Thi' ca'e 'tud/ 2a' carried out at "M3, 2hich i' a large, public uni4er'it/ in northern Thailand that
re5uire' 'tudent' to complete 1our integrated+'kill' E-) cour'e' The cour'e de'cribed in thi' article i' the
1ir't in that 1our+cour'e 'erie' The Engli'h department 1acult/ decided to re4i'e the cour'e, 2hich
pre4iou'l/ 1ollo2ed a '/nthetic '/llabu' 2ith a 1ocu'+on+1orm' approach, a1ter the Thai go4ernment made
Engli'h a re5uired 'ub6ect nation2ide and promoted it' u'e 1or international communication At that time,
the go4ernment al'o decided to empha'ize the u'e o1 Engli'h to rai'e learner'( a2arene'' about their o2n
culture 'o that the/ could 'hare their kno2ledge about Thailand 2hen communicating 2ith people 1rom
other countrie'
The team de'igned the ta'k '/llabu' around three ta'k' that targeted the learner'( intere't' and rai'ed their
a2arene'' o1 regional 'ocial and educational program'7 $a& appl/ing to an international cultural e8change
program, $b& attending a /outh 'eminar about 'ocial and en4ironmental a2arene'', and $c& propo'ing a teen+
oriented program 1or an Engli'h+ language tele4i'ion 'tation



Each ta'k re5uired appro8imatel/ nine 90+minute cla'' period' to complete and culminated 2ith a 2ritten
report and an indi4idual or group oral pre'entation :n addition to the t2o 90+minute cla''e' per 2eek,
'tudent' al'o completed an online 'el1+acce'' module Ho2e4er, during the pilot te'ting pha'e, the team
decided to increa'e the amount o1 in+cla'' time to t2o %9+minute cla'' period' and mo4e the online module
to the 'econd cour'e becau'e the learner' re5uired more cla'' time to 1ini'h the ta'k material' *e'earcher'

and at lea't 19 /ear' o1 e8perience teaching Engli'h T2o teacher', al'o Thai', had ma'ter(' degree' but
had taught Engli'h 1or onl/ one or 2 /ear' The remaining t2o teacher' 2ere non+Thai' $both 1rom the
3nited ;tate'& 2ith bachelor(' degree' in 1ield' unrelated to education but 2ho had taught in Thailand

The teacher' participated in the e4aluation o1 the ta'k+ba'ed cour'e a' part o1 their a''igned 'er4ice

Although 'tudent' 2ere concerned about the amount u'e o1 grammar at the beginning o1
the cour'e, ho2e4er the/ came to appreciate the empha'i' on learning 'trategie' and ta'k
per1ormance
Man/ learner' belie4ed that the ta'k+ba'ed cour'e pro4ided them 2ith kno2ledge and 'kill'
that the/ could u'e in their real li1e or out'ide the cla''room
