What is a Sketch ?
To begin a new part, a 2D profile is needed.

The 2D profile can be parametrized by

constraints.
The Sketcher is a 2D dimension workspace:
the elements created within the Sketcher are
exclusively 2D WIREFRAME elements.
Back to the 3D space, the elements created
in the Sketcher are seen as a single entity:
the SKETCH.

This Sketch can be the base profile of most

of the Part features.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

The Sketch Support

The sketch support MUST be PLANAR.
You can create a Sketch either on a plane or on a planar face of an existing geometry:

Sketching on a Plane:
-Any plane can be the support of a Sketch
-If needed, you can create planes dedicated to
sketches
-The Sketch Origin is the Plane Origin

Sketching on the Face of an Existing Feature:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

-The face of the feature must be planar

-The Sketch is linked to the Feature on which it is created

Note: It is better to create the sketch on a

stable support.

Tips for working in the Sketcher (1/2)

While working in the Sketcher Workbench, here are a few things to consider:

The Screen Orientation:

- As a general rule, it is recommended that the screen be oriented parallel to the sketching plane you are
in. This will happen automatically provided the options panel is set as shown.

When you exit the Sketcher, the screen will immediately return to the previous orientation.

The Normal View ICON:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

- While in the Sketcher, you may sometimes inadvertently rotate the part, causing the screen to be no
longer parallel to the sketching plane. If this occurs, you select the Normal View ICON, and the screen
will again be positioned parallel to the sketching plane.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

53
53

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Tips for working in the Sketcher (2/2)

The Normal View ICON, continued:
- In addition, if you desire to invert the orientation (look at the sketching plane from the other side), you
can select the Normal View ICON an additional time.

Sketching in 3D:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

- Even though you will be creating 2D sketched

geometry, all geometry in 3D space is accessible.
This will mean it will be possible to constrain the
2D geometry to features not in the same sketching
plane. You can rotate the part, use any geometry,
then select the Normal View ICON to return the
display to being parallel to the sketching plane.

Creating a Profile: What are the best tools to use ?

When creating a sketched shape, there are many tools that can be used.

An often asked question is should you use the Profile tools or should you create individual
elements and trim them to form the shape desired.
You could create
individual lines, then
use the trim tool to
create the final shape
desired:

For example, if you

wanted to create
this shape:

However, it is often advantageous (and MUCH faster), to create the shape using
the Profile tool (or the Predefined Profile tools) simply by clicking:

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

How Complex should Sketches be ?

To create cornered or chamfered edges on features based on sketches, you
have two possibilities:
-Create a complex sketch including the corners and chamfers:

This kind of feature is updated faster, but complex

sketches are harder to edit and modify.

-Create simple sketches and add the corners and chamfers afterward:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

It takes more time to update this kind of feature, but

corners and chamfers can be easily reorder,
deactivated or suppressed if necessary.

Considering these arguments, it is you to decide if the corners and

chamfers have to be included in the sketch.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Which Should I Use - Sketcher Spline or 3D Spline ?

Since the 3D Spline Tool - available within the Wireframe&Surfaces (WFS) or Generative Shape Design
(GSD) workbenches - can also be used in a 2D manner (with Geometry on Support being a plane),
when should you use the Sketcher Spline and when is the 3D Spline more appropriate?
In general, use the Sketcher Spline to create
Sketches for generating solid Sketch-Based
Features. (Although Pads and Pockets can be
generated from 3D Splines)
Use the 3D Spline when you need more
control over the Spline - i.e. Tangent Tension,
Curvature Direction, Curvature Radius.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

Surfaces can be generated from Splines

created by either method.

Design Considerations (1/4)

Here are some modeling techniques to consider when creating a design:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

1. Do not locate sketches/features to the edges of fillets or chamfers. This establishes a

relationship between the fillet or chamfer and the feature being created. If the fillet or
chamfer changes size, the feature may move without warning. If the fillet or chamfer is
deleted, an error will result which requires additional rework.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Design Considerations (2/4)

Here are some modeling techniques to consider when creating a design:
2. When creating constraints in the sketcher to an
edge of the part while viewing the sketch in a normal
view, CATIA creates the constraint to the first edge.
This could use an edge of a fillet or chamfer as shown
here. A better alternative is to make sure the
constraint is made to a more stable feature (the face
of the part), not the edge.

