Orders for Forty four thousand million from abroad: this is the
results of the Cerutti Group at the Drupa 2012 Printing Media
trade fair in Dusseldorf, the main annual international event for
graphics, where exports are increasingly becoming the key to
Company development.
We are very satisfed explains Giancarlo Cerutti, Chairman and
C.E.O. of Cerutti Packaging Equipment - because during this
exhibition we havent only made negotiations, but we have signed
orders for as many as 21 machines, considering also the other
Companies of the Group - Flexotecnica and Iberica - that were
exhibiting together with Cerutti at Drupa.
We have particularly succeeded in repeating the same success
accomplished years ago with the Central Australian Bank, frst
in the world to use machines able to print plastic banknotes: we
have sold a similar line to another Company, De La Rue, which is
one of the oldest and most well-known printing frms in the feld
of security printing. This is the frst time they have integrated our
technology into their Company, and being chosen by them as
their supplier is a cause of great pride for us. I believe that this
type of technology, already used to print banknotes for instance
in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Mexico, provides great
opportunities for further development.
In the feld of magazines and catalogues printing, the order made
by Ctp Caxton, South African Media Group, stands out. It is a
sector in a phase of distress adds Giancarlo Cerutti but we
believe that a big boost to the volumes can come from the school
books area. The Aurora press, that Ctp ordered after seeing a
similar line bought by a direct competitor, is in part dedicated to
this sector. And if we look at the big developing countries and at
the strong schooling process taking place at the moment, I do
believe that it is possible to look to the future with relative trust.
Another sector, which is in a booming trend for us, is the
specialty printing one, in which I think we are acknowledged
as one of the frst choice: after very interesting lines sold to
European and American Groups for the printing for instance of
PVC for the furniture industry, for the wood grain and transfer

paper, for the cigarette tipping and gift wrap printing, we have
won another order in USA, for a press that will print and laminate
self-adhesive labels for batteries. Also in the converting feld, after
the offcial presentation of the triplex lacquering machine that
is going to be delivered to Al Invest Group, we have interesting
negotiations going on: the proof that we are considered a reliable
choice - ends Dr. Cerutti.
Cerutti Group Management too is very satisfed, and, in a few
words, defnes Drupa 2012 as: fewer visitors, but more buyers
visiting our stand with new projects to be fnalized within short/
medium period and confrmation of existing negotiations. A great
interest has been registered on the complete platform of solutions
shown at the Cerutti corner booth from new prospects.
I think our ability has been to simply foresee and anticipate the
market trends and so we presented the products visitors were
looking for! For what concerns gravure, we learned the message
that trend, in this feld, is stable while there is a clear growing
interest in the fexo technology.
We do believe that fexo, even more than gravure, will be the
technical solution that the packaging market will keep showing
growth in the coming years. Its clear, at the same time, the
growing interest in converting feld, that is so closely connected
to the printing world. Our targets are therefore: strengthening the
printing sector, both gravure and fexo, and having robust growth
in the converting feld. Drupa 2012, with about 20 contracts for
the printing of packaging and die cutting of cardboard signed
during the fair, is a great starting point for our strategy!
summarises Mr. Arturo Bergamaschino, Member of the Board of
Cerutti Packaging Equipment and responsible for the packaging
and converting unit.
We have sold lines in Far East, Middle East and Southern Europe
for what concerns gravure; for fexo we have to add also the
South American market. The winning Series, for Cerutti Packaging
Equipment, has been the R980 in its various models, designed
for fexible packaging printing, but its worth mentioning also a
complex line we have sold to China for the tobacco industry, and
new interesting presses that we will delivery to Turkey, a country
which is in a booming period.
Most likely we have been the Group that in both the gravure and
fexo felds has presented the widest and most diversifed product
range: solutions not only for the traditional packaging world,
but for specialty markets too and also the die cutting, with our
subsidiary Company Iberica, has done very well, with orders
signed in Europe and Middle East.
I think we went beyond the traditional borders of a printing
equipment manufacturer, with solutions for instance like the one
for the in-line colour matching; our strategy today is to carry on
providing integrated products to both traditional and specialised
niche markets.
Summer 2012, Issue 5 4 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
Also the platoon of Italian frms return from Germany with many
orders and this reinforces the optimism for the economic outlook
abroad in this sector, despite Europes diffculties and the risk of
a hard landing for the Chinese economy.
The survey carried out by some category associations amongst
companies in the sector shows that 35% of the entrepreneurs
report an increase in foreign turnover abroad and expect this
growth to continue into the second quarter, while only 22% of
them predict a drop. Similarly for the orders concerning export,
where there is an expectation of growth in the second quarter
according to 39% of the cross section, against a pessimistic 13%
that foresee a decline in volumes.
