How to Make and Read your own
Runestones

Runes, like Tarot Cards, the I-ching and Playing Cards are another form of divination. I have a
number of sets of runestones and my very first set is the most precious. It was a gift from my sister
who lives near the coast and she had made them for me.

Runes are letters in an ancient alphabet, a writing system used by ancient Germans and in Old
Norse, rune means text, letter or inscription. The exact history of the runic alphabet is not
certain and there are at least three man varieties of runic script. Early Germanic (used in northern
Europe before 800 AD, Anglo-Saxon or Anglian (used in Britain from around the 5
th
century) and
Nordic or Scandinavian (used from 8
th
century in Scandinavia and Iceland).

The runic alphabet has been used in coins, stones, jewellery and artwork through the centuries. The
runes are believed to have mysterious powers (some believe the Druids used ruins as a form of
divination) and they continue to be used, to this day, as a way of gaining insight into a situation.


How to make your own Runestones

Making your own runestones can be a fun project for you and your family. Finding and creating your
own runestones means you are putting your own energy into this venture and once made, you have
a source of divination that will help you see into the past, present and future.

There are a number of ways to make runestones and I will keep this simple. Firstly you need to find a
place where you are able to find stones: a walk on the beach, by a river or stream. Now look for
stones that are fairly similar in size and shape. You need 25 stones and this will include the blank
rune (some people dont use a blank rune, I do. Its up to you). At home, wash them and leave them
outside to dry.

Some people use a dremel tool to inscribe the stones but this is not always necessary. Mine are
painted and are 20 years old and still fine. Use water-proof paint of whichever colour you choose
and a fine paintbrush and carefully copy each of the following symbols onto one of the stones.
Allow to dry and then once dry coat each stone with a clear acrylic varnish to protect it.

Your stones are already empowered with the element of Earth, having come from the Earth, from
Water having been washed (as well as being found by the sea or in a river) and with Fire from the
warmth of the sun. Once the varnish is dry, you might also pass each stone through incense smoke
to empower them with the element of Air.

You might make a small bag for your runes or purchase a one already made.

You are now ready to read your own runestones.


Making your own Runes with Cards

I also have a set of rune cards which I use when doing my readings and there is no reason, if you
cannot find any stones and still want to try experimenting with rune readings, why you cant make
your own cards. Designing your own Rune Cards can be both a spiritual and meaningful exercise.

To do this you need sheets of card, pencils, scissors or a craft knife and a can of protective spray to
coat your cards.

You might want to read about the meanings of each symbol to get a feel for the symbols. As well as
drawing the rune symbol on each card, you might add its name and draw an illustration of what each
rune means to you.

Making your own runetones, either on stone or with cards will tap into your creativity and your
imagination. So, gather your supplies, start creating and have some fun.


Rune Stones Explained
What Are Runes and How Are They Used in Divination?
In recent years there has been renewed interest in the magical and spiritual powers of the Runes. It
is a word often heard, but many people wonder what they are.

The Runes are a sacred and magical alphabet which was used by the ancient people of Northern
Europe, associated particularly with Scandinavia and Germany. Originally, Runes were used for
magic spells and rituals, and runic symbols would be carved into swords and shields to increase their
magical energy.

Later, the runic alphabet was developed as a form of writing and although it was eventually used for
practical purposes such as inscribing grave stones, the Runes were also considered potent symbols
to be used for divination. The word 'Rune' is derived from the old Norse language and means 'secret'
or 'enigma', which implies that the real mystery of this ancient runic system might never be fully
revealed.

Casting Runes ~

Many of the old Rune masters made their Runes themselves, carving them out of wood, stones or
leather. If they were consulted to give a Rune reading they spread the Rune stones on the ground;
stones that landed with the runeside up were interpreted. The Runes have never lost their mystical
quality.

According to Norse legend, the spiritual power of the Runes comes from their mystical and magical
origins. The god Odin is said to have received the symbols from divine sources after hanging upside
down from a cosmic tree for nine days and nights without food or water. On the last night, as he
peered down into the Underworld, he observed the Runes and snatched them up, stealing them
away.

