Tell Mayor de Blasio and the Port Authority of NY & NJ
to STOP the SLAUGHTER of NYCs Canada Geese

USDA Wildlife Services is killing geese & their babies
in New York City parks this summer with YOUR tax dollars.
Since 2009, the USDA has rounded up and slaughtered hundreds of Canada
geese in NYC. They wait until June and July when geese are at their most vulnerable,
raising defenseless baby goslings and cannot fly. Far from being merciful
euthanasia, gas slowly strangles them as they struggle to breathe a cruel death.

Supporters claim that killing geese prevents bird strikes at airports. But
leading bird strike scientists disagree. Despite the killing of over 5,000 geese in New
York City since 2009, air travel is still vulnerable to bird collisions.

Unlike the Port Authority, many other airports around the world are
protecting aviation safety without relying on lethal methods. For instance,
Seattle-Tacoma and Tel Aviv Airports us bird-detecting avian radar tracking helps
pilots avoid collisions, and devices scare birds away with noise and lights.

Killing 1,000 geese really isnt going to do anything. If you
kill them, nature will fill that vacuum and a new species will
pop up in its place. -Ron Merritt, Principal Wildlife
Biologist, DeTect Inc. Avian Radar Company, and former
Chief for the Air Forces Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard Team

Killing animals only invites others to take the place of the ones killed, an
ineffective use of tax dollars. Its also cruel, inhumane and unwarranted.

"The real solution is for the City to make the area around
airports unattractive to birds, and to use humane methods
to scare and displace the ones that are already there."
-Ken Paskar, President of Friends of LaGuardia Airport

Facts about NYC's Canada Goose Slaughter Program

Since 2009, USDA Wildlife Services has killed more than 5,000 Canada geese
living in New York City's parks (including Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge)
USDA Wildlife Services is an out of control for-profit agency under
investigation for brutally killing more than 4 million wild animals last year.
The Port Authority of NY & NJ which manages regional airports has killed
more than 20,000 animals including protected species
New York City taxpayers have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
funding this ineffective slaughter.

Killing geese is both inhumane and ineffective
Killing or removing animals only invites others (either the same or different
species) to take the place of the ones killed
In November 2013, Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, who heroically landed the
'Miracle on the Hudson' stated that 'What happened to us... could happen
again tomorrow," in an interview with National Geographic Magazine. In
other words, years of slaughters have failed to impact the root problem.
GooseWatch NYC supports alternative non-lethal techniques, including
avian radar currently used by the US Military and Seattle-Tacoma Airport,
as well as by airports in a number of other countries, but not New York.

Toxic Goose Meat Donated to Food Banks
In an effort to spin the killing as a charitable act, USDA claims that
slaughtered geese are donated to food banks, despite Health Department
warnings about potential environmental contaminants.

Public Opposition
Local and national animal advocacy organizations have recommended the
City cancel its contract with USDA Wildlife Services, including the NYC
Mayor's Alliance for Animals, Humane Society of the United
States, ASPCA, Friends of Animals, NYCLASS, In Defense of
Animals, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), as
well as aviation safety group Friends of La Guardia Airport, the Coalition
for the Homeless, and the New York City Bar Association.