According to the fgures, Drupa closes its doors with visitor
numbers reduced by 19% with a total of 316 thousand, even
though the comparison has been made with June 2008, just
before the big world crisis triggered by the fall of the Lehman
Brothers. We are talking about different worlds explains
Drupas Director Manuel Matar and for example, the I-pad
didnt exist 4 years ago. However the balance from this edition
is strongly positive, businesses received a lot of orders, visitors
came from 60 countries with a higher percentage of professionals
and decision-makers; some Groups, like Cerutti for example,
defned this edition as the best one ever.
In the future, some adjustments will have to be made, in particular
on the duration of the trade fair, fxed for 2 weeks. For the
exhibitors this is an enormous investment, in some cases over a
million euros, with the added burden of having to stop or to slow
down their entire business in order to be able to attend the event.
We are aware explains Matar that times have changed and
we have to adjust too. Incredibly serious discussions on this
aspect are taking place and I think that the next edition wont last
more than 10 to 12 days.

ALBERO BAUM
The tree of future
An important Italian artist, Corrado Bonomi, created an
artwork especially for the Cerutti Group stand: a sculpture
made by materials printed and converted by Cerutti presses
For the occasion of the Drupa 2012 fair, an important Italian artist,
Corrado Bonomi, was commissioned by Cerutti to provide an
artwork installation with the purpose to beautify and decorate the
image and the products that the Group will show at the fair.
The three-dimensional tree, 5 metres high, can be considered as
an allegory of the Company, its activity and its history.
The trunk and the branches were realized with a wooden
structure, covered with packaging materials printed and
converted by Cerutti machines. An eclectic artist, Bonomi always
proposes unpredictable installations, poised between the game,
the improbable, the ironic and real.
Corrado Bonomi was born in Novara the 20th of March of 1956.
As soon as he fnished artistic studies, he dedicated himself to
his human and professional formation until 1982, year of his frst
exhibition. Since then he has participated in many expositions
elaborating his own artistic language.
In 1995 he joined the group Concettualismo Ironico Italiano
(Italian Ironic Conceptualism), created around the Falzone Gallery in
Manheim. From 1997 collaborated actively with the Museum
A come Ambiente (E as Environment) of Turin, where he realised
a catalogue-handbook Animali e Fiori nascono da... (Animals and
fowers are born from...), a didactic and creative way to reuse waste
materials. In 2003 he was invited to join the exhibitioncompetition
of the Foundation VAF at the Exposition Building of Mathilnhole
in Darmstadt. He has worked a lot in Germany, with collectives art
exhibitions in Mannheim, Aschaffenburg, Darmstadt while in Italy he
is active in Milan, Parma, Trento, Livorno and Mantova.

CTP Caxton maintains its competitive advantage with the
acquisition of Cerutti Aurora press. On the frst day of Drupa
2012, the Offcine Meccaniche Giovanni Cerutti S.p.A., the unique
manufacturer in the world of rotogravure presses for magazines
and catalogues printing, and CTP Caxton Group Limited, a
leading publishing and printing group in South Africa, are pleased
to announce the acquisition of a new Cerutti rotogravure Aurora
by CTP Caxton Group.
The Aurora press commissioned by CTP Caxton Group is
equipped with a groundbreaking post-press folding confguration,
that is a frst in the South African market.
Ultimately this advantage is to the beneft of our clients as this
investment in machinery is to better serve the needs of an ever-
evolving domestic market. With the folding equipment installed
on the Aurora press we will be able to accommodate even the
most creative requests from our clients, comments Mr. Moolman,
C.E.O of CTP Caxton Group.
The Aurora press with its new 7/7 lower folder embodies the most
modern and effcient rotogravure press offering from Cerutti.
The long cut-off folder allows the Aurora press to achieve very
high production speeds to increase production effciencies in
mid-sized, low-grammage print runs. Im extremely pleased
about the agreement we have reached with Mr. Terry Moolman
and his organisation over the new investment in its production
capabilities. Such an order represents a further acknowledgement
of the great production effciencies achieved through our Aurora
press, comments Dr. Giancarlo Cerutti, Chairman and C.E.O. of
Cerutti Group.
The continued support from our clients has amplifed our drive
to further invest in a market-leading Cerutti Aurora press with
unaccustomed fnishing possibilities that not only increases
our effciencies and capacity but ultimately benefts our clients
business. It will ensures a sustainable growth for the CTP Caxton
Group, its stakeholders and communities, concludes Mr.