Legend says that from that time on he had the power to raise the dead and could call forth the
occult secrets of the underworld by carving the relevant characters. A great magician, Odin had the
power to free the human mind from fear and hesitation, and presided over magic, inspiration and
journeys.

Traditional Uses of Rune Stones ~

Traditionally, Runes were used to cast spells, heal the sick, protect sacred sites and essentially, to tell
the future. The secret knowledge of the symbols was passed on to Rune masters who would make
their own Runes out of stone, wood or leather, staining them with magical preparations.

Since that time, Runes have been consulted the whole world over by those who need to find their
true direction in life.


Rune Diary/Workbook

As with Dreams, the Tarot and other studies, we suggest you keep a Rune diary. You might use this
for:
Recording your meditations on the runestones
Making notes of the meanings of the runes and what they mean to you
Making notes of your own readings (remembering to date these) so you can look back on
these and compare them with events going on in your life
This also helps you become more familiar with your runes.

Remember as with all forms of divination, your runes can be used to give insight into a situation. The
future is not written in stone, not even these stones. You make your own choices and you have the
freewill to change your own path.

Sometimes the advice given in the runes is not always clear. It may be vague. You may not know
whether it relates to the past, present or future (this can all be blurred when tapping into the
universal unconscious). Sometimes you will instantly understand the message in the runestones
trust your intuition.


Reading the Runes

The runic or Futhark alphabet is made up of 24 runes, dvided into three groups of eight runes . Each
group is called an Aett or aettir (plural). Each aett bears the name of the god assocated with the
furst rune of the group. Each aett is related to a particular teaching and every rune is linked with the
others in its own group.

First Aett: Feyr/Freyias Aett. This first group of runes represent, fertility, nurturing, life-force and
how these are represented in human life. This group is associated with the awakening of the
consciousness.

Second Aett: Heindalls Aett. This group represents the material world and how man participates in
this world. It is the intermediate world between man and the gods. This group is associated with the
development of the consciousness towards the discovery of the higher-self.

The third Aet are Tyrs Aett. This group links the relationship of man with the world of divine spirit.
They are runes of Fate and spiritual transformation.

1 Fehu / Feyr

Runes are small stones, each one engraved with a letter from the alphabet of the dark-age German
speaking people. Along with a blank rune, there are 24 rune symbols altogether. The rune Fehu
represents fertility, financial security and abundance. What can you expect if you have chosen this
rune for a reading?

Fehu or Freyr can be linked with material wealth and possessions but it also signifies a time when
you may feel a strong need to understand your thoughts and feelings ~ in other words, to get to
know your true self better.

When this rune represents material possessions, what it is saying is that currently, there IS ability to
gain in some way. Money is on its way and there will also be opportunities presented to you which
will make you a more successful person. How you use such status and such opportunities is,
however, important. You'll have heard of the saying 'pouring money down the drain', well this is
something to bear in mind in the future. Success and money will come to you but the question is:
will you keep it? To do so, this Rune suggest that you should be cautious before taking risks and look
for ways of making your money work for you. Don't be careless otherwise you could well lose, all
that you gain.

The herb associated with this rune is the Nettle. Nettles can be used in soup and in healing. It can
be beneficial but remember: the nettle stings and can also cause pain.

You are entering a period of personal growth if you have chosen this rune. And in order to make the
most of this, it is recommended that you deliberately seek out times of silence and solitude. You
can't get in touch with your inner-being ~ your subconscious ~ if you're constantly active especially
in a social way. I think however, that you will recognise this need for calm and quiet in order to
progress.

You must be modest, no matter what your personal achievements might be. There may be every
reason to feel proud, but try to be satisfied through having done something to the best of your
capabilities. This is not a time to seek rewards or flattery.

You will soon be travelling down new roads and the experience these give you will be significant.
You will start to discover your real talents and your personal limitations.


If Fehu is the Rune that has been chosen for you in a reading, it is representative of good fortune as
well as material possessions and the good things in life. This is a lucky omen, just be sure to keep
everything balanced and in moderation. Use your common sense but at the same time, enjoy your
good fortune.

