ZAKAH

- Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) said: No harity (!a"ah) is payable on less than #i$e was%s o# (dates or grains), on less than #i$e
camel-heads and on less than #i$e u%iyas (o# sil$er)&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: No harity is due #rom a Muslim on his sla$e or horse&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) sent ')mar #or (collecting) harity (!a"ah), and it was said that *bn +amil, Khalid bin Al-,alid and
Al-'Abbas the uncle o# the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him), re#used (to pay it)& )pon this the
Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him), said: *bn +amil is ta"ing re$enge but #or this that he was
destitute and Allah made him rich& As regards Khalid, you are un-ust to Khalid, #or he reser$ed his armors
and weapons #or the sa"e o# Allah, and as #or Al-'Abbas, * will be responsible #or it and an e%ual amount
along with it& And he again said: ')mar, bear this in mind, the uncle o# a person is li"e his #ather&
- *bn ')mar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
prescribed the payment o# !a"at Al-.itr (on brea"ing the .ast) o# /amadan #or people, #or e$ery #reeman,
or sla$e, male and #emale among the Muslims, one sa' o# dried dates, or one sa' o# barley&
- Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ,e used to ta"e out as the !a"at Al-.itr
(harity o# Al-.itr) one sa' o# dates, or one sa' o# raisins, or one sa' o# barley, or one sa' o# cheese or one sa'
o# raisins&
- *bn ')mar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)
ordered that the harity o# Al-.itr should be paid be#ore the people go out #or the 0rayer&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: *# any owner o# gold or sil$er does not pay what is due on him, when the 1ay o# /esurrection would
come, plates o# #ire would be beaten out #or him2 these would then be heated in the #ire o# 'ell and his
sides, his #orehead and his bac" would be cauteri3ed with them& ,hene$er these cool down, (the process is)
repeated during a day the e4tent o# which would be #i#ty thousand years, until -udgment is pronounced
among ser$ants, and he sees whether his path is to ta"e him to 0aradise or to 'ell& *t was as"ed: Messenger
o# Allah, what about the camel5 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) said: *# any owner o# the camel does not pay what is
due on him, and o# his due in that (camel) is (also) to mil" it on the day when it comes down to water, when
the 1ay o# /esurrection comes a so#t sandy plain would be set #or him, as e4tensi$e as possible, (he will
#ind) that not a single young one is missing, and they will trample him with their hoo#s and bite him with
their mouths& As o#ten as the #irst o# them passes him, the last o# them would be made to return during a
day the e4tent o# which would be #i#ty thousand years, until -udgment is pronounced among ser$ants and he
sees whether his path is to ta"e him to 0aradise or to 'ell& *t was (again) as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, what
about cows (cattle) and sheep5 'e said: *# any owner o# the cattle and sheep does not pay what is due on
them, when the 1ay o# /esurrection comes a so#t sandy plain would be spread #or them, he will #ind none
o# them missing, with twisted horns, without horns or with a bro"en horn, and they will gore him with their
horns and trample him with their hoo#s& As o#ten as the #irst o# them passes him the last o# them would be
made to return to him during a day the e4tent o# which would be #i#ty thousand years, until -udgment would
be pronounced among the ser$ants& And he would be shown his path, a path leading him to 0aradise or to
'ell& *t was as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, what about the horse5 )pon this he said: (he horses are o# three
types& (o one man (these are) a burden, and to another man (these are) a co$ering, and still to another man
(these are) a source o# reward& (he one #or whom these are a burden is the person who rears them in order
to show o##, #or $ainglory and #or opposing the Muslims2 so they are burden #or him& (he one #or whom
these are a co$ering is the person who rears them #or the sa"e o# Allah but does not #orget the right o# Allah
concerning their bac"s and their nec"s, and so they are a co$ering #or him& As #or those which bring reward
(these re#er to) the person who rears them #or the sa"e o# Allah to be used #or Muslims and he puts them in
meadow and #ield& And whate$er they eat #rom that meadow and #ield would be recorded on his behal# as
good deeds as would also the amount o# their dung and urine& And these would not brea" their halter and
prance a course or two without ha$ing got recorded the amount o# their hoo# mar"s and their dung as a
good deed on his behal# (on behal# o# their owner)& And their master does not bring them past a ri$er #rom
which they drin", though he did not intend to %uench their thirst, but Allah would record #or him the
amount o# what they drin" on his behal# as good deeds& *t was as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, what about the
asses5 )pon this he said: Nothing has been re$ealed to me in regard to the asses (in particular) e4cept this