Moolman.

Riccardo, as the Team Leader of this new colour
matching project, are you satised with the work you
have just presented at Drupa, your software Iristart?
What targets do you think you have attained for
the end users?
Regarding the work we did, I can say that I was already
satisfed before Drupa, as I was convinced from a number of
tests in our R&D Centre that we were able to obtain important
technical achievements. Now, at the end of Drupa, Im even
more satisfed: Iristart received excellent feedback from
end users, and it was very important for me to discuss the
project details from a technical point of view with numerous
customers. This in principle means, due to high variability in
packaging applications, also different possible variations within
the same concept we have developed.
These technical discussions were extremely useful in obtaining
a realistic response that the printers believe this project can
really help them.
Can you please briey explain how Iristart works
and how it performs?
Iristart is a software that we have developed in order to
integrate, within the press controls, an in-line measuring of the
printed colours.
Monitoring the absolute values of the colours printed during
production is a very important issue for our customers, to
provide a quality certifcation of the printed products, but
lets say, from our point of view this is the easy part of the job!
The real goal of our project is to increase effciency at the start
up, that is a key point for our end users!
This is not the frst project Cerutti has developed to help
printers during start-ups: after a number of solutions for
automatic changeover, the development of automatic wash-
up system for printing cylinders and ink pans, and after the
optimisation of the procedures for auto-preset in register
control, it was a logical consequence to attack the large
quantities of waste that is connected to colour matching
activities at the start-up. Due to the high number of different
products that can be produced on our packaging presses,
it is diffcult to summarise in few words the savings coming
from the installation of our software - in general every specifc
production environment needs to be individually evaluated.
Just from our frst reference point: we can say Iristart is able
to reduce by 50% the waste connected to colour matching
activities, both in term of time lost and in term of wasted
material. We are completely open to support our customers, to
explain details of our software and to help them in making their
own computations, in term of savings that can be achieved
thanks to Iristart: lets say that results can be surprising!

We are pleased to ask
some questions to Mr.
Riccardo Montagnini,
Cerutti Packaging
Equipment Innovation
Manager, whos in charge
of the organization of the
Vercelli R&D Centre and
responsible for the Cerutti
colour matching project,
called IRISTART.
Summer 2012, Issue 5 10 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
To which markets is Iristart targeted?
Basically we do not see any limitations, as one of the main
points we got from Drupa is that everywhere in the world
color matching procedures are seen by our customers as the
problem to be solved in the area of waste reduction.
So Iristart is not a complicated product that needs to
have an in-depth knowledge of the subject? It can
also be used by entry level printers?
I want to summarize Iristart in few words: making printing
easy for the operators! For sure one needs to understand how
the software works and what boundary conditions are needed
to have the best possible performances, but the fnal result
achieved by our software is to reach an optimum operator
friendliness, so basically from this point of view I do not see
any limitations depending on the printers skills.
Have you got already installations of Iristart?
For over a year now we have been doing our homework in
the R&D Centre in Vercelli, and just before Drupa we agreed
for our frst installation that is now completed. And so
Yes, Iristart is already working! I am confdent that it will be
possible in a few months to unveil sensitive details about
Iristart, showing its frst feld results. We now have a number
of discussions open with new potential customers and I am
confdent new installations of the equipment will follow shortly.
What do you think is the difference or the
advantage Cerutti is able to provide with Iristart
against its competitors?
First of all, let us defne our competitors! Basically we are
not competitors of companies who have the technology of
measuring colours and computing colour differences: this is not
our core competence.
Our core competence is to control the printing process, taking
into account a number of measurements carried out on the
press, including the in-line spectral measurements. Iristart was
developed to automatically control all the press parameters
at the start-up, in function of the colours currently printed on
the press and the colours to be printed. For sure we still need
to move several steps forward to reach the dream of closing
the loop. But, on the basis of the number of discussions I
had during Drupa, I am truly convinced we are in a very good
position with respect to our competitive press manufacturers,
considering both the level of the integration of the colour control
within the press and the friendliness to the operators of the
equipment. In two words I think we are really fast and easy!
Summer 2012, Issue 5 11 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
Mr. Bergamaschino, how do you evaluate Drupa 2012
for the printing and converting sectors? Did you
notice a good number of decision makers visiting
the show? Which markets and areas have been more
dynamic?
In a few words we could defne Drupa 2012 as: fewer visitors,
but more buyers visiting our stand with projects to be fnalized
within short/medium period and confrmation of existing
negotiations. In addition to that, we have registered a great
interest on the complete platform of solutions shown at the
Cerutti Group booth from new prospects: we can say we are
very satisfed! The most dynamic areas have once more been:
Asia Pacifc - Great China included and the Middle East - the
market that has given such good results for the past two years
and continuing on a very positive trend.