2 Uruz

Rune reading is an ancient system of fortune telling, stemming from Scandinavia. The special
symbols in each rune are believed to hold hidden depths of information about your past, present
and future.

And should you have chosen Uruz for a reading, what might you expect?

This rune is related to the Element Earth in astrology, suggesting practicality, material wealth and
strength. Indeed, there is a lot of energy here but it's almost like it has to be tamed if you want to
achieve anything positive. Could it be that you're going in a number of directions with no particular
destination? Have you found yourself in a rut and you just don't know what to do to get out of it?
Well, this Rune tells you that you must become focused and you must channel all that wild energy
into something concrete and positive. That is the way you will move forward and although it might
take some time. You will soon feel a benefit through planning, determination and organisation.

Uruz also points to your approach to social and humanitarian matters. It could be that you are
currently working on behalf of a Charity and if so, you might expect pleasing profits. Not only this
but others will let you know that they appreciate your hard-working efforts. If you aren't working in
such areas, it could be that you will achieve a lot of satisfaction if you were to look for ways in which
you could involve yourself in associations that are of a charitable or humanitarian nature.

Are people making too many demands on your time? Is there not a moment in the day that you can
call your own? It will be important to retain a degree of independence, assert yourself and be firm
about your need for privacy. This IS a time when you'll be working hard with, or on behalf of others
and you will get a huge amount of satisfaction through this. But you must also consider your own
needs in the midst of all the activity. It is time, I think to consider the future. Decide on fresh goals
or, alternatively, make a firm decision to reach the aims you have set yourself in the past.
Determination, patience and persistence is needed if you want to see results.

Finally, I must add, with regard to this rune, that partnership ventures are favoured. But again, no
matter what type of venture - business, friendship or marriage, you mustn't let yourself become fully
absorbed by this partnership. Don't lose touch with the 'real you'. Hold on to a degree of
independence.


3 Thurisaz

The Runes is an ancient method of fortune telling and the symbols on each Rune are said to help you
understand why you are going through certain phases and how you might approach life in more
positive ways. If you have chosen Thurisa for a reading, this is what you might expect.

The third rune is a rune of communication, signifying the possible receipt of important
correspondence or 'phone calls. ~ Even a gift. To focus on this latter meaning I'm not necessarily
talking about a material or financial gift. Sometimes someone can put a few well-meaning words
your way that will eventually have strong consequences on your life. A work-mate may pull a few
strings for you to help you up the success ladder. Such gifts are often worth more to you than the
material kind.

There is someone who is in your everyday life who can offer you some wise and useful advice.
Perhaps you're the type of person who prefers to make up your own mind. Maybe you don't like to
be swayed by the views or opinions of others. But where there is a degree of confusion, or where
there are questions that need to be answered, this rune tells you that you might find ease of mind
through talking things through with someone you know, from past experience, you can trust and rely
on.

It is also possible that new opportunities are likely to come from out of the blue. This rune doesn't
exactly give you the chance to get used to certain ideas. It throws things at you fast and furiously,
bringing unexpected and exciting happenings into your life.

This rune is called Thorn and there are two sides to the thorn. It can be painful should it scratch you,
but the thorn has a protective element to it as well. It protects the delicate rose flower from harm.
This suggests that you must prepare yourself for minor problems and setbacks ~ those frustrating
scratches from the thorn ~ but you should not let these deter you from your aims. What's a few
little scratches? You must arm yourself with the determination to succeed.

For there is confidence here and leadership qualities too. You might soon, I think, find yourself in a
position where you have some control or authority over others. Be sure to use this wisely. In love,
there may be a possessive streak rearing its head and I'd advise you to keep in touch with your
partner's needs and feelings. Good communication will help keep any suspicions at bay.


Finally, this rune tells you to be adventurous. Maybe you don't like the thought of change, but
nothing is static, all things are subject to fluctuation and it's likely that a flexible frame of mind will
help you cope with ~ and even enjoy ~ the opportunities that are opening up ahead of you.

