authorusesaspecificliterarytechniqueortypeoffigurativelanguage.TheEGOMswe
havestudentsmarkmostoftenareexamplesofforeshadowing,flashback,symbolism,
irony,allusion,simile,metaphor,personification,hyperboleandonomatopoeia(justforfun).
Whenstudentsmarkthese,theyalsoneedtobeawareofandstarttodeterminewhyan
authorwouldusethem.ThistakesthemdeepintoAnchorStandard4focusingonCraft
andStructure.
ThereiscurrentlysomedebateintheEnglish/LanguageArtsworldonthemeritsof
providingstudentssomebackgroundinformationbeforereadingapieceofliterature.
Thereareteacherswholineuponbothsidesofthedebate.Ononeside,thereare
teacherswhoargueprovidingstudentssomeknowledgegivesthemaplatformtobuild
meaningwithouthavingtosiftthroughunfamiliardetails.Thispointofreferencegetsthem
toadeepermeaningmorequickly.Thepolaroppositesidefeelsstudentsmustwrestle
withatext,uncoveringitslayersofmeaningoneatatimeandthisprocessmakesstudents
questionthetextrereadingforclarification.
Wefallinthemiddleofthisdebate.Welovetheideaofstudentspouringoveratext,
readingandrereadingtouncoveritsmysteries.However,weteachinaschoolwheremore
thanhalfofthestudentsreceivefreeorreducedlunchmanyofthesestudentshavelimited
experiencesoutsideoftheirruralNorthCarolinacounty.Becauseofthelimited
experiencesourstudentshave,wefindbackgroundinformationtobeparticularlyhelpfulto
connectourstudentstounfamiliarsettingsandcharacters.Onceourstudentsmakea
connectionwiththeliteraturebeforehand,theirmotivationincreaseseventhoughthe
difficultyofstrugglingthroughanunfamiliartextincreases.
Toaidprereading,weoftenfindavideoclipthatgoesalongwiththebasicsubject
matterorsettingofaliterarywork.Sometimeswepairstudentsandgivethemtopicsto
researchandreportouttotheclasssoweallcanlearnsomethingonthetopicbeforewe
beginreading.Whilewehavecutbackontheamountoffrontloadingbeforereading,the
realityiswestillteachmanyreluctantreaders.Wehavecometotheconclusionwhen
studentslearnsomebackgroundinformation,itgetsthemmoreexcitedaboutwhatthey
areabouttoread.Wedonotgivetheplotawayorteachwhattheyaregoingtobereading.
Itismorelikeprimingthepump.Thispeakingofinteresttranslatesintoreadingmore
closelyandwithmoreexcitement.
Thefollowingactivitiesareexamplesofwhatwewoulddotosetthestagefor
readingSteeringTowardNormal.Wehave4Hinourschoolsandalivestockcompetition
atourlocalcountyfair.Thecountyfairisstillabigdealtoourmiddleschoolstudents.
Almosteverystudentattendsthoughnotallvisitthelivestockarena.Inordertoconnectour
studentspersonalexperiencetothebook,wesurveythemelectronicallypriortothe
researchactivitytofindoutwhichstudentsshowanimals,havefamilymemberswhoshow
animalsorhaveseenalivestockshow.Usingthisinformation,weequallydistributethese
studentsingroupstogiveeachgrouparesidentexpert.
GoingSteerCrazy!iscompletedasagroupandreportedouttotherestofthe
class.Theteachercompilestheanswerseitherinaformtobesharedwiththestudents
electronicallyoronposterpaperdisplayedintheclassroom.
InLetTheCompetitionBegin,theclasschoosessomethingtojudge.Some
examplescouldbesteersfrompictures,brownies,apples,moviestars,athletes,sports
teams,colleges,etc.(Notwogroupscanhavethesameteam,athlete,orcollegebutthe
wholeclassmusthavethesamecategory.)Onceallthestepsarecompleted,theclass
holdsitscompetitionanddeterminesitswinners.
Ifyouwanttomakearealworldconnection,inthe4Hprogramthereareovera
hundredcategoriesforcompetitionincludingart,electronics,poetry,cakedecoratingand
much,muchmore.Also,4HhasprogramsinmostcommunitiesacrosstheUnitedStates
andaroundtheglobe.Ifyoulike,therearemanyopportunitiesforyourstudentstoresearch
theirlocal4Hprogram,invitea4Hvolunteerasaclassspeakerand/orcreateaproduct
toenterintoyourlocal,regionalorstatecompetitions.Therearemanyactivityextensions
through4Hthatconnecttoothersubjectsinthemiddleschoolcurriculumandprovide
studentswithrealworldexperience.Feelfreetoexpandthisconnectionbothinyour
classroomandacrossthecurriculumwithbefore,duringandafterreadinglearning
extensionactivities.
Evenifyoudonotgenerallyuseprereadingactivities,considerusingtheBook
TrailerForeshadowingactivitypage.Wefindstudentsinthemiddlegradesoftenmiss
foreshadowinginliteraryworksbecausetheyarenotquitereadytosimultaneously
immersethemselvesinthestoryandstillretainperspectiveasanoutsideobserver.
However,foreshadowingisquitecommoninstudentseverydaylives.Movies,television
shows,commercialsandonlinevideosalmostallusemusictosetthetone,impactthe
moodandcreatesuspensethroughforeshadowing.Feelfreetoassignthestudentsthe

DebraRookhastaughthighschoolEnglish,EnglishasaSecondLanguageK12and
middleschoolsocialstudiesandlanguageartsfornearly15years.Currently,sheteaches
8thgradelanguageartsandcoachestheQuizBowlteamatChowanMiddleSchool
outsideofEdenton,NorthCarolina.SheachievedNationalBoardcertificationin2008and
willcompleteherMFAinwritingforchildrenandyoungadultsfromVermontCollegeof
FineArtsin2015.SheiscurrentlyresearchingtheRedWolfReintroductionProgram,the
LostColonyandlocalfolkloreforheryoungadulthistoricalfantasynovel.
MolliRosehastaughtmiddleschoolsocialstudiesandlanguageartsingrades68for
over20years.Shealsohassomeexperienceinthementalhealthfieldasacasemanager
andcrisislineworker.Currently,sheteaches8thgradelanguageartsatChowanMiddle
SchooloutsideofEdenton,NorthCarolina.SheachievedNationalBoardcertificationin