one $erse o# a comprehensi$e nature: 'e who does an atom's weight o# good will see it, and he who does
an atom's weight o# e$il will see it
- Abu 1harr, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * went to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) and he was sitting under the shade o# the Ka'bah& As he saw me he said: 6y the 7ord o# the
Ka'bah, they are the losers& * came there till * sat and * could not stay (longer) and (then) stood up& * as"ed:
Messenger o# Allah, let my #ather be ransom #or you, who are they (the losers)5 'e said: (hey are those
ha$ing a huge amount o# wealth e4cept so and so and (those who spend their wealth generously on them
whom they #ind in #ront o# them, behind them and on their right side and on their le#t side) and they are a
#ew, And no owner o# camels, or cattle or goat and sheep, who does not pay !a"ah (would be spared
punishment) but these (camels, cattle, goats and sheep) would come on the 1ay o# /esurrection wearing
more #lesh and would gore him with their horns and trample them with their hoo$es& And when the last one
would pass away, the #irst one would return (to trample him) till -udgment would be pronounced among
people&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he 0rophet (may peace be upon him) said:
Nothing is more delighting to me than this that )hud should be o# gold #or me, and no dinar is le#t with me
out o# it be#ore three nights pass e4cept a dinar which * would set aside #or the repayment o# debt upon me&
- Abu 1harr's 'adith, may Allah be pleased with him& Ahna# bin 8ais reported: * came to Medina and
when * was in the company o# the grandees o# the 8uraish a man with a crude body and an uncouth #ace
wearing coarse clothes came there& 'e stood up be#ore them and said: 9i$e glad tidings to those who amass
riches o# the stones which would be heated in the .ire o# 'ell, and would be placed at the tic" o# the chest
till it would pro-ect #rom the shoulder bone, and would be put on the shoulder bone till it would pro-ect
#rom the tic" o# his chest, and it (this stone) would continue passing and repassing (#rom one side to the
other)& 'e (the narrator) said: (hen people hung their heads and * saw none among them gi$ing any answer&
'e then returned and * #ollowed him till he sat near a pillar& * said: * #ind that these (people) disli"ed what
you said to them and they do not understand anything& My #riend Abu Al-8asim (Muhammad) (may peace
he upon him) called me and * responded to him, and he as"ed: 1o you see )hud5 * saw the sun (shining) on
me and * thought that he would send me on an errand #or him& So * said: * see it& )pon this he said: Nothing
would delight me more than this that * should ha$e gold li"e it (e%ual to the bul" o# )hud), and * should
spend it all e4cept three dinars& ('ow sad it is) that they hoard worldly riches, and they "now nothing& *
as"ed: ,hat about you and your brothers the 8uraish5 :ou do not go to them #or any need and do not
accept anything #rom them& 'e said: 6y Allah, * neither beg anything #rom them (#rom worldly goods), nor
do * as" them anything about religion till * meet my Allah and 'is Messenger&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
related that Allah, the Most 6lessed and 'igh, said: ; son o# Adam, spend, * will spend on you& (he right
hand o# Allah is #ull and o$er#lowing& *bn Numair said: ;$er#lowing and nothing would diminish it, by
o$erspending day and night&
- +abir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: A person #rom the 6anu ')dhrah set a sla$e #ree a#ter his
death& (his news reached the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)& )pon this he as"ed: 'a$e you
any property besides it5 'e said: No& )pon this he as"ed: ,ho would buy (this sla$e) #orm me5 Nu'aim bin
'Abdullah Al-'Adawi bought it #or eight hundred dirhams and (this amount was) brought to the Messenger
o# Allah (may peace be upon him) who returned it to him (the owner), and then said: Start with your own
sel# and spend it on yoursel#, and i# anything is le#t, it should be spent on your #amily, and i# anything is le#t
(a#ter meeting the needs o# the #amily) it should be spent on relati$es, and i# anything is le#t #rom the
#amily, it should be spent li"e this, li"e this& And he was saying: *n #ront o# you, on your right and on your
le#t&
- Anas bin Mali", may Allah be pleased with him, is reported as saying: Abu (alhah was the one among the
Ansar o# Medina who possessed the largest property and among his property he $alued most was his garden
"nown as 6airaha which was opposite to the mos%ue& Anas said and the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) o#ten $isited it and he dran" o# its sweet water& ,hen this $erse was re$ealed: :ou will ne$er
attain righteousness till you gi$e #reely o# what you lo$e Abu (alhah got up and, going to Allah's
Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Allah says in 'is 6oo": :ou will ne$er attain righteousness till
you gi$e #reely o# what you lo$e and the dearest o# my property is 6airaha so * gi$e it as charity #or the