4 Ansuz

The word 'rune' means secret and the twenty four runestones, each with its own character, has held
mystery over people throughout the centuries. I shall now describe what you might expect if you
have chosen Ansuz.

The fourth runestone rules over order and stability. It is a rune of wisdom and in astrology, it is
associated with the planet of communication. Mercury rules over speech, writing, conversation and
communication and therefore I get the impression that messages, meetings, interviews, letters and
phone calls will hold a degree of importance at this time.

This is Odin's rune. Odin is the god of divination, poetry, magic and inspiration. Odin is the god who
introduced us to the runes; his mystical powers releasing the potential of these symbols for humans
to understand. His rune therefore suggests that this is a time when you too, may receive wisdom
through experience. Where Odin made sacrifices to tune into Universal energy and receive the
secrets of the runes, you might also find yourself having to make sacrifices in order to advance in
life. These won't, however, be regretted.

According to this rune, you might soon be receiving a gift. Now this may be through an inheritance,
or perhaps antique items which have been passed down through the family now come to you. Also,
if there have been a few money problems lately, then these will soon ease.

Family matters will be harmonious, especially if lately it's been difficult to see eye-to-eye with one
another. Now's a good time, therefore, to resolve misunderstandings of the past.

If you're thinking of selling your home, or you're looking for some property to buy, then this is an
excellent time for such transactions.

The fourth rune strongly hints at you leaving old ways behind. You'll be embarking on new paths
and this will ultimately mean the end of relationships and links with the past that are no longer
necessary in your life. It will no doubt be hard to let go. But at the same time, you can't expect to
gain in experience if you don't recognise your personal capabilities. Perhaps you've reached a time
of maturity when you must recognise a growing need for independence.

Finally, could I suggest that if you're uncomfortable about something in your life, or you feel
confused about which path to take in the future, don't hesitate to approach an older relative. Help
and good advice can be received by an elderly person who has seen it all before.

5 Raido / Raitho

If you are experimenting or interested in the Runes and how the symbols are interpreted, this is the
meaning of Raido or Rad.

This rune, Rad, represents wheels, circles and journeys. It can be associated with the Wheel of Life
in the Tarot. The journeys this rune speaks of can be physical, through travel or even moving on and
doing something different with your life. Or it can be spiritual where you will be developing the
inner-self.

You see, change is indicated by the fifth rune stone. Rather like the effects of the planet Pluto in
astrology, the old and outworn must be ended, in order for new and more worthwhile ventures to
begin. When you suffer loss, it isn't always easy to accept that this is necessary in order to
experience new gains. You will go through a time of solitude or despondency even, before you're
ready to progress. Progress, however, is the word when this rune appears.

Lots of energy is apparent here. And if you channel this in the right directions, you will be able to
accomplish some worthwhile projects and fulfil ambitions. Change will eventually bring an
increasing sense of optimism, and the changes I'm talking about here, are more in the way of
broadening your horizons and expanding your existing assets rather than total transformation.

If you're hoping to climb a few more rungs up the career-ladder then it is suggested that your hopes
will soon come true

Changes occur: you might be thinking about moving out of your home, attending college, applying
for a new job. Life never remains static and in order to develop spiritually, emotionally and mentally
people move forward. Education, experience, travel and/or new relationships all go to form a part of
life's learning cycles. When this rune is cast, you might expect life to soon present you with just such
opportunities to develop and grow. .

What is needed, wherever there is change, is for you to be willing to take that first step down new
paths. Often this is the hardest. Once you've made your mind up and the process has begun, you'll
become swept along by the tide of change and I think you could really get to enjoy this. Don't swim
against the tide as this would only waste energy and slow down progress. Be prepared to relax and
don't be afraid of change.


Life is full of cycles: beginnings, middles and endings. The wheel of life is now turning, according to
the rune Rad when it is cast in a rune reading and you're about to begin on a new and exciting


6 Kenaz / Kaunaz

There are twenty four rune stones (not including the blank rune) and these help form the ever-
changing pattern of life, tapping into Universal energy. Each rune has a symbol and if you have cast
Kenaz or Kano for a rune reading, this is what you might expect.

