INNED TO A CAUSE
WORTH ROARING ABOUT

The Lion of Judah was established in Miami in 1972

to recognize a new level of commitment by dedicated
women donors. Founders Norma Kipnis-Wilson and
Toby Freidland (of blessed memory) understood that to
shape the future they envisioned, they would have to help
women understand the importance of their gifts — and of
their connection to each other and the future of Judaism.
They would have to inspire their passion.

In its first year, 16 women felt the Levine and Betty Stone were among
calling and pledged $5,000 or more 21 Lions who were the first to roar

THE

In 1994, the Lion of Judah Endowment

(LOJE) Program was created to recognize
those women who established a minimum
endowment of $100,000 to perpetuate their Lion gift
to the women’s campaign of the Jewish Federation
of South Palm Beach County. Those who made the
commitment to be a “Lion forever” received a “flame”
that went above the Lion’s paw on their pins. Margie
Plough became the Jewish Federation of South Palm
Beach County’s first LOJE. Madeline Pargh and
Phyllis Golden became our community’s first
LOJE chairs, followed by Beverly Shapiro, who
built on Madeline and Phyllis’s success and took the
program to where it is today. We are proud to
report that after that short span of time, our community
now leads the nation with the largest number of
women (208 at this printing) who have established
Lion of Judah Endowment funds. An astounding 2,900
Jewish women across the nation have now committed
to be “a Lion forever,” leaving more than $440 million
to Jewish federations across the country.

THE ULTIMATE

Passion ACCESSORY.

Glorious and stunning, the Lion of Judah pin

represents sisterhood and connectedness,
leadership and power. It provides a
benchmark for women to continue to
advance into new spheres of giving as
they achieve greater economic success.
And, it allows women to take active roles
in securing their Jewish future, forging
new opportunities for creative philanthropy.
When you become a Lion, you have a
unique opportunity to influence the
global agenda with the Jewish values of
compassion and lovingkindness.

On the following pages, five

women share what it means
to be a Lion.

KINDNESS & CARING,
ALWAYS IN SEASON

R. SARNOFF
“Lions! What a very special family. We have common values,
passions and concerns for Jews everywhere, and a commitment to
help all others. My life has been greatly enhanced and enriched
through our many fulfilling experiences together. For me, this
has been and continues to be a beautiful journey. I feel extremely
proud when I put on my Lion pin ... proud to be part of such
an extraordinary group of women ... proud to be part of the
Jewish community ... and proud to be a Lion forever.”

MISHKIN
“I have been a Lion since September of 1988, when I went on
my first mission to Israel. That same year, my eldest son had
his Bar Mitzvah at the Wall. Wearing my pin reminds me of
all of these beautiful experiences, my love for Israel, and that,
as Jews, we are all responsible for one another. As a Lion of
Judah, I am doing my part to repair the world. As a proud
LOJE, I will continue repairing the world beyond my lifetime.”

FAITH & HOPE,

DEUTCH
“I first became a Lion of Judah on a mission to Israel
last year. When I announced my gift, one of the women that
I was with immediately took off her pin and gave it to me to
wear. I couldn’t stop looking at it, touching it and brimming
with pride to be wearing it. Whenever I see a woman wearing
a Lion of Judah pin, I know that she shares my passion and
sense of purpose. I know, even if I haven’t met her before, and
even if we do not speak, that we share a bond and a mission
and are part of a sisterhood stretching around the world.
A Lion of Judah pin is not merely a bauble or a piece of
jewelry, it is a badge upon my heart reminding me each time
I wear it of my love for my community and my people.”

“The pin I wear combines the menorah representing the Lion
program here in south Palm Beach County, and also the Star of
David from my other hometown, Akron, Ohio. I’ve also
added two diamonds to the pin every year since I became a
Lion, representing both Florida and Ohio, so the pin is quite
full and rather unique. The flame was added when I endowed
my gift and became a LOJE. When others see it, they often ask
me about it and, when another Lion spots it and approaches
me, we already know we have a great deal in common. I wear
it with the greatest pride and joy. And I feel fortunate enough
that we have the financial ability to contribute to Jewish needs
at this level.”

“When I wear my Lion pin, it reminds me that I am a
part of an exclusive group of like-minded women. It’s
a symbol of my connection to others who understand
and appreciate the importance of keeping the Jewish
faith – and Israel – alive and strong well into the
future. When I come across another woman wearing
the pin, someone who I’ve never met, I immediately feel
like she’s my sister. We don’t have to say a word, but I
feel our bond.”

LION OF JUDAH PIN GUIDELINES

The Lion of Judah pin is awarded to a woman who,

in any single campaign year (Sept.1—Aug. 31),
contributes at least $5,000 through a personal pledge.

Any recipient of the Lion of Judah pin who renews

her commitment of at least $5,000 in a subsequent
year is entitled to an additional diamond to be placed
on the pin.

For women who commit to become a Lion forever and

endow their annual campaign gift, a flame (Or L’Atid)

Another campaign commitment from a woman’s family,

husband or business, if applicable, may not be decreased
in order for the woman to commit $5,000 or more in