sa"e o# Allah #rom ,hom * hope #or reward #or it and the treasure with Allah2 so spend it, Messenger o#
Allah, on whate$er purpose you deem it proper& (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
6ra$o< that is pro#it-earning property& * ha$e heard what you ha$e said, but * thin" you should spend it on
your nearest relati$es& So Abu (alhah distributed it among the nearest relati$es and his cousins on his
#ather's side&
- Maimunah bint Al-'arith, may Allah be pleased with her, related: She set #ree a #emale-sla$e during the
li#etime o# the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and she made a mention o# that to the
Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and he said: 'ad you gi$en her to your maternal uncles, you
would ha$e a greater reward
- !ainab, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
; women, gi$e harity e$en though it be some o# your -ewelry& * returned to 'Abdullah and said: :ou are a
person with empty hands, whereas the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) has commanded us to
gi$e harity, so better go to him and as" and i# this will su##ice #or me2 otherwise * will gi$e it to someone
else& 'Abdullah said to me (his wi#e): :ou better go yoursel#& So * went and there was another woman o# the
Ansar at the door o# the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) ha$ing the same purpose as * had&
Now Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was in$ested with awe (so we did not li"e to "noc")&
(hen 6ilal came out and we said to him: 9o to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and
in#orm him that there are two women at the door as"ing him whether it will ser$e them to gi$e harity to
their spouses and to orphans who are under their charge, but do not in#orm him who we are& 6ilal went to
the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and as"ed him (what these women had instructed him to
as")& (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) as"ed him who these women were& 'e (6ilal) said:
(hey are a woman #rom Ansar and !ainab& )pon this the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)
as"ed: ,hich o# the !ainabs5 'e said: (he wi#e o# 'Abdullah& (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) said: (here are two rewards #or them, the reward o# "inship and the reward o# harity&
- )mm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: * as"ed the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) whether there is a reward #or me i# * spend on Abu Salamah's sons, and * am not going to abandon
them in this state (o# helplessness) #or they are my sons& 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) said: :es& .or you is the
reward #or what you spend on them&
- Abu Mas'ud Al-6adri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) said: ,hen a Muslim spends on his #amily see"ing reward #or it #rom Allah, it counts #or him as
harity&
- Asma', may Allah be pleased with her, reported: * as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, my mother, who is inclined
or scared has come to me, should * (e$en in her position o# being opposed to *slam) treat her well5 'e said:
:es&
- 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated: A person came to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace
be upon him) and said: My mother died suddenly without ha$ing made any will& * thin" she would ha$e
de#initely gi$en harity i# she had been able to spea"& ,ould she ha$e a reward i# * ga$e harity on her
behal#5 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) said: :es&
- Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: 9i$ing o# charity is essential #or e$ery Muslim& *t was as"ed: ,hat do you say o# him who does not
#ind (the means) to do so5 'e said: 7et him wor" with both his hands, thus doing bene#it to himsel# and
gi$e charity& *t was as"ed: ,hat about one who does not ha$e (the means) to do so5 'e said: (hen let him
assist the needy, the aggrie$ed& *t was as"ed: ,hat do you say o# one who cannot e$en do this5 'e said:
(hen he should en-oin what is reputable or what is good& 'e as"ed: ,hat i# he cannot do that5 'e (the 'oly
0rophet) said: 'e should then abstain #rom e$il, #or $erily that is charity on his behal#&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
harity is due on e$ery -oint o# a person, e$ery day the sun rises& Administering o# -ustice between two men
is also a charity& And assisting a man to ride upon his beast, or helping him load his luggage upon it, is a
charity2 and a good word is a charity2 and e$ery step that you ta"e towards the 0rayer is a charity, and
remo$ing o# harm#ul things #rom the pathway is a charity&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: (here is ne$er a day wherein ser$ants (o# Allah) get up at morn, and are not $isited by two angels&
;ne o# them says: ; Allah, gi$e him more who spends (#or the sa"e o# Allah), and the other says: ; Allah,
bring destruction to one who withholds&
- 'arithah bin ,ahb, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be
upon him) as saying: 9i$e charity #or a time is about to come when a person would wal" with alms and the
one whom it is to be gi$en would say: 'ad you brought it yesterday, * would ha$e accepted it& .or the
