When students come to music class (and band) prepared to listen, and participate with a
positive attitude, they will learn the required music concepts no matter what level of
music aptitude they may have.

But, when a students behavior, attitude and participation in class does not conform to
music class and school rules, it disrupts the ability of the teacher to teach, and disrupts the
ability of the learners to learn.
It is for these reasons that the music grades are based solely on the behavior, attitude, and
active participation of the student(s) as well as the adherence of the music class rules, and
also that of our schoolwide rules which include the uniform policy. These rules are to
ensure a safe environment and an optimal atmosphere conducive to learning. Failure to
comply with these rules will result in my issuing the student demerits.

Each demerit is equal to one percentage point of their music class grades as charted on
the front page graph. Grading will be strict but fair and will increase in severity per
quarter.

All students begin with a grade of “E” at the beginning of each quarter, and it will be up
to that student to maintain their grade at that level. The parents or guardians will be
notified of any drop in grade either electronically of by a note in their Tuesday Folder.

Quarter 1 – In the first quarter, and mainly for new students to our school, everyone will
be given warnings and will be reminded of school and class expectations. Demerits will
only be given to repeat offenders. Demerits and/or Conduct Referrals will be given for
any form of physical and/or verbal abuse as deemed necessary by the teacher.

Quarter 2 – One demerit will be given for each infraction. A student will sometimes not
be warned that they are receiving demerits if it will disrupt teaching the rest of the class.

Quarters 3 and 4 - Three demerits will be issued for each infraction. Conduct Referrals
will be issued to repeat offenders. By the third and fourth quarters of our school year, the
students should be well aware of their expectations.

Every effort will be made to help minimize the accumulation of demerits ranging from
changing the seating arrangements, to isolating and/or removing the student from the
class if necessary.

Uniform violations are strictly enforced by me, in and outside of music class, as they are
a part of both my music class rules and the school rules. Students are expected to be in
the proper uniform for the entire school day. Demerits will be issued to each incident of
a uniform violation, and as such will be a part of their music grade, regardless of whether
they received the demerit in music class or anywhere else in school.
