EWSD - System Description

1.0 Introduction :
The Department of Telecommunications had announced ambitious plans for
the addition of 7.5 million lines to the existing 5.8 million by the end of the 8th plan
(199297! as compared to only ".2 million in 198292.
#onse$uent upon delicensing of the Telecom. e$uipment and thro%ing it
open to foreign in&estments' six ne% technologies %ere planned to be &alidated.
These foreign suppliers set up their &alidation exchanges' each of 1('((( lines

*iemens (/ermany! at #alcutta' 01-1( of -ricsson (*%eden! at 2adras' 3etex

-.*D is one of the technologies selected for T01 and is also the
technology for 8ntelligent 9et%or: and 2obile #ommunication. This article gi&es a
general introduction to the -.*D system' its features' architecture and facilities.
2.0 System Features :
-.*D Digital s%itching system has been designed and manufactured by
2;s *iemens' /ermany. The name is the abbre&iated form of /erman e$ui&alent of
-lectronic *%itching *ystem Digital (-lectronische .heler *ysteme Digitale!.
-.*D s%itch can support maximum 2'5('((( subscribers or <('((( incoming'

a&ailable features and the actual callmix. 8t can %or: as local cum transit exchange
and supports ##* 9o.7' 8*D9 and 89 and ?5.1 features.
3.0 System Architecture :
The main hard%are units of an -.*D s%itch are as under@

EWSD System Description
3.8 Units -o$ Message t$ans-e$ #a$t (MTP) o- CCS:;
The ##8TT standardiCed signaling system 9o.7 (##*D7! is one of the
systems that is used for interexchange signaling in -.*D. To promote flexibility in
the use of this system a distinction is made bet%een a message transfer part (2T>!
and the user parts (+>!. The user parts &ary according to the specific application
(e.g. T+>@ telephone user part' 8*D9+>@ 8*D9 user part' 2+>@ mobile user part!.
The common 2T> functions in an -.*D exchange are handled by the common
channel signaling net%or: control (##9#! or *ignaling *ystem 9et%or: #ontrol
(**9#!. The +> is incorporated in the soft%are of the rele&ant AT/.
(a) Co,,on C<annel Signaling &etwo$! Cont$ol (CC&C)
0 maximum of 25B common signaling channels can be connected to the
##9# &ia either digital or analog lin:s. The digital lin:s are extended from the
AT/s o&er both planes of the duplicated s%itching net%or: and multiplexers to the
##9#. The ##9# is connected to the s%itching net%or: &ia t%o 8 2bps high%ays
(*D#@ ##9#!. 6et%een the ##9# and each s%itching net%or: plane' 25B channels
for each direction of transmission are a&ailable (25B channel pairs!. The channels
carry signaling data &ia both s%itching net%or: planes to and from the AT/s at a
speed of <B :bps. 0nalog signaling lin:s are lin:ed to the ##9# &ia modems.
3or reasons of reliability' the ##9# has a duplicated processor (##9>!
%hich is connected to the #> by means of similarly duplicated bus system. The
##9# consists of @
+pto "2 signaling lin: terminal (*8AT! groups' each %ith 8 signaling lin:s and
7ne duplicated common channel signaling net%or: processor (##9>!.
The functions of the ##9# depend on its position in a signaling lin:. 8n the
originating or destination exchange in associated signaling' it operates as signaling
end point (*->! and in transit exchange in $uasiassociated signaling' it operates as
a signaling transfer point (*T>!.
The ##9#' e$uipped in one rac: can handle upto B8 signaling lin:s.
-$uipments handling upto 9< signaling lin:s can be e$uipped in additional rac:s.