present * do not need it& (And the gi$er o# charity) would not #ind anyone to accept it&
- Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
(here would come a time #or the people when a person would roam about with harity o# gold, but he
would #ind no one to accept it #rom him& And a man would be seen #ollowed by #orty women see"ing
re#uge with him on account o# the scarcity o# males and abundance o# #emales&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: (he 7ast 'our will not come be#ore wealth becomes abundant and o$er#lowing, so much so that a
man ta"es !a"ah out o# his property and cannot #ind anyone to accept it #rom him, and till the land o#
Arabia becomes meadows and ri$ers&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: *# anyone gi$es as charity the e%ui$alent o# a date #rom that (earning) earned honestly, #or Allah
accepts that which is law#ul, the 7ord would accept it with 'is /ight 'and, and e$en i# it is a date, it would
#oster in the 'and o# the 7ord, as one o# you #osters his colt, till it becomes bigger than a mountain&
- 'Adi bin 'atim, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) saying: 'e who among you can protect himsel# against .ire, he should do so, e$en i# it should be with
hal# a date&
- Abu Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ,e were commanded to gi$e charity (despite the
#act) that we were coolies& Abu 'A%il donated hal# a sa'& And there came another man with more than this&
(he hypocrites said: =erily Allah does not stand in need o# the charity o# this, and the second one has done
nothing but only made a show (o# his charity)& (hen this $erse was re$ealed& (hose who sco## at the
$oluntary gi$ers o# charity among the belie$ers as well as those who cannot #ind anything (to gi$e) but with
their hard labor
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ((he Messenger o# Allah) said: ;# course the
person who gi$es to a #amily a she-camel as a gi#t, which gi$es mil" morning and e$ening e%ual to a large
bowl, its reward (the reward o# the gi#t) is great&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) #orbade (to do certain things) and then he made a mention o# certain habits and said: 'e who gi$es a
she-camel as a gi#t, #or him is the reward (o# the gi#t) both morning and e$ening a reward #or drin"ing mil"
in the morning and a reward #or drin"ing mil" in the e$ening&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he li"eness o# one who spends or one who
gi$es charity is that o# a person has two cloa"s or two coats-o#-mail o$er him right #rom the breast to the
collar bones& And when the spender (and the other narrator said, when the gi$er o# charity) ma"es up his
mind to gi$e charity, it (coat-o#-mail) becomes e4panded #or him& 6ut when a miserly person intends to
spend, it contracts and e$ery ring grips the place where it is& .or the gi$er o# charity, this coat-o#-mail
e4pands enough as to co$er his whole body and obliterates e$en his #ootprints& Abu 'urairah said: ((he
miserly man) tries to e4pand it (the coat-o#-mail) but it does not e4pand&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: A man e4pressed his intention to gi$e harity, so he came out with harity and placed it in the hand
o# an adulteress& *n the morning, the people were tal"ing and saying: harity was gi$en to an adulteress last
night& 'e (the gi$er o# harity) said: ; Allah, to :ou be the praise to an adulteress& 'e then again e4pressed
his intention to gi$e harity2 so he went out with the harity and placed it in the hand o# a rich person& *n
the morning the people were tal"ing and saying: harity was gi$en to a rich person& 'e (the gi$er o#
harity) said: ; Allah, to :ou be the praise to a well-to-do person& 'e then e4pressed his intention to gi$e
harity, so he went out with harity and placed it in the hand o# a thie#& *n the morning, the people were
tal"ing and saying: harity was gi$en to a thie#& So he (the harity gi$er) said: ; Allah, to :ou be the
praise (what a mis#ortune it is that harity has been gi$en to) the adulteress, to a rich person, and to a thie#<
(here came (the angel to him) and he was told: :our harity has been accepted& As #or the adulteress (the
harity might become the means) whereby she might restrain hersel# #rom #ornication& (he rich man might
perhaps learn a lesson and spend #rom what Allah has gi$en him, and the thie# might thereby re#rain #rom
committing the#t&
- Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
(he honest Muslim trustee who spends (sometimes he said >who gi$es>) what he is commanded to do and
he gi$es that in #ull with his heart o$er#lowing with cheer#ulness and he gi$es it to one to whom he is
ordered, he is one o# the gi$ers o# harity&
- 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
,hen a woman gi$es in charity some o# the #ood in her house, without causing any damage, there is reward
#or her #or whate$er she has gi$en, and a reward #or her husband #or what he earned& (he same applies to
the trustee& *n no respect does the one diminish the reward o# the other&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) said: No woman should obser$e .ast when her spouse is present (in the house) but with his