Design Considerations (3/4)

Here are some modeling techniques to consider when creating a design:

3. When creating a hole, do not use a pocket created from a sketched circle. You should use
a Hole feature. Even though they appear the same, using a hole feature allows the it to
possess all the characteristics of a real hole, making the creation and modification easier. It
also allows the drawing view of the hole to automatically pick up the holes characteristics.

Notes:

Why Constraints?
Without Constraints, geometry can be moved freely just by using the mouse to drag them. If Sketcher
profiles are moved, so do the solids that are supported by them. In the context of an assembly, if one
part moves, another part that is related to it may also move.
Although in CATIA V5 geometry will remain in place when put there, without Constraints any
subsequent movement of elements by the user may go unnoticed and affect Form Fit and Function of
entire assemblies.
Hence, Constraints serve to mathematically fix geometry in space.
They also can specifically relate one element to another and serve as visual feedback to the user on
what these relationships are.
After Constraints are created, they are easily modified by merely changing their values or placement.
From the ease at which Constraints may be modified and from the inherent downstream associativity
of V5, the user can quickly explore alternative designs.

What are Geometric and Dimensional Constraints ?

Geometric constraints
A Geometric constraint specifies how a geometric elements
is positioned with respect to another one: coincidence
(located at the same place), concentricity, tangency,
perpendicularity or parallelism
Geometric constraint

Dimensional constraints

(here concentricity)

A Dimensional Constraint, one type of Geometric

Constraint, specifies the distance between two elements.
This distance can be specified as a linear
distance, an angular distance, or a radial distance depending
on the type of geometric elements involved

Dimensional constraint

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

(here distance)

A sketch with many constraints can quickly become unreadable. So, try to position the constraints correctly
to make the sketch readable.

What Does Sketching in Context Mean ?

Sketching in context is using existing geometry to create new geometry
When sketching with CATIA V5 space geometry is visualized. You can use it
to guide your sketch

From rough to precise sketch

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

At first, the sketch has to only be made

to conform to the spatial intent i.e. the left
or right of a hole, on the inside or outside
of a pocket, on the top or bottom of a pad,
etc.
Later, the exact dimensions or precise
geometric constraints (concentricity,
parallelism, coincidence...) can be applied
to the sketch (or profile) to define it
precisely

Tips on initial sketch of geometry (1/2)

When you are sketching the initial geometry, here are a few things to consider to make
the creation of constraints go more smoothly:

Initial Size of Sketch:

- As you begin to create geometry for a sketch, try to create it reasonably close in shape and size to the
eventual final constrained sketch. This is because a sketch that is greatly different in size from the final
shape, will become distorted when the actual dimensional constraints are applied, making it difficult to
understand what is occurring.

there may be different

These settings in the Sketcher Options page control whether geometric constraints are detected
during the development of the initial sketch. You can control the types of things detected in the Smart
Pick panel. It is helpful to have most of these items always turned on.

This ICON controls whether geometric constraints are automatically created during the development
of the initial sketch. When geometry is fairly simple, it may be advantageous to have this ICON selected,
as this will help speed the finalization of the shape. However, with more complex geometry, having this
ICON chosen can lead to confusion and the potential for the creation of unwanted constraints.

This check box performs

the same task as
selecting the ICON.

Tips on Constraint Creation

There are two tools to define the constraints on a sketch. Both can create both
geometric and dimensional types of constraints. It is suggested that while learning
constraint creation you use the following:
Geometric Constraints

Dimensional Constraints

However, as you become more skilled, it is more efficient to use the process below to
create all constraints:

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Controlling the Constraint Dimension Direction

When creating a dimension constraint on a profile, the dimension direction is
determined by the type of element selected. If the elements are points or circles, the
default dimensions direction is parallel to the line between the points or circle centers.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

When creating a dimension constraint between two circles or points, you can force a
horizontal or vertical dimension orientation by right-clicking and choosing the desired
orientation.

