Examination #3
Date: 5
th
June 2014
Duration: 2 hours

Total marks: 60

Examiner: Mr. A. M. Zulu

Moderator: Dr. V. S. Kamara

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

Write neatly and legibly, as illegible work will not be considered for marks. If
you are of the opinion that insufficient information was provided to solve a specific
problem, make realistic assumptions, motivate these and continue solving the
problem based on your assumptions made.

Use F.B.Ds and illustrative diagrams wherever possible.

Clearly show the reference Cartesian axes system used for each question.

Pay attention to units and show the relevant unit in each calculated answer.

No marks will be awarded for answers only. Calculations must contain a
minimum number of logically sequenced steps followed by an answer.

In cases where two or more different - and undeleted answers are given for the
same item, the right answer will not be considered for marks.

Use, where applicable, gravitational acceleration g = 9.81 m/s
2
.

Do not write your name anywhere on the answer scripts

Answer all questions.

Question 1
By direct integration, determine the x- and y- centroids of the shaded area OABO shown
in Figure Q1+4, bounded by the lines x = y
2
, x = y
3
and x = 5 {Hint: vertical element is
recommended for continuity} [14].

Figure Q1+4.

Question 2
Figure Q2 shows the centreline cross section of a volume consisting of three bodies: a
cone frustum with larger and smaller radii as 2.1 m and 0.8 m respectively; a cone frus-
tum with larger and smaller radii as 1.2 m and 0.8 m; and a hemisphere of radius 2.1 m.
Using the method of composite bodies determine the y-centroid of the composite body
[15].

Figure Q2.

Question 3
Figure Q3 shows an elliptic area OAB (elliptic quadrant). By the Theorem of Pappus,
determine the volume of revolution of OAB for the following rotations:
(a) about the x-axis through 360
(b) about the y-axis through 180 [7].

Figure Q3 (a = OC = 5; b = OA = 4).

Question 4
For the area of Figure Q1+4 (page 2), determine by direct integration the area moments
of inertia about the x- and y-axes {Hint: vertical element is recommended for continuity}
[10].

Question 5
Using the method of composite bodies, determine the area moment of inertia and radius
of gyration about the y-axis of the composite body shown in Figure Q5 {Hint: it is rec-
ommended to subdivide into 4 parts, the overall rectangle and three negative triangular
areas shown} [14].