permission& And she should not admit any (mahram) in his house, while he (her husband) is present, but
with his permission& And whate$er she spends #rom his earnings without his sanction, #or him is hal# the
reward&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: *# anyone contributes a pair o# anything #or the sa"e o# Allah, he would be in$ited to enter 0aradise
(with these words): ; ser$ant o# Allah, it is good (#or you)& (hose who engage in the 0rayer will be in$ited
to enter through the 9ate o# the 0rayer2 those who ta"e part in +ihad will be in$ited to enter through the
9ate o# +ihad2 those who gi$e charity will be in$ited to enter through the 9ate o# harity2 and those who
obser$e .ast will be in$ited to enter through the 9ate o# Al-/aiyan& Abu 6a"r Al-Siddi% as"ed: Messenger
o# Allah, is it necessary that a person be in$ited through one o# these gates5 ,ill anyone be in$ited to enter
by all those gates5 (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) said: :es, and * hope you will be one
o# them&
- Asma' bint Abi 6a"r, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) said to me: Spend, and do not calculate, or otherwise Allah would also calculate in your case&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
used to say: ; Muslim women, none o# you should consider e$en a sheep's trotter too insigni#icant to gi$e
to her neighbor&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) had said: Se$en are (the persons) whom Allah would gi$e protection with 'is Shade on the 1ay when
there would be no shade but that o# 'im (i&e& on the 1ay o# +udgment, and they are): a -ust ruler, a youth
who grew up with the worship o# Allah2 a person whose heart is attached to the mos%ues2 two persons who
lo$e and meet each other and depart #rom each other #or the sa"e o# Allah2 a man whom a beauti#ul woman
o# high ran" seduces (#or illicit relation), but he (re-ects this o##er by saying): >* #ear Allah>2 a person who
gi$es charity and conceals it (to such an e4tent) that the right hand does not "now what the le#t has gi$en
and a person who remembered Allah in pri$acy and his eyes shed tears&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: (here came a person to the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) and as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, which charity is the best5 )pon this he said: (hat
you should gi$e charity (in a state when you are) healthy and close#isted, one haunted by the #ear o#
po$erty, hoping to become rich (charity in such a state o# health and mind is the best)& And you must not
de#er (charity to such a length) that you are about to die and would be saying: (his is #or so and so, and this
is #or so and so& 7o, it has already come into (the possession o# so and so)&
- 'Abdullah bin ')mar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: As Allah's Messenger (may peace be
upon him) was sitting on the pulpit and tal"ing about charity and abstention #rom begging, he said: (he
upper hand is better than the lower one, the upper being the one which bestows and the lower one which
begs&
- 'a"im bin 'i3am, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said this: (he most e4cellent charity or the best o# charity is that a#ter gi$ing which the (gi$er) remains rich
and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin with the members o# your household&
- Mu'awiah bin Abi Su#yan, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * had heard the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) as saying: * am but a treasurer& (o one whom * gi$e out o# (my own) #ree will, he
would be blessed in that, but he whom * gi$e yielding to (his constant) begging and #or his co$etousness is
li"e one who would eat, but would not be satis#ied&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: (he poor man (mis"in) is not the one who goes round to the people and is dismissed with one or two
morsels, and one or two dates& (hey (the 0rophet's ompanions) as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, then who is
mis"in5 'e said: 'e who does not get enough to satis#y him, and he is not considered so (as to elicit the
attention o# the bene$olent people), so that harity may be gi$en to him, and he does not beg anything #rom
people&
- 'Abdullah *bn ')mar, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) said: ,hen a man is always begging #rom people, he would meet Allah (in a state) that there
would be no #lesh on his #ace&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * heard the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) as saying: *t is better #or one among you to bring a load o# #irewood on his bac" and gi$e charity
out o# it (and satis#y his own need) and be independent o# people, than that he should beg #rom people,
whether they gi$e him anything or re#use him& =erily the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and
begin (charity) with your dependents&
- ')mar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) ga$e me a gi#t, but * said: 9i$e it to one who needs it more than *& 'e ga$e me wealth #or the