A Part is a combination of one or more features,

and bodies
The first feature is generated from a sketch
(profile), by extrusion or revolution
Features are components based on sketches
(sketch-based) or on existing features (dress-up and
transformation). They can also be generated from
surfaces (surface-based)
A body is a set of features that can be assembled to
a part through Boolean operations (Assemble,

Creating a Base Feature

To begin, it is important to have a good base feature. Typically this feature
represents the primary shape or foundation which all the part geometry can be
added or removed from.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

The base feature is usually started from a

2D profile, sketch, or surface element.
This lesson will focus on the parts where
the base feature begins from a 2D profile
or sketch. Which in CATIA is referenced
as Sketch Based Feature.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

142
142

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Selecting a Base Feature

When selecting a base feature, it is recommended to select the basic elements
which will convey the primary shape or function of the part. This does not mean
the level of detail for a base feature have to be completely defined. For example,
some corner fillets, holes, pockets, etc might not be originally created as part of
the base feature sketch but created later using another feature for its definition.
Steps for selecting a Base Feature:
Identify the part features
Select one to represent the Base element
Identify the CATIA tools (features) needed to create it
Create the feature

Notes:

What is a Draft ?
Drafts are angled faces defined on molded parts to
make them easier to remove from molds

Material removed or added?

Material gets added or removed based on the draft
angle applied to the part during the operation

Basic Draft definition

Pulling direction: this direction corresponds to the
reference from which the draft faces are defined
Draft angle: this is the angle that the draft faces
make with the pulling direction from the neutral
element. This angle may be defined for each face
Neutral element: this element defines a neutral
curve on which the drafted face will lie. This
element will remain the same during the draft. The
neutral element and parting element (this
plane, face or surface cuts the part in 2 and each
portion is drafted according to its previously
defined direction) may be the same element

Notes:

What is a Fillet ?
A fillet is a curved face of a constant or variable radius that is tangent to, and
that joins, two surfaces. Together, these three surfaces form either an inside
corner (fillet) or an outside corner (round)

Different types of fillets

Edge fillets: Smooth transitional surfaces between
two adjacent faces
Face-face fillet: Used when there is no intersection
between the faces or when there are more than two
sharp edges between the faces
Variable radius Fillets: curved surfaces defined
according to a variable radius
Tritangent fillets: Involves the removal of one of
the three faces selected

Selecting Faces to Draft

When adding a Draft feature, you can either select single faces, one at a time,
or can draft several faces at once in one operation.

As a general rule, it is recommended for each draft operation, that you select all faces that have the same
draft angle and share the same neutral element. This allows the Specification Tree to be less complex.

Selecting Edges to Fillet (2/2)

When a part requires multiple fillets, it is advisable to choose edges in logical
groups. This method should avoid selecting both lateral and transverse edges in a
single operation. An example of this is shown here:

In the above example, the 4 red fillets are created together first,
then the 2 green fillets, then the single blue fillet, which then
can run completely around the part.

A Transformation is the ability to move a body either by translating it along an axis,
rotating it around an axis or moving it symmetrically about a plane

- Rotation about an axis
- Symmetry about a plane

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

When to Move Features ?

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

Transformations are useful when you have created some geometry and you decide
that it needs to be moved, or rotated into a specific position

There are some cases where it is not easy to create geometry in the
expected plane because it requires the use of geometry not in the
plane. You can create the geometry in a wrong plane and then
rotate or translate it to its proper position
Transformations can only be used on either the whole Part Body or an
individual Body within the Part

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

237
237

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Notes:

Scaling the Part to define mold shrink

A part gets scaled differently depending on the type of element used as the
reference.
If a point is used, the scaling is done using the same scaling ratio in all three
directions.
When designing an injection molded plastic part, the part will often be scaled up in
order to accommodate (in the design of the mold) the fact that the material will shrink
upon cooling. However, the part may shrink unlike amounts in different directions.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

In these situations you cannot use a point as the reference. You must use a plane or
planar face features. This will scale the part only in a direction normal to that plane.
You can then do three separate scaling transformations in each of three directions
which will properly define the shrink in all three directions.

