ASSESSING THE LEVEL OF RADIATION EXPOSURE OF WORKERS AT THE

RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF WAHIDIN SUDIROHUSODO HOSPITAL -


MAKASSAR

Background. In the health sector, the radiation used for radiodiagnostic, radiotherapy, and
nuclear medicine. Although providing many benefits, but on the other hand, exposure to
radiation can also give a negative effect for patients and radiation workers themselves.
Therefore, Badan Pengawas Tenaga Nuklir (BAPETEN) as the agency in charge to supervise all
the activities of the use of nuclear power has made arrangements regarding the limitations of the
dose received by radiation workers may be in a year and require every worker radiation
dosimetry for personal use during work activities so that the dose received during radiation
exposure can be monitored.
Method. The research method used is analytic research methods to assess the level of radiation
exposure of workers at the Radiology Department of Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital - Makassar
and its relationship to working time, period of employment, type of operated radiology
instrument, the use of personal protective equipment, and worker education levels. The study
was conducted at the Radiology Department of Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital - Makassar on
25 March - 6 April 2013. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 17 and summarized in
table form with explanations.
Result. The results showed that the number of employees is 27 people. Among them only as
many as 15 people meet the inclusion criteria. The average radiation dose received by workers
was 5.206 mSv a year and the value did not exceed the value of the dose limits specified
BAPETEN. As for the relationship of the level of radiation exposure to the length of
employment, length of service, type of radiology instrument, the use of personal protective
equipment, and workers education level did not show any significant correlation..
Conclusion. The average radiation dose received by the workers is 5.206 mSv, 10 workers
(66.7%) received doses of > 5 mSv / year and 5 workers (33.3%) received doses of <5
mSv/year. There is no correlation between the radiation exposure levels with employment
period, length of service, type of radiology instrument, the use of personal protective equipment,
and workers education level.
