity. That was what Modi said when he prescribed his Bitter- pills for chronically sick India. The title says that 4 people died, but the full report says that around 8 to 10 people were injured. However accident is accident. and loss of lives is regrettable. Let the Government take real measures to improve the safety of the trains and the passengers even if it may need generation of fund through hike in fare. But the job must be done in a professional way.