Limitations on using Reorder

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

When a feature is referenced by another during a design, a parent/child relationship is

established between the two. This means that the second feature (child) is dependant
on the first (parent) for a part of its definition. In the example below, the sketch for the
small pocket was constrained to the large pocket.

If you attempt to reorder the

small pocket before the large
pocket, CATIA will remind you
that this is not possible.

What are Components?

In its simplest form, a Component is a CATIA V5 Part or Assembly (i.e. a CATPart or a
CATProduct file) that has been inserted into an assembly. However, a Component can
also be data that is not native to V5, such as V4 models, IGES, STEP, and VRML files.

Notes:

Working with Visualization Mode

By default an assembly is loaded in design mode. Thus parts definition of all components are loaded
in memory (this involve exact geometry and parameters). This step can involve more or less time
according to the assembly to load. Then to improve performance you can set CATIAs option to load
an assembly in visualization mode. In this mode, a representation of the geometry only is available.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

Turning ON the cache system will cause CATIA to load automatically parts and
models in Visualization Mode:

Note: Geometry loaded in visualization mode can not be edited. You need to doubleclick on it to switch to the design mode and be able to modify it.

Introduction to positioning with Constraints

Once the components are inserted in the product, they must be positioned:

Before positioning the components with constraints, they

can be pre-positioned using the compass:
-In this case, no constraints forces the position of the
components: it is just a free movement.
-This free movement is used to approximately position the
components before fixing it with constraints.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

The components relative position can be set

using constraints:
-In this case, constraints are applied and have
to be respected.
Note: once constraints have been applied, you
can still move the components with the
compass if this movement respects the
constraints. If not, the components will be
repositioned regarding the constraints when
you will update them.

What Are Assembly Constraints ?

Assembly constraints is the method to place components in an assembly. The
general process is as follows:

Fix-in-space one component in the

assembly. It will be the starting point.

It will move the components into position.

Manual Update option to on
in the assembly settings and
it is therefore recommended.

Notes:

Constraint Rules
There are some simple rules that CATIA automatically enforces.

You can apply constraints only between the child components of the active component.
You cannot define constraints between two geometric elements belonging to the same component
You cannot apply a constraint between two components belonging to the same sub-assembly if this
sub-assembly is not the active component.
(3) This constraint can be applied since Product C
belongs to the active component Product B and
also Product E is contained within Product D which
is contained within the active component Product
B.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

(2) This constraint cannot be applied because

Product E and Product F both belong to a
component other than the active component
Product B. To define this constraint, Product D
must be made active.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

(1) This constraint cannot be applied because

Product K does not belong to the active
component Product B. To define this constraint,
Product A must be made active.

The User chooses between both options ,
The parts building the symmetrical sub-assembly are :

Either a symmetrical part from the source part. This involves creating a new part,
outside any assembly context, with a new PartNumber . A typical example is the left
door in a car, relatively to the right door.

Secondary Views are added to improve the clarity of the description of a

part through better visualization and/or to aid in dimensioning. There are
seven types of secondary views.
Secondary Views:

1) Detail Views: A detail view is defined by a

"callout" on an existing view around the area
to be enlarge for the new view. The callout
can be a circle or an free-hand sketched
profile.
2) Clipped Views: A clipping view is defined
by a callout on an existing view. The
callout can be a circle or an free-hand
sketched profile and the clipping will remove
all the existing views geometry that is not in
the callout.

3) Isometric Views: An isometric view is the

projection of the 3D part and its relation to
the current rotation of the XYZ plane.
4) Broken Views: A broken view is defined by
adding break lines to determine an area of
the view that will be removed. Views can be
broken horizontally or vertically.