The sixth rune stone is a symbol of imagination and creativity. There is energy here too as it is
associated with the planet Mars. Mars, along with the Sun in astrology, is a planet of Fire and
power. Mars is the fiery, northern warrior sky god. It represents energy, inspiration, initiative and
impulse. When I speak of inspiration, this can come in the form of coming up with new ideas to
solve old problems. Or, perhaps, a flash of insight to help you shed light on matters in your life
where there has been darkness.

When the rune Kano is cast, this suggests that happiness and success will soon be yours. You should
be enjoying a pleasing and profitable time and there is (or soon will be) a reason to celebrate.

You might also expect good news from overseas and this is bound to please you. It could be that you
can now look forward to a reunion with someone you've not seen for some time. You will be sharing
time with creative, enthusiastic people. Social events will be fun and friends are in high spirits. You
might join in with sporting activities, either as a competitor or a spectator.

Lady Luck is sitting on your shoulders. You might receive an unexpected gift, a money surprise, even
a small win.

The sixth rune suggests that things are going on behind-the-scenes and in the background of your
life. If therefore, you're feeling a little down, don't get too disheartened. No matter how frustrated
you feel about certain obstacles that have plagued you in the recent past, something WILL occur at
the eleventh hour to provide the silver lining to this dark cloud. There will be a new sense of
freedom when past restrictions and responsibilities will no longer confine you.

If it seems as if you can't find your way, this rune will light the path ahead and very soon you will no
longer feel as if you are walking through mist.

This should be a generally positive time for you but there's also a need to channel your energies
wisely. Look towards your most important aims in life and try not to let past successes blind you. -
There are more to come in the future. - Enjoy.


7 Gebo

The runes are small stones, each one engraved with a letter from the alphabet of the dark-age
German speaking people.

This is how to interpret the seventh rune, Gebo if it is cast in a rune reading.

Gebo is a runestone that represents talent, gifts and sensitivity.

I mention the word sensitivity and I hope that, in your dealings with others during this important
period of your life, you are sensitive to their opinions, general views, needs and feelings. For, on the
opposite side of this same coin, or rune should I say, there might be a tendency to be over critical or
to say things to others without realising that this might have upset them in some way.

When this rune is associated with romance, it suggests a need to be more cautious in your approach
to your partner. There is a lot of passion but this borders on the verge of possessiveness. Someone
might start to feel trapped by all this strong feeling. There must be space in order to allow this
relationship to breathe.

In everyday matters, this rune, Gebo, suggests you ought to be careful in important dealings and
prepare yourself to take one cautious step at a time. Cutting corners in order to rush things along
may lead to some regret. Don't be tempted to take the easy way out. Insist on making a careful
and thorough job of all that you do.

In money and business matters, risky schemes should be avoided, no matter how exciting and
profitable someone is making them sound. There may be some impatience to get started on exciting
new projects but haste can lead to careless mistakes. The moral here is "the more haste, the less
speed" - slow down!

Patience, sensitivity to other people's feelings, tolerance of those who you may not always
understand can all be learned through the experiences you are going through at this time. In
consequence, you will come out of this phase a better person.

This rune, Gebo, deals with constraint. It helps you to accept your limitations. Delays will occur and
there will be a need to re-evaluate the worth of certain plans. You must look deep into your self.
Use any pause as a way of getting in touch with your true needs. Have you forgotten what these
are, in your past haste? If so, now's the time to put things right.


8 Wunjo

The word 'rune' means secret and the twenty four runestones, each with its own character, has held
mystery over people throughout the centuries. If you have chosen Wunjo for a rune reading, this is
what you might expect.

The eighth rune, Wunjo or Wyn, is associated with harmony, balance, joy and fulfillment. Harmony
comes through balance and this occurs both in nature and in human affairs. Relationships that are
equal, where sharing is on fifty-fifty terms are harmonious. This rune helps you build on this
element of your relationships and other affairs of your life. You will recognize when it is time to give
and when it is your moment to receive. Where there is balance and equality, there will by joy,
happiness and fulfillment. You must balance the positive with the negative.

