Assignment 3
Part A
The selected text is the simplified version of the traditional fable The Greedy
Crow. It is suitable for Standard Four students. The language is comprehensible to
the young learners since it has simple ideas, moral values and grammar structure.
The colourful pictures in the fable highlight the characters and plots, thus allow
young learners to understand the storyline. In addition, since the texts are short, and
illustrated, it will encourage students to keep reading and enjoy the story. Besides
that, the text can also be exploited for various kinds of task and interactive activities.
My teaching plans are as follow:
Lesson 1: Grammar and Vocabulary (30 minutes)
The objective of this lesson is to teach grammar which focuses on simple past tense
besides introduces new vocabularies towards students. As an introduction, I will
introduce the fable through four pieces of a picture puzzle. The selected student has
to match all the pieces and let the class guess the picture. After that, I will use
slideshow and short video to show the comparison between present tense and past
tense such as is, was, and do not, did not. Here, I will later explain about the
past tense and its function accompanies with examples of sentences and actions.
For instance, An eagle flies down to the ground, and the eagle flew down to the
ground. Next, I will demonstrate the reading with the correct pronunciation.
Afterward, selected students will read the fables and I will check their pronunciation. I
will also discuss about the moral values based on the story. In addition, in order to
increase their understanding on the simple past tense, I will provide worksheets
which students, in pair, have to fill in the blanks with the correct answer using the
simple past tense. They have to change the simple present tense to the simple past
tense. Lastly, I will give individual worksheets which students have to find the
meaning and construct sentences based on the given simple past tense words.
Lesson 2: Role-play activities (30 minutes)
The objective of this lesson is to expose the students with past tense and give
opportunity to students to practice English in the classroom. First of all, I will put two

flashcards with sentences such as Today, I eat an apple and a mango, and
Yesterday, I ate an apple and a mango. Then, a selected student will have to find
the differences between the two sentences and circle the words which are eat, ate,
today and yesterday. Later, I will explain the differences and thus introduce past
tense and its function towards students. Secondly, based on the textbook, I let
students read silently and after that they have to read it in front of the class by acting
as Mr Crow, Mr Eagle and Mr Hawk. Here, I can check their pronunciation. Moreover,
in order to enhance students understanding on the simple past tense, I divide the
class into three or four groups. Each leader of the groups has to choose one
flashcards in order to get a task. For instance, construct sentences from the given
words and pictures in past tense. Lastly, as homework, I will give worksheets which
students have to construct five to ten sentences in order to make a short story based
on the given pictures.
Lesson 3: Sequencing and Matching (30 minutes)
Next, the objective of this lesson is to teach students about past tense and help them
to comprehend the story. At the beginning, I will introduce past tense to students
through short videos or slideshows. Pictures and animation will help them to
understand the function of the simple past tense and when it is used. Later on, I will
make a clarification with making another example that relates to students daily
activities such as yesterday, I wore a uniform and I went to the canteen just now.
After that, I will continue with reading the textbook and choose students to act out the
story. In order to make them comprehend the fable, I will give printed worksheets
which the students have to rearrange the sequence of the given story. Lastly, for
their homework, I will provide another worksheets which they have to match the
correct words in past tense with the meanings.
