KEN MAY, DIRECTOR OF MISSIONS THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2014 The Montgomery Baptist Association 20 Interstate Park Montgomery, Alabama 36109 334-271-6227 www.mgmbaptist.org This publication is made possible by your churches contributions to Associational Missions. W estside Baptist Church held its annual Vacation Bible School during the week of June 9-13. The theme was Agency D3. Both kids and adults went on mission under the code name Discover, Decide, Defend. Discover the proof of Christ being Gods Son; Decide that we will follow Him; Defend Christ by any means. This has been one of the most exciting ministries for Westside this year. We joined together as a group in one accord to reach the surrounding communities. Our outreach goal for this years VBS was to contact as many people as possible. We connected with areas such as Highland Village, Gibbs Village, Washington Park, Mobile Heights, Westgate and Fairview.
Our VBS leaders began preparation at the beginning of the year and were relentless in promotion. We had a blast decorating and preparing our lessons to make them unique and interesting for our students.
We also added a few surprises for this years VBS. The Montgomery Sheriff Department was invited and Deputy Chief Derrick Cunningham and the DARE Dog came and had a challenging talk with our preschoolers, first, second, third, and fourth graders about stranger danger and the importance of wearing seat belts.
Two forensic science interns from Alabama State University engaged third and fourth graders in a great forensics experiment and spoke about forensic science as a future career choice.
Dr. John Jernigan shared with our youth about the responsibilities of being a doctor. He added another D for Dreams and urged students to believe that regardless of how humble your beginnings, if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. He spoke about career paths, the importance of a positive attitude, and applying yourself in everything you do. Nothing is too hard as long as you keep God first.
We appreciate all our participants. However, of all the above activities, the most exciting part of VBS were the souls given to Christ! We had 187 people registered for VBS, an average attendance of 120 per night, and ten people who gave their lives to Christ. Praise GOD!!!! We were even more pleased when we received calls the following Sunday morning from several VBS participants, stating they needed a ride to church. Eight of them united with Westside Baptist Church on Sunday morning and are scheduled to be baptized the second Sunday in July.
One important truth we are aware of is the fact that VBS has a real purpose. It is more than another activity, more than people having fun, and more than fellowship. It is an amazing opportunity to win souls for Christ. We are absolutely looking forward to next years VBS!
