Each one of them (dosas) me again of five kinds (divisions) such as Prana, Udana Vyana Samana and Apana of Vata; Ashtanga Sangraha Sutrasthana Sloka 2 Panca Vata (five divisions of vata) : Prana is located in the head, moves donards to the throat and chest; attends to the functions of maintenance of intellect, sense organs, heart, mind, and arteries (veins also); functions such as e!pectoration, snee"ing, #elching, inspiration, e!piration, salloing of food and such others$ Udana located in the chest, moves in the region of the throat, nose and% um#ilicus, attends to the functions of producing speech, activities (physical movements, actions) valour, strength, co&our' nourishing the tissue pores (#y providing them nutrition); discrimination, courage, memory, aakening of the mind and such others$ Vyana located in the heart, moves all over the #ody ith great speed, attends to functions such as movement (locomotion),%e!pansion$ contraction, upard movement, donard movement opening and closing of the eyelids, yaning, feeling the tastes of food, clearing (or cleansing or (idening) of the channels (or pores), causing the flo of seat and #lood, #ringing the male reproductive tissue (semen vis a vis spermato"oa) into the uterus, separating the nutrient portion and aste portion of the food (after its digestion) and supplying nourishment to all the d)tus in proper order$ Samana located near to the digestive fire (in the stomach) kindles it, moves inside the large intestine, stomach and small intestines, channels of the dosas, malas (astes) sukra (reproductive tissue of the*mate), artava(menstrual fluid, and also ovum, the reproductive tissue of the female),and am#u +#ody fluids); supports them in their ,unctions$ attends to functions such as retaining of food, (in the alimentary tract),digestion, separation of essence and astes and moving the aste products donards and such other functions$ Apana located in the rectum- moves along the urinary #ladder, pelvis, peres$ scrotum (testes) and groin, attends to elimination of faeces, urine, semen, menstrual fluid and foetus and such other functions (.)$ Ashtanga Sangraha Sutrasthana Sloka 3 Panca pitta (five divisions of pitta): Pacaka$ /an0aka, Sadhaka$ Alocaka and 1hra0aka are the divisions of Pitta' 2hat pitta hich resides in #eteen the amasaya (stomach) and pakvasaya large intestine); though composed of all the five #hutas, yet has the predominance of 3ualities of te0as #huta and deficiency of 3ualities of ap #huta$ 4ence, it is devoid
of the 3ualities (properties) of li3uids$ 4elped #y e!citing (helping, c5operating) causes such as vata, moisture (ater) and others, it attends to the functions such as #urning and digestion, so o#tains the name Agni (fire); it digests the food, separates the essence and astes from it; remaining in its on place it supports (gives help) the other pitta, located in different places$ 2his pitta is knon as Pacaka$ Notes: Pacaka pitta described as residing in between ~amasaya and pakvasaya should be taken to mean as residing inside these organs. Though it is actually existing in the from of liquid it does not possess the qualities of !sneha or moisture and saitya or coldness which are the special qualities of liquids generally: it requires the help of other factors to carry on its functions. "t supports the other pitta and also dhatwagnis !similar substance present in the tissues #. 2he pitta, located in the amasaya (stomach) is knon as /an0aka as it imparts red colour to rasa +plasrna6 2he pitta located in the heart is knon as Sadhaka, #ecause it helps achieve the aims of life, #y attending to functions such as discrimination, intelligence, pride and enthusiasm$ 2he pitta hich is found in the eyes is knon as alocaka, #ecause it helps seeing$ 2hat hich is located in the skin is knon as 1hra0aka, for it helps e!pression of colour$ &t digests the materials used in the form of oil massage, ater*#ath$ application of paste, (poultices linaments) over the skin and reflects the comple!ion$ Ashtanga Sangraha Sutrasthana Sloka 4 Panca Kapha (five divisions of kapha) : Avalam#aka, 7ledaka, 1odhaka 2arpaka and kledaka are the five divisions of 7apha, 2hat kapha hich resides in the chest, helps the areas around the shoulders, arms and neck #y its on capacity, helps the heart #y the capacity of essence of food; remaining in its on place supports the other kapha #y contri#uting the properties of ater, is knon as Avalam#aka, #ecause of its supporting functions$ 2he kapha hich resides in the amasaya (stomach) is knon as 7ledaka, since it moistens the solid food$ 2hat hich is located in the tongue and helping in appreciation of tastes is called as #odhaka$ 2hat hich resides in the head and nourishes the sense organs is called as 2arpaka$ 2hat hich resides in the 0oints providing lu#rication to the #ones is called as slesaka$
