"One day... there would come a time, when the earth being ravaged and polluted,
the forests being destroyed, the birds would fall from the air, the waters would
be blackened, the fish being poisoned in the streams, and the trees would no lo
nger be, mankind as we would know it would all but cease to exist" - See more at

This is how the Rainbow prophecy begins, as retold by a woman of the Cree Indian natio
n of America over a century ago.
The Cree are one of the largest groups of the First Nations Native Americans in
North America. There are over 135 bands of Cree living in Canada, with a total p
opulation of approximately 200,000 today.
The Rainbow prophecy, as it has come to be known, refers to the keepers of the l
egends, rituals, and other myths that will be needed when the time comes to rest
ore the health on Earth. It is believed that these legendary beings will return
on a day of awakening, when all people will unite and create a new world of jus
tice, peace and freedom, and they will be named the Warriors of the Rainbow. They will
reteach the values and the knowledge that has been lost in time, demonstrating
how to have wisdom and extra-perception, and how unity, harmony and love is the
only way forward.
The rainbow reference relates to the different colours of the original people:
"At the beginning of this cycle of time, long ago, the Great Spirit came down an
d He made an appearance and He gathered the peoples of this earth together, they
say on an island which is now beneath the water, and He said to the human being
s, "I'm going to send you to four directions and over time I'm going to change y
ou to four colours, but I'm going to give you some teachings and you will call t
hese the Original Teachings and when you come back together with each other you
will share these so that you can live and have peace on earth, and a great civil
ization will come about."
Prophecy as told by Lee Brown of the Salish Tribe at the 1986 Continental In
digenous Council, Alaska.
A particularly interesting part of the prophecy relates to the choosing of leade
rs. According to the story, a leader will not be the one that talks the loudest
, boasts of successes, or has the support of the elite. Leaders will be those wh
ose actions speak the loudest, the ones that have demonstrated wisdom and courag
e and have proven that they work for the benefit of all. Isnt this how things shoul
d be?
The Rainbow has always held special significance among the different Native Amer
ican Indian Nations. It is connected to the Spirit (Supreme God/Creator) in all
things. Apart from the Cree prophecy there are many prophecies and stories from
the Hopi, the Zuni and the Cherokee related to the rainbow warriors.
"There will come a day when people of all races, colors, and creeds will put asi
de their differences. They will come together in love, joining hands in unificat
ion, to heal the Earth and all Her children. They will move over the Earth like
a great Whirling Rainbow, bringing peace, understanding and healing everywhere t
hey go. Many creatures thought to be extinct or mythical will resurface at this
time; the great trees that perished will return almost overnight. All living thi
ngs will flourish, drawing sustenance from the breast of our Mother, the Earth.
The great spiritual Teachers who walked the Earth and taught the basics of t
he truths of the Whirling Rainbow Prophecy will return and walk amongst us once
more, sharing their power and understanding with all. We will learn how to see a
nd hear in a sacred manner. Men and women will be equals in the way Creator inte
nded them to be; all children will be safe anywhere they want to go. Elders will
be respected and valued for their contributions to life. Their wisdom will be s
ought out. The whole Human race will be called The People and there will be no m
ore war, sickness or hunger forever."
Navajo-Hopi Prophecy of the Whirling Rainbow
"In the time of the Seventh Fire, a New People would emerge. They would retrace
their steps to find the wisdom that was left by the side of the trail long ago.
Their steps would take them to the elders, who they would ask to guide them on t
heir journey. If the New People remain strong in their quest, the sacred drum wi
ll again sound its voice. There will be an awakening of the people, and the sacr
ed fire will again be lit. At this time, the light-skinned race will be given a
choice between two roads. One road is the road of greed and technology without w
isdom or respect for life. This road represents a rush to destruction. The other
road is spirituality, a slower path that includes respect for all living things
. If we choose the spiritual path, we can light yet another fire, an Eight Fire,
and begin an extended period of Peace and healthy growth."
Grandfather William Commanda, Circle of All Nations Prophecy of the Seven Fi
res of the Anishnabe, From Ancient Wampum Belt
While Wikipedia would have people believe that the legend originates in a 1962 b
ook titled Warriors of the Rainbow by William Willoya and Vinson Brown, the reality is
that the prophecy is ancient, passed down as oral history over many generations
. Brown, himself, admitted that his research came from the Hopi prophecies, and
the book has been criticised as an attempt to evangelize with the Native America
n community by relating the prophecy of the Rainbow Warriors to the Second Comin
g of Christ.
References to a new Era, a Golden Age characterised by harmony, stability and pr
osperity, do not just belong to the Native Americans, but can be found in myths
and legends from all over the world. It is known as Chryson Genos in Greek myth
ology, the Kali yuga in Vedic and Hindu culture, and gullaldr in Norse mythology
. One aspect that is common among many legends of the Golden era is the return
of beings or gods that will aid in the restoration of the Earth.
In classical Greek mythology the Golden Age was presided over by the leading Tit
an Cronus. In some version of the myth Astraea, also ruled. She lived with men u
ntil the end of the Silver Age, but in the Bronze Age, when men became violent a
nd greedy, fled to the stars, where she appears as the constellation Virgo, hold
ing the scales of Justice, or Libra.
Whether these prophecies are true or not, much of what is spoken about the era of
greed and violence is a reality throughout much of the world today. Corruption, g
reed, poverty, consumerism, power to the few, and injustice are predominant char
acteristics of our civilization accompanied by a great technological advancement
that has become a weapon for mass destruction and a tool for supressing resista
nce. Whether beings from the past will interfere or not, one thing is for sure,
life cannot continue in this way forever.

