FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STAN WISCHNOWSKI NAMED VICE PRESIDENT, NEWS OPERATIONS FOR

THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS AND PHILLY.COM

PHILADELPHIA (July 1) Interstate General Media (IGM) Interim Publisher H.F. Gerry
Lenfest announced today that effective immediately Stan Wischnowski has been named Vice
President, News Operations of the parent companys three publications, The Philadelphia
Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com. Wischnowski has been serving as The
Inquirers Executive Editor since May 2012. In this newly created position, Wischnowski will
report directly to Lenfest and will lead all three newsrooms in formulating their strategic plans,
budgets and staffing. Wischnowski will also serve as the primary liaison between the three
newsrooms and their interaction with the publishers office, in addition to IGMs marketing,
advertising and legal departments.
Stan brings a broad and deep wealth of experience to this important position and has
demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout The Inquirers newsroom in a variety of
senior positions, said Lenfest. I have been most impressed by Stans oversight in the
development of important, topical news and information sections that highlight The Inquirers
award-winning reporting and provide an important resource for the Philadelphia region on
topics ranging from health to real estate. Stan will see that each of our iconic brands will
continue to evolve in meeting the needs of readers, while always providing an exceptional
platform for our valued advertisers.
The Inquirer has won two Pulitzer Prizes in the past three years under the leadership of
Wischnowski and Inquirer Editor William Marimow. Most recently, the newspaper was
awarded the 2014 Pulitzer in the category of criticism. During Wischnowskis tenure as
editor, he helped lead the paper to the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for public service.
My primary goal is to inject a stronger sense of urgency in everything we do, develop a
stronger spirit of innovation and collaboration, and ensure that all three newsrooms maintain
their distinctive identities, said Wischnowski. With 300-plus journalists we need to make
sure our journalism is relentlessly interesting, relevant and timely.
Under Wischnowskis direction, The Inquirer has most recently created a new Sunday health
section, an expanded real estate section, and a weekend section devoted to life at the
Jersey Shore. Stan was also instrumental in the 2013 launch of the paid website,
Inquirer.com and the implementation of the newsrooms first performance management
review system.

Ive worked with Stan since 2007, said Inquirer editor Bill Marimow, and he understands, as
well as anyone Ive ever worked with, the inextricable linkage of excellent journalism to
producing a vibrant, viable business. His leadership in The Inquirer newsroom and throughout
our company has been invaluable.

In his 30 years in the news business, Wischnowski, 52, has held a wide range of newsroom
management roles at The Inquirer as well as at the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and
the Detroit News. As Executive Editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, he co-managed the
newsroom and served as a senior executive of IGMs operating committee with
responsibilities for all facets of strategic planning, content development, legal affairs, and
budget oversight.
Wischnowski was the Deputy Managing Editor for The Inquirer, prior to becoming the
Inquirers editor in 2010, and was responsible for overseeing the entire night operation, co-
managing the newsroom budget, and representing management in contract negotiations
with the union that represents the newspapers journalists. From 2002 to 2008,
Wischnowski was responsible for overseeing the front page and the production of all
sections of the paper.
Before arriving at The Inquirer in 2000, Wischnowski was a top editor at the Rochester
(N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle (D & C). He started there as the Page One editor, and was
eventually elevated to Assistant Managing Editor and then to Managing Editor. Under his
leadership, the D&C was recognized as one of the Gannett Companys top performing
newspapers for three straight years.
Wischnowski is a 1984 graduate of Western Illinois University and resides in Doylestown with
his wife. The couple has three grown children.
