How Do Hairs Grow? The success of all hair removal methods depend on the growth stage that the hair is in. The hair growth cycle has three stages: Anagen - The active growth phase of hair follicles. Catagen - A short transition stage that signals the end of the active growth of a hair. Telogen - The resting phase of the hair follicle. This is when the hairs begin to fall out naturally. In order for long term reduction or permanent removal of hair to occur treatments must be conducted when the hair is in the anagen stage. This is when it is still connected to the dermal papilla. During this phase the hair grows about 1 cm every 28 days. The amount of time the hair follicle stays in the anagen phase is genetically determined. (Scalp hair stays in this active phase of growth for 27 years). If the hair is treated and it is in the catagen or telogen stages the hair will grow back and the treatment will need to be repeated. There are two types of excessive hair growth: hypertrichosis seen in males and females, and hirsuitism seen in females only. Hypertrichosis is an abnormal amount of hair growth on the body: generalised hypertrichosis, occurs over the entire body, and localised hypertrichosis, is restricted to a certain area. Hirsuitism is when the growth of body hair on a female appears in the male pattern (for example chest, back, lip and chin). Hirsuitism is related to the level of androgen hormone in an individual. Excessive hair growth can be caused by increased androgen levels and can hereditary or can be attributed to many causes such as stress, hormonal changes, PCOS or even certain medications. In the case of women, each life stage (puberty, pregnancy and menopause) can effect hair growth. For these reasons it is hard to predict the exact time it will take to achieve complete hair removal of a given area. Men with unwanted hair are more likely to achieve quicker results or at least within a more relatively predictable time frame.
Waxing At Violet Adair we have always chosen to use traditional hot wax - our in-house experts are famous for it. It is a hygienic and hypoallergenic wax method formulated from beeswax with added camomile and rose, ideal for the most sensitive types of skin. A pink putty-like textured wax is applied in thin, even layers. The comfortable warmth if the product penetrates deep into the skin to open the hair follicles and allow the product to attach itself closer to the root of the hair shaft. This ensures cleaner more effective removal, and promises not to break the hairs or damage the follicles in the removal process. The hairs return evenly and softly within their natural growth cycle. Threading - an ancient method of hair removal that has long been popular in many Arab countries, Indian and Persian culture. In more recent times it has gained popularity in Western countries. A pure, thin, twisted cotton thread is rolled over areas of unwanted hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing, where single hairs are pulled out one at a time, threading can remove an entire row of hair, resulting in a straighter line. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) - This treatment uses the latest advance in pioneering variable pulsed light technology to offer long lasting and permanent hair removal. Variable settings allow us to treat various hair types found all over the body, from thick underarm to ner facial hair. Short safe controlled pulses of ltered light are absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. The absorption of light produces heat in the follicle that destroys its ability to regenerate. Hundreds of hair follicles are destroyed with each pulse ensuring large areas can be treated safely, quickly and effectively. Electrolysis - This treatment targets individual hairs by inserting a thin sterile needle into the hair follicle. A current is applied which destroys the dermal papilla (the germinating cells) by stimulating a heat or a chemical reaction within the follicle. For those scared off by the thought of needles: the needle is only entering the follicle - the skin is not being pierced, therefore the client should not feel the use of a needle - only the current that is being applied. Transdermal Electrolysis (TE) - This is a comfortable type of permanent hair reduction without the use of needles. A number of hairs can be treated at once. The area of unwanted hairs is waxed or threaded rst to remove the hairs from the follicle and therefore the area is left clean and smooth. An electrically charged gel is then applied and probes transmit a galvanic current through the gel and into the hair follicle. A chemical reaction occurs that dissolves the cells that cause the hairs to grow. Termapil (galvanic) - This treatment uses a galvanic current to push a hair growth inhibitor product into the skin. First the hair is professionally removed via waxing, threading or tweezing. The hair growth inhibitor product is immediately applied and massaged deep into the skin using a positively charged galvanic current that increases the action of the product. The exposed hair germ cells are attacked with anti re-growth ingredients which when used regularly will reduce the hair growth. After Care Cool The treated area can be red and warm for a few hours after treatment some swelling may occur. If this is uncomfortable you can cool the treated area with a cold press or annel. Do not use ice. This can cause an ice burn. Astringent Witch Hazel and tea tree oil may be purchased at Violet Adair for antibacterial and astringent use. Apply for 24 hours post treatment.