the concept of a "mother earth" is a new idea...its been said that if people spe
ak of this term to turn away as they don't know whay they are talking about or a
re repeating what htey heard while on a camping trip or fishing trip or at powwo
ws or where ever...The first and only reference that is recorded to the mother e
arth concept is in a book that is credited to Black Elk of the Sioux. In it the
author or writer of the book says black elk mentioned a mother earth. Other than
that "quote" there is no knowledge of a mother earth in any of the native teach
ings across canada. Being native i have been searching for truth and when this n
ew concept came into being around the 80's and more momentum in the 90's was gai
ned, i soon realized that people are repeating things that they heard and do not
give credit anymore to where or why or who they heard it from..today the younge
r people want to be heard so they hear terms like this and in repeating it it al
so gives them more credibility, so it seems to them, in the larger white society
...as this is what the white society wants to hear...it makes the speaker seem m
ore aware of their culture and gives the listener the idea that they know someth
ing...they do not know anything...in our native language..be it Blackfoot, Cree,
Dene, Ojibway...there is not a single way or word in those languages that can c
ome up to make the term, mother earth...language for us defines who we are as a
people...it makes up the world around us...it lends credibility to whoever speak
s it..whether it be in prayer, conversation, communicating to children or the el
ders...no one can take away the meaning of our words..and if we cannot say thing
s in our language..then it doesn't exist...as we have spoken our languages since
time immemorial and mother earth would of been in our lexicon, since its not th
ere...its a new concept..even when people are asked to say mother earth in their
language..they cannot....so...when i hear mother earth being spoken or referred
too...i know not to listen or read anymore...

Before the printing press was invented, people 'read' pictures
before people read pictures they knew the words
before people made up words, they observed the thing
there has never been a shred of proof that no one ver observed andything for con
tless generations before making up a word for it
is a silly conjecture that I thing couldnt be known and loves as a part of 'Is"
without there being a word for it
interpreting the past from what is presently known again

I am not sure whether you are particularly looking for reference to the exact ph
rase "mother earth" or for something that references that concept. The concept m
ost certainly exists, and there is evidence showing it goes back at least 20,000
years or more. So by no means is it a "new idea".
However, I am no historian of Native North American traditions, so I can't comme
nt there. But I can give other examples, that would suggest it's highly UNLIKELY
the Native North American's had no concept of the mother of creation, and of th
e Earth as a Motherly Being. Perhaps you are saying that as far as you can ascer
tain, it's a "new idea" within Native North American cosmologies?
In New Zealand, the Maori refer to Papatuanuku. That's the Earth Mother in their
language. It dates back thousands of years.
The Kogi people of Columbia (a pre-Columbian civilisation still intact today) re
fer to the Mother in a vast array of manifestations. One of those is the Mother
of the Earth. But for them, pretty much everything has a Mother. Mountains, lake
s, species, the Sun, etc, and everything is born out of a the Mother. Their very
existence is dedicated to the Mother. They also refer to the creative dimension
or "mind" of the Mother... called Aluna.
Elsewhere in the Andes there is the recognition of Pachamama, the Earth Mother.
In India there are a multitude of references to the Mother aspect of creation. T
he most cosmic or vast is Gayatri, the Mother of all Creation. Shakti is a refer
ence to more of an Earthly creative mother energy. There are other references to
o.
Early Christian ideology also referred to the Mother. Not specifically "Earth Mo
ther" but most certainly a Divine Feminine aspect of Creation.
Even the English word "matter" comes from the Greek and Latin word matar, meanin
g Mother. This is reflective of a culture that related to the Earth and the phys
ical dimension as a mother.
Earth in Greek is 'Gaia', which also refers to a feminine Goddess deity.
Throughout Slavic, Scandinavian, European, Middle Eastern, etc. cultures are a p
lentitude of names and references to the Earth Mother. Screeds of them, actually
.
The word Terra, which we use to refer to Earth, is Roman for a Goddess who is th
e personification of the Earth.
The exact term "Earth mother" in the English is attributed back to at least 1904
, as a literal translation of German 'erdmutter', which refers to a Goddess that
is the source of Life.
As for Canada and North America? Well, as I said... I am not an expert on such t
hings. But in light of what I have just shared above, I would be VERY VERY surpr
ised if they somehow the vast number of tribes that once lived in those regions
were collectively one of the only ancient cultures to be oblivious to the notion
of the Earth Mother.

Another piece of a puzzle that teaches me that the Indians of the Americas were
spiritually intelligent nations and not primitive as we have been educated to be
lieve and are still so inclined to think today.

seems so silly to me that so many think a concept never existed untill it was re

What I find interesting with the American Indian civilisation is that they were
a 'Drum' culture - similar to tribes in Africa - messages, warnings, announcemen
ts were transmitted by drums - everybody was included - there was no secrecy, un
like the Kings, Popes and rulers in Europe. Which in turn begs the question "Why
the secrecy" - which leads one to assume whatever needs to be kept secret must
be wrong in some way- otherwise why hide it? From the reaction in the "West" to
the revelations of Manning, Snowden et al, this would indeed appear to be the ca
se.

maybe i need to expand on one point...mother earth, in those 2 words...in most i
f not all the dialects of the different peoples of canada..we do not have words
that make up the concept of, mother earth...the words do not exist...so if the w
ords don't exist in our native language..how can we have a concept of something
we don't know anything about..there was a belief and still is for some...the sun
, symbolically, is the father....the moon is the mother...earth is..earth...some
thing we live and it provides food for us...the creator made what is on earth ad
n as the creator made it, so lives the spirit of the creator in all that is his
creation...thats what we respect...his creations on this we call earth...
google... CBC ideas mother earth Maureen, and listen to a documentary regarding.
..mother earth...please...