second time but * said: 9i$e it to one who needs it more than *& )pon this the Messenger o# Allah (may
peace be upon him) said: (a"e out o# this wealth which comes to you without your being a$aricious and
without begging, but in other circumstances do not let your heart han"er a#ter it&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) said: (he heart o# an old person #eels young #or the lo$e o# two things: lo$e #or long li#e and wealth&
- Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: (he
son o# Adam grows old, but two (desires) in him remain young: desire #or wealth and desire #or li#e&
- Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: *# the
son o# Adam were to possess two $alleys o# riches, he would long #or the third one& And the stomach o# the
son o# Adam is not #illed but with dust& And Allah returns to him who repents&
- *bn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: * heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) saying: *# there were #or the son o# Adam a $alley #ull o# riches, he would long to possess another one
li"e it, and *bn Adam does not #eel satiated but with dust& And Allah returns to him who returns (to 'im)&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) had said: /ichness does not lie in the abundance o# (worldly) goods but richness is the richness o# the
soul (heart, sel#)&
- Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be
upon him) stood up and addressed the people thus: ; people, by Allah, * do not entertain #ear about you in
regard to anything else than that which Allah would bring #orth #or you in the #orm o# adornment o# the
world& A person as"ed: Messenger o# Allah, does good produce e$il5 (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace
be upon him) remained silent #or a while and he then as"ed: ,hat did you say5 'e replied: Messenger o#
Allah, * as"ed: 1oes good produce e$il5 (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) said to him: (he
good does not produce but good, but among the plants the spring rain produces there some which "ill with
indigestion or nearly "ill all but the animal which #eeds on $egetation& *t eats and when its #lan"s are
distended&
- Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Some people #rom among the Ansar
begged #rom the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and he ga$e them& (hey again begged him
and he again ga$e them, till when what was in his possession was e4hausted he said: ,hate$er good
(riches, goods) * ha$e, * will not withhold it #rom you& 'e who re#rains #rom begging, Allah sa#eguards him
against want, and he who see"s su##iciency, Allah would "eep him in a state o# su##iciency, and he who
shows endurance, Allah would grant him power to endure, and none is blessed with an endowment better
and greater than endurance&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: ; Allah, ma"e the pro$ision o# Muhammad's #amily su##icient -ust to sustain li#e&
- Anas bin Mali", may Allah be pleased with him, reported: * was wal"ing with the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) and he had put on a mantle o# Na-ran with a thic" border& A 6edouin met him and
pulled the mantle so $iolently that * saw this $iolent pulling lea$ing mar"s o# the border o# the mantle on
the s"in o# the nec" o# the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)& And he (the 6edouin) said:
Muhammad, issue a command that * should be gi$en out o# the wealth o# Allah which is at your disposal&
(he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) turned his attention to him and smiled, and then ordered
#or him a gi#t (pro$ision)&
- Miswar bin Ma"hramah, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace
be upon him) distributed some cloa"s but did not bestow one upon Ma"hramah& )pon this Ma"hramah
said: ; my son, come along with me to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)& So * went with
him& 'e said: ?nter the house and call him (to come out) #or me& So * called him and he (the 'oly 0rophet)
came out, and there was a cloa" (#rom those already distributed) on him& 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) said: * had
"ept it #or you& 'e (Ma"hramah) loo"ed at it and was pleased&
- Anas bin Mali", may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Some people o# the Ansar, on the 1ay o#
'unain, when Allah con#erred upon 'is Messenger the riches o# the 'awa3in (without armed encounter),
and the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) set about distributing to some persons o# the 8uraish
one hundred camels, said: May Allah grant pardon to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) that
he bestowed (these camels) upon the people o# the 8uraish, and he ignored us, whereas our swords are still
dripping blood& (heir statement was con$eyed to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) and he
sent (someone) to the Ansar and gathered them under a tent o# leather& ,hen they had assembled, the
Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) came to them and as"ed: ,hat is this news that has reached
me #rom you5 (he wise people o# the Ansar said: Messenger o# Allah, so #ar as the sagacious among us are