In your opinion which have been the main attractions
of this edition? What trends do you think are going to
be a must?
I would surely say: digital printing in its various forms and
expressions and the packaging feld that, just as importantly,
has overtaken the role that at Drupa was held by commercial
printing; we have no doubts about the ongoing expansion of
packaging and consequently of its printing and converting.
Very attractive and evocative was the show at Benny Landas
stand, about his new vision on the Nanotechnologies applied
to digital printing: we will see in the coming years if this will
mark a real revolution or not.
We have read that the fair has been really positive for
the Cerutti Group, in terms of orders won and
contracts signed: what do you foresee in the future?
What are the strategies you have currently adopted?
I think our ability has been to simply foresee and anticipate
the market trends and so we presented the products visitors
were looking for!

about the fair
Summer 2012, Issue 5 12 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
For what concerns gravure we learned the message that
trend, in this feld, is stable while there is a clear growing
interest in the fexo technology.
We do believe that fexo, even more than gravure, will be
the technical solution that the packaging market will keep
showing growth in the coming years.
Its clear, at the same time, the growing interest in converting
felds that is so closely connected to the printing world.
Our targets are therefore: strengthening the printing sector,
both gravure and fexo, and having robust growth in the
converting feld.
Drupa 2012, with about 20 contracts for the printing of
packaging and die cutting of cardboard signed during the fair,
is a great starting point for our strategy!
Can you mention the markets where you sold the
most, and which ones have been the most successful
models of your platforms?
We have sold lines in Far East, Middle East and Southern
Europe for what concerns gravure; for fexo we have to add
also the South American market.
The winning Serie, for Cerutti Packaging Equipment, was the
R980 in its various models, designed for fexible packaging
printing, but its worth mentioning also a complex line we have
sold to China, for the tobacco industry, and an Aurora press
for publication printing we will deliver to CTP, South African
Media Group. Also other signifcant niches are in a positive
trend now; I can mention for instance the security market
together with other interesting applications in printing, sectors
in which Cerutti know how has proven to be the winning one!
Nowadays... who hesitates is left behind! Do you
consider the technical solutions launched at Drupa
have had a positive feedback? Where do you expect
to improve and what are the new projects for
the future?
Most likely we have been the Group that, in both the gravure
and fexo felds, has presented the widest and most diversifed
product range: solutions not only for the traditional packaging
world, but also for specialty markets, such as wood grain
printing or transfer printing. I think we went beyond the
traditional borders of a printing equipment manufacturer, with
products like the in-line colour matching; now we want to
carry on providing integrated solutions to both traditional and
specialised niche markets.
Summer 2012, Issue 5 13 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
Claudio, Drupa 2012 has just closed its doors,
with huge success for Flexotecnica: you have
announced eight machines signed in
Duesseldorf! What is now your outlook for
the future, and your strategy?
Drupa 2012, the most important printing exhibition has just
ended and it is now time to report about it. No doubt, it has
been the most successful ever since: a signifcant number of
signed contracts and double digit hot prospects highlighted
Flexotecnicas participation in this huge expo. What is even
more exciting it is the fact that 80% of all our visitors were
new companies approaching our staff attending the exhibition
and asking for the latest solutions sold to converters that they
had heard excited comments about recent investments in
Flexotecnica new solutions.
Moreover 70% of the companies who signed the contracts
were multinational Groups, with very high reputations,
expecting from their selected supplier deep technological
competence, evident technical know-how, consolidate
company organization, proactive customer support attitude
and cogent company strategy, all targets that Flexotecnica
is focused on, which the market recognizes as a must have
for companies aiming to succeed in the current and future
competitive market scenario.
Flexography has surely been one of the trends of
this Drupa, being a printing process undergoing huge
expansion. What is Flexotecnica strategic position in
this moment of growth for the flexo sector?
Part of the exceptional Flexotecnica sales volume growth is
due to:
1. Complete product range revision
2. Internal organization redefnition to comply with
the new company strategy.
3. New markets penetration where Flexotecnica was
previously inactive.
Flexotecnica in the last three years has been consistently and
continuously increasing in sales volume, and turnover, but
what is more important is the consequent growth in effciency
and thus proftability. In terms of sale volume we are not at
the level of our biggest competitors, but considering the sales
increase in percentage since 2008, we are fully satisfed,
proud of the excellent results and thanks to the numerous
positive feedback from all customers we met during Drupa.