To explain this further and if ever you feel as if things are getting on top of you, or delays are
blocking your progress, it will be necessary to curb any negative feelings. You might be preying too
long on matters of the past. Nostalgia can sometimes be pleasant but it doesn't do you good to live
in the past. Nor to regret things that can no longer be changed. What you should now do is look
ahead with fresh optimism. Think of all the positive things you want out of the future.

Through this, why don't you start planning and making long-term arrangements? Even look to new
directions if need be. You needn't stay as you are, forever.

When this rune is associated with your love-life and close relationships, it suggests a need to move
forward. Possibly there has been a tendency to get 'stuck in a rut' as it were. You are following old
habits and your relationship may perhaps lack the spark it used to have. There is still enjoyment
through each other but this rune suggests that you might look for new avenues that you both can
share in order to enrich your union.

The eighth rune, wunjo, points to new paths. This rune gives you the strength of mind to clear the
decks, ready to move on to something new. - No matter how strong the opposition! - It's vital that
you tie-up loose-ends and clear away anything of the past before embarking on new journeys.
Nonetheless, if wunjo has been cast in your rune reading, it looks as if there is going to be a few
changes in store for you, very soon.


9 Hagalaz

The Runes contain symbols that might help people understand the different phases they are going
through. If you have chosen Hagalaz for a reading this is what you might expect.

Hagalaz is a rune which can sometimes signify change but if this is so, then it could be that the
changes that occur in your life at the moment, aren't of your making. And because of this, it is not
so easy to deal with them. It could also be that you weren't altogether prepared for certain things to
happen they way they have done. And you're now left with many 'why?s' going around your mind.
Were certain things meant to be or where might you have gone wrong?

The answer now, is to look to the future and to put the past behind you. And of course, in order to
find more fulfillment in the future, you must be prepared to work for it. Things won't happen
overnight and not everything will be easy. Prepare yourself for the stumbling blocks that may litter
your path ahead and feel confident in your ability to overcome these.

For the ninth rune, Hagalz, strongly hints that you may be feeling frustrated by these obstacles that
litter the path ahead of you. If only things weren't so difficult. You may be feeling impatient to get
on and you can't understand why things are proceeding so slowly. But let's analyze the situation,
shall we?

Some things in life don't come instantly. A time of waiting is necessary in order to allow things to
develop naturally. It takes years for a tree to grow strong enough to become a mature part of the
forest or for its wood to be of commercial value. There's an old saying: "A watched pot never boils"
and the situation you're currently faced with is rather similar. You must be patient and wait for
things to develop slowly and naturally. It's no use trying to rush them along because your efforts
just won't make that much difference. Just wait, and things will eventually start to happen.

Now why might these obstacles be in your way? Well delays and hindrances could be beneficial to
you in some way according to this runestone, Hagalz. Maybe you must start to develop the art of
patience and persistence? This is an important time for you because believe it or not, you'll be
developing a more mature acceptance of life and its limitations through these experiences.


10 Nauthiz

The tenth rune, Nauthiz represents inner need and self-illumination. If you have chosen Nauthiz for a
rune reading, this is what you might expect:

The runestone Nauthiz suggest that you have reached a stage in your life when you must delve deep
within yourself in order to move forward. Consider the goals you set for yourself in the past. Are
these still important to you or suddenly, do you realise that they are no longer as challenging or
exciting as you originally expected.

Could it be that you were expecting too much from yourself and you realise that certain goals can
never be reached and it's time to bring these down to more attainable levels? Is there a need,
therefore, to set yourself towards new aims and desires?

This rune, Nauthiz, suggests that you will be more in tune with your own personal limits. You will
know just what you are and are not capable of. This means then, that your future will be more
fulfilling in that you will be putting effort into those areas where you know you might make most
achievement.

Also, if you're in doubt about anything or if there are uncertainties in your life, this runestone
suggests that you might find guidance from an older, mature person. This person may be a
professional, or just someone you know and trust. However, his or her advice will be worthy of
serious consideration.