concerned they ha$e said nothing, but we ha$e among us persons o# immature age2 they said: May Allah
grant pardon to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) that he ga$e to the 8uraish and ignored
us (despite the #act) that our swords are besmeared with their blood& )pon this the Messenger o# Allah (may
peace be upon him) said: * gi$e (at times material gi#ts) to persons who were %uite recently in the state o#
unbelie#, so that * may incline them to truth& 1o you not #eel delighted that people should go with riches,
and you should go bac" to your places with the Messenger o# Allah5 6y Allah, that with which you would
return is better than that with which they would return& ,hereupon they said: :es, Messenger o# Allah, we
are pleased& (he 'oly 0rophet said too: :ou would #ind mar"ed pre#erence (in con#erring o# the material
gi#ts) in #uture, so you should show patience till you meet Allah and 'is Messenger and * would be at Al-
Kauthar istern (in 0aradise)& (hey said: ,e will show patience&
- 'Abdullah bin !aid, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ,hen the Messenger o# Allah (may peace
be upon him) con%uered 'unain he distributed the booty, and he bestowed upon those whose hearts are
intended to be reconciled to (ruth& *t was con$eyed to him (the 'oly 0rophet) that the Ansar cherished a
desire that they should be gi$en (that $ery portion) which the people (o# the 8uraish) had got& )pon this the
Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) stood up and, a#ter ha$ing praised Allah and lauded 'im,
addressed them thus: ; people o# the Ansar, did * not #ind you erring and Allah guided you aright through
me, and (in the state o#) being destitute and Allah made you #ree #rom want through me, and in a state o#
disunity and Allah united you through me, and they (the Ansar) said: Allah and 'is Messenger are most
bene$olent& 'e (again) as"ed: ,hy do you not answer me5 (hey said: Allah and 'is Messenger are the
most bene$olent& 'e said: *# you wish you should say so and so, and the e$ent (should ta"e) such and such
course (and in this connection he made a mention) o# so many things& 'Amr is under the impression that he
has not been able to remember them& 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) #urther as"ed: 1o you not #eel happy (o$er this
state o# a##airs) that the people should go away with goats, and camels, and you go to your places along
with the Messenger o# Allah5 (he Ansar are inner garments (more close to me) and (other) people are outer
garments& 'ad there not been migration, * would ha$e been a man #rom among the Ansar& *# the people
were to tread a $alley or a narrow path, * would tread the $alley (chosen) by the Ansar or narrow path
(trodden) by them& And you would soon #ind a#ter me pre#erences (o$er you in getting material bene#its)&
So you should show patience till you meet me at the istern (Al-Kauthar)&
- 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ;n the day o# 'unain, the Messenger o#
Allah (may peace be upon him) showed pre#erence to (some) people in the distribution o# the spoils& 'e
bestowed on Al-A%ra' bin 'abis one hundred camels, and bestowed an e%ual (number) upon ')yainah, and
bestowed on people among the elite o# Arabs, and pre#erred them (to others) on that day, in the distribution
(o# spoils)& )pon this a person said: 6y Allah, neither -ustice has been obser$ed in this distribution (o#
spoils), nor has the pleasure o# Allah been sought in it& * (the narrator) said: 6y Allah, * will certainly
in#orm the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) about it& So * came to him and in#ormed him about
what he had said& (he color o# his (the 0rophet's) #ace changed red li"e blood, and he then as"ed: ,ho
would do -ustice, i# Allah and 'is Messenger do not do -ustice5 'e #urther said: May Allah ha$e mercy
upon Moses2 he was tormented more than this, but he showed patience& * said: Ne$er would * con$ey
anything to him (the 'oly 0rophet) a#ter this (unpleasant) narration&
- +abir bin 'Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: A person came to the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) at Al-+u'ranah on his way bac" #rom 'unain, and there was in the clothes o# 6ilal
some sil$er& (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) too" a hand#ul out o# that and bestowed it
upon the people& 'e (the person who had met the 0rophet at Al-+u'ranah) said to him: Muhammad, do
-ustice& 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) said: ,oe be upon you, who would do -ustice i# * do not do -ustice, and you
would be $ery un#ortunate and a loser i# * do not do -ustice& )pon this ')mar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be
pleased with him) said: 0ermit me to "ill this hypocrite& )pon this he (the 'oly 0rophet) said: May there be
protection o# Allah< 0eople would say that * "ill my companions& (his man and his companions would
recite the 8ur'an but it would not go beyond their throat, and they swer$e #rom it -ust as the arrow goes
through the prey&
- Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ,hen 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with
