JULY BIRTHDAYS
Join us for the monthly
Senior Center Birthday Bash
Celebrating a birthday in July? Visit the
Romulus Senior Center at Noon on Monday,
July 21, for the monthly Birthday Bash.
Barbara Underwood was among those
celebrating at the June Birthday Bash.
Everyone in the game room enjoyed the
birthday cake, which was provided by Wayne
County Commissioner Kevin McNamara.
Happy July! I hope you are having a great summer.
I always enjoy visiting the Romulus Senior Center,
seeing all the smiling faces and listening to your
concerns and hearing the nice things you say about
your city government. I hope you enjoyed last months
Flag Day celebration, ice cream social and the
Celebrate Summer luncheon as much as I did.
The warmer months have been both busy and fun in
the City of Romulus. In June, we were able to reopen
Elmer Johnson Community Park, which provides a
place for recreation, relaxation and picnics. Then, the
annual city fireworks went off with plenty of oohs
and ahhs.
Thanks to everyone who helped get the park ready
in time for the grand reopening. Special thanks to
Romulus steel company Lee Steel for providing the
funds to pay for the fireworks. We can do more with
community participation.
To those of you who are participating in the upcoming
Senior Olympics, I want to wish you the best of luck
in your competitions and Im looking forward to
seeing you wearing your medals and hearing the great
stories of how you won them.
See you soon!

Flag Day at the Senior Center
Romulus veteran honored
during Flag Day ceremony
Clarence Mahon will turn 81 years old on July 12.
The Romulus senior said the events of June 13 will
stay with him the rest of his life.
Clarence was the recipient of an American Flag
from members of the Romulus Veterans of Foreign
Wars during Flag Day festivities outside the
Romulus Senior Center.
Today was something that I wont forget, he said.
I wont forget this until the day I die. It was a
thrill standing with soldiers and shaking hands with
World War II veterans. Its just great.
Clarence served two stints in the U.S. Army in the
1950s. He was originally drafted to serve during
Korean wartime, but was not called to serve
overseas.
In fact, Clarence was one of four Mahon brothers
who served his country in the military. Older
brother Darrell and youngest brother Michael also
served in the Army. Another older brother Zane
served in the Air Force. All three have passed away.
Born and raised in Dearborn, Clarence has lived in
Romulus for four decades. He married wife Mary in
1959. The couple met at Fort Leonard Wood in
Missouri. Clarences sergeant, Elton Waite, was
Marys father.
Clarence and Mary have three children Heather,
Lisa and Pat, eight grandchildren and three great
grandchildren. Most of the family members still
reside in the area.
Besides his experiences in the military, Clarence
worked for Wabash, Norfolk and Western and
Norfolk Southern railroads out of Melvindale. He
broke his leg while getting off a boxcar in 1988 and
took a medical retirement when the leg didnt heal
properly.
During the Romulus Flag Day festivities, members
of the VFW raised and lowered the flag outside the
Senior Center, then replaced it with a new flag. The
old flag was presented to Clarence. The VFW
members repeated the flag ritual at the Senior
Towers across the street.
I was proud, Clarence said. Its the United
States flag. If you dont love it, leave it.
Sounds in Downtown, a series of free summer
evening concerts, continues with musical
performances in July and August at Romulus
Historical Park, 11147 Hunt Street.
The Rick Lieder Band will perform Margaritaville
and Bob Marley-type music on Friday, July 11.
Mark Harrington will perform a variety of music,
including dance, Top 40 and country, on Friday, July
25.
The Rusty Wright Band will perform rock and blues
on Saturday, August 8.
The concert series is sponsored by the Romulus
Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the
Romulus Arts Council, the Greater Romulus
Chamber of Commerce and the City of Romulus.
Spectators should bring lawn chairs, blankets and
picnic baskets for the evening at the park. Early