We are confdent to continue along the track from where we
started, pursuing our mission which is to promote, design
and implement technical solutions for fexible packaging
converting, assuring proftable eco sustainable processes
under social and ethical responsibility.
Some questions to
Mr. Claudio Bisogni,
Flexotecnica C.E.O
Summer 2012, Issue 5 14 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
How do you evaluate in general Drupa 2012?
And how was your new machine EVOX, presented
on the stand, welcomed by your visitors? You have
announced this new line as very innovative.
Flexotecnica took advantage of Drupa 2012 and presented the
latest news; the most remarkable concept from Flexotecnica
is to meet the most demanding customers expectations, in
terms of maximized production output, best product quality
and highest proftability. Even the best machine alone is not
enough, in fact in such a market where competitiveness is at
its highest level, the detail, and even more the perfect blend
and compliance of them which makes the difference.
In order to make the Flexotecnica message more effective,
we decided to use the four fundamental elements for our
AD campaign, such as: earth, fre, water and air; in fact as
their presence preserves the universes equilibrium, which
corresponds to the overall absolute best, we are convinced
that every customer needs a dedicated solution, composed by
different elements, far beyond the machine itself; that is why
we have classifed our solutions into four branches:
PRODUCT (represented by the earth, the blend essence)
corresponds to two new machine families: EVOXD 6-8-10
col. and EVOXG 8-10-12 col., 400-700mpm speed range
and 800-2500mm width range; both models to print with
solvent / water based inks and on request with UV and EB
inks.
INNOVATION (represented by fre, the spark which
generates breakthrough), corresponds to our INNOVATION
PACK, a list of fully integrated solutions for matchless
productiveness, i.e.:
- A.R.F and A.I.F for fast and accurate register
and printing pressure setup at virtually 0
waste.
- FLEXCOLOR MATCHING, the new solution for
colour set up, available either in-line and
off-line.
- T.Q.C. Tools Quality Control system: we call it
The Sentinel, as a preventive quality check of
parts to be used on the machine which
guarantees consistency with repetitive jobs,
and assures a signifcant reduction of waste,
downtime and machine wearing.
ADD-ONS (represented by the water, a must in nature to
get evolution headway), correspond to a list of solutions
which make the difference in terms of investment payback,
i.e.
- CI Drum Cleaner.
- Self adjustable wash up.
- OPTIFLOW, the new ultra effcient drying
system.
Summer 2012, Issue 5 15 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
- H.E.P: High Effciency Pack which is composed
by use of components guaranteeing minimal
electricity and thermal power consumption.
SUPPORT (represented by the air, the element enabling
in nature consciousness human being evolution); it
corresponds to SUPPORT PACK, a series of :
- PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMMES.
- LOCAL SPARE PARTS STOCKS and CRITICAL
PART KITS availabile on request with different
delivery timing.
- A.B.C (Aid By Clicking) via an Internet spare
part ordering procedure.
- 24/7 After-Sales Service.
The four branches are part of the T.Q.R.P. Total Quality
Review Program and represents FLEXOTECNICAs approach
to the market; thanks to these dedicated solution packs,
FLEXOTECNICA is today recognized as a top class equipment
manufacturer, as well as forefront supplier for high-end
converters.
Summer 2012, Issue 5 16 - Cerutti Group Newsletter
Massimiliano, are you satisfied following this Drupa,
for the die cutting sector in general, and for your
Company in particular?
I think Iberica played a key role and were a highlight of Drupa
2012. The great performances of our exhibited machines
at the show produced large audiences in the Cerutti stand
several times per day during the entire two weeks of the show.
Which new technical advancements did you launch?
At Drupa 2012, IBERICA AG rolled out solutions that included
new printing mark register, new automatic Non Stop feeder,
new quick lock devices, new sheet transport based on the
VARIOPLA SYSTEM and we presented advanced solutions
to our potential customers. The technical solutions exhibited
consisted of two automatic die cutting machines, model
SPEED K 105 with Blanking Separation and SPEED 105 with
stripping unit.
All IBERICA existing customers as well as new potential
prospects expressed great impression of our new technical
solutions launched at the show. Our goal was to show the full
potential of the new machines, improved optional equipment,
shortened make ready times and quicker job change over.
What positive feedback have you received, also
in terms of lines sold?
The target for Drupa was fully accomplished which included a
number of sales during the show in addition to the generation
of many strong leads as a direct result of the signifcant
number of attendees that spent time on our stand during
Drupa checking out the new technologies offered.
It was very rewarding to be able to show new improvements
and see them so positively received by visitors to our
stand. We are thrilled with the positive feedback from all our
customers and we thank them all for their trust!