him) was in :emen he sent some gold alloyed with dust to the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him), and the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) distributed that gold among #our men: Al-A%ra'
bin 'abis Al-'an3hali and ')yainah bin 6adr Al-.a3ari and 'Al%amah bin ')lathah Al-'Amiri, then to one
person o# the tribe o# the Kilab and to !aid Al-Khair Al-(a'i, and then to one person o# the tribe o# Nabhan&
)pon this the people o# the 8uraish #elt angry and said: 'e (the 'oly 0rophet) ga$e to the chie#s o# Na-d
and ignored us& )pon this the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) said: * ha$e done it with a $iew
to conciliating them& (hen there came a person with thic" beard, prominent chee"s, deep sun"en eyes and
protruding #orehead and sha$en head& 'e said: Muhammad, #ear Allah& )pon this the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) as"ed: *# * disobey Allah, who would then obey 'im5 'a$e * not been (sent as
the) most trustworthy among the people o# the world5 6ut you do not repose trust in me& (hat person then
went bac"& A person among the people then sought permission (#rom the 'oly 0rophet) to "ill him&
According to some, it was Khalid bin Al-,alid who sought the permission& )pon this the Messenger o#
Allah (may peace be upon him) said: .rom this $ery person's posterity there would arise people who would
recite the 8ur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat2 they would "ill the #ollowers o# *slam and would
spare the idol-worshippers& (hey would glance through the teachings o# *slam so hurriedly -ust as the arrow
passes through the prey& *# * were to e$er #ind them * would "ill them li"e 'Ad&
- 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: * heard the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) as
saying: (here would arise at the end o# the age a people who would be young in age and immature in
thought, but they would tal" (in such a manner) as i# their words are the best among the creatures& (hey
would recite the 8ur'an, but it would not go beyond their throats, and they would pass through the religion
as an arrow goes through the prey& So when you meet them, "ill them, #or in their "illing you would get a
reward with Allah on the 1ay o# +udgment&
- Sahl bin 'unai#'s 'adith, may Allah be pleased with him& :usair bin 'Amr reported: * as"ed Sahl bin
'unai#: 1id you hear the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) ma"ing a mention o# the Khawari-5
'e said: * heard him say (and he pointed with his hand towards the east): (hese would be a people who
would recite the 8ur'an with their tongues and it would not go beyond their collar bones& (hey would pass
clean through their religion -ust as the arrow passes through the prey&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Al-'asan bin 'Ali too" one o# (the dates o# the
charity) and put it in his mouth, whereupon the 0rophet (may peace be upon him) said: 7ea$e it, lea$e it,
throw it2 do you not "now that we do not eat the charity5
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be e upon him)
said: * go bac" to my #amily and * #ind a date lying on my bed& * then ta"e it up to eat it, but then * throw it
away #earing that it may be a charity&
- Anas bin Mali", may Allah be pleased with him, reported: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) #ound a date in the street and said: *# it were not o# charity * would ha$e eaten it&
- Anas bin Mali", may Allah be pleased with him, reported: 6arirah presented to the Messenger o# Allah
(may peace be upon him) a piece o# meat which had been gi$en to her as charity& )pon this he (the 'oly
0rophet) said: (hat is a charity #or her and a gi#t #or us&
- 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: ;nce, the Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon
him) was presented with bee#& *t was said (by someone) that it had been gi$en to 6arirah as charity& )pon
this he (the 0rophet) said: *t is a charity #or her and a gi#t #or us&
- )mm 'Atiyah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: (he Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him)
sent me some mutton o# charity& * sent a piece out o# that to 'A'ishah& ,hen the Messenger o# Allah (may
peace be upon him) came to 'A'ishah, he as"ed: 'a$e you anything with you (to eat)5 She said: Nothing,
e4cept only that mutton sent to us by Nusaibah (the nic"name o# )mm 'Atiyah) which you had sent to her&
,hereupon he said: *t has reached its proper place&
- Abu 'urairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: ,hene$er the Messenger o# Allah (may peace
be upon him) was presented with #ood, he as"ed about it& *# he was told that it was a gi#t, he ate out o# that,
and i# he was told that it was a charity he did not eat out o# that&
- 'Abdullah bin Abi Au#a, may Allah be pleased with them, said: *t was the common practice o# the
Messenger o# Allah (may peace be upon him) that when the people brought to him harity he blessed them
saying: ; Allah, bless them& So when Abu Au#a brought to him harity he (the 'oly 0rophet) said: ;
Allah, bless the posterity o# Abu Au#a&
