Answers and Explanations

1-F, 2-B, 3-D, 4-C, 5-A, 6-E. Erysipelas is characterized by the presence of a painful
red rash with a sharply demarcated raised border. Varicella is characterized by the
presence of pruritic lesions in all different stages of healing. Herpes zoster is
characterized by a blistering rash in dermatomal distribution. One of the characteristic
features of scarlet fever is linear petechiae in the skin creases. Impetigo presents as a
honey-colored, crusty, vesiculopustular rash. Scabies is marked by erythematous
burrows in the web spaces of the hands.

7-B, 8-E, 9-D, 10-A, 11-C. Erysipelas is an infection of the superficial skin
lymphatics. Scabies is associated with poor hygiene conditions. Candida is
characterized by overgrowth of normal flora. Cellulitis is an infection of the dermis
and subcutaneous tissue. Impetigo is an infection of the superficial layer of the
epidermis.

12-G, K; 13-B, C, D, G, K; 14-C, D, E, F; 15-E, I.; 16-A, H, J, L. Pediculosis and
scabies are caused by parasitic infestation. Intense pruritus is a feature of eczema,
atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, pediculosis, and scabies. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis,
seborrhea, and pityriasis rosea are treated with corticosteroids. Nonpruritic rash is a
feature of seborrhea and herpes zoster. Stevens-J ohnson syndrome, toxic epidermal
necrolysis, severe pemphigus, and pustular psoriasis are all potentially life-threatening
conditions that require hospitalization.
